The wonderful world of entertainment has been a part of my life since birth. My first experience with the bright lights and television cameras came when Cordelia Kelly announced my arrival into this, our world, on WFMY-TV Channel 2 in Greensboro, North Carolina. My mother worked at television stations from WTVT in Tampa, Florida to WFMY in Greensboro, North Carolina before settling in at WTVD in Durham, North Carolina. I would appear on the morning childrens programs riding the old red tricycle or just running around having fun. My grandfather was Chief Engineer at various radio stations from WXRO in Roxboro, North Carolina to popular FM stations in the Durham Raleigh area. This gave me the unique opportunity to learn the workings of the airways from the transmitters behind the scenes to the on-air personalities. There is nothing quite as fun for a 9 year old as announcing the morning weather on air, interviewing a sports legend like Enos Slaughter, or getting to talk with local country musicians headed for Nashville, Tennessee. This is just a small sampling of my experiences but a key part of my life that lead me to found Across the Canvas Productions in 1978. Across the Canvas Productions offers an outlet for aspiring talents of all ages, actors, artist, writers, producers, directors, dancers, models, photographers, musicians, comedians, and all those who have chosen to reach for their endless dreams with a stroke of a pen or a melody of colors cast across a blank surface. Maika (2022)
Amazing
To my knowledge this is the first Vietnamese movie I have ever seen. If not it is certainly the first one I have seen targeted at children. I was amazed at the storyline, the cast, the special effects, and the flow of the movie. The wild range of character actors were spot on with their on-screen deliveries. The lead actors show a believable depth and sincerity. I was very surprised by the excellent music in the soundtrack. I am certainly looking into the other works by the company, crew, and actors. I saw nothing inappropriate for the G rated audience. The humor was funny, the violence mild, and the drama was not overly dramatic. I give this film 10 stars and I can't rate many this way.
My First Mister (2001)
Amazing Film
I personally love everything I have seen with Albert Brooks. My First Mister is no exception. Leelee Sobieski displays her range of emotions with perfection throughout the film. Carol Kane sings and portrays a mother who seems indifferent on the surfaces as she tries to understand her teenage daughter. The entire cast is A class and worked wonderfully together. The soundtrack fits the generational gaps between the characters. The story line weaves through subtle changes as the dysfunctional family dynamics are introduced almost as segues between scenes. I found this a most enjoyable experience as it touched a wide multitude of internal feelings within me.
Christmas Au Pair (2021)
Worth a Look for Christmas
Many Christmas movies when it comes to romance have reoccurring themes. This film is no different in these respects. Stranded for Christmas, as it is in the title. Au Pair/Nanny finds love is included. Kids, family. And snow round off the list. What makes this so amazingly different is the cast, the storyline, and the pacing of the film. Much of dialog is about happy things and though sadness comes in and out from time to time it is smoothly woven within the on-going plot. The music was unique and even the classic Christmas songs were given a delightful twist. In all honesty I was touched so many time throughout the 90 minute journey I lost count. This is a definitely adding to my list for future holiday viewings.
Wonderwell (2023)
Coming of Age in Wonderland
The casting worked well with a variety of different characters. The sets, the special effects, and color schemes accented the storyline perfectly. Though the story is a coming of age adventure for a young girl it could have easily fit for a young boy. A nice blend of young love, broken romances, and classic fairy tale themes. The quest for knowledge is well addressed as is the question do you really want to know. A castle, the woods, and a not so pleasant pathway filled with surprises. All surrounded by opposing views of the fashion world filled with glamour and excess with an underlying darkness awaiting in the shadows.
Mr. Mercedes (2017)
Not for my taste
No offense to Stephen King fans as I personally like a lot of his books, series, and movies as well. However, starting with the Gunslinger books as I got into the second one, he lost me with extreme controversial story lines. Social and moral conscience shock are not the same as fright to me. Thus, this leads me to the recent series Mr. Mercedes that I attempted to watch. I made it for a few minutes and then the ridiculous got to be more than I could withstand. Great performances, camera work, and the overall look of the series is fine. It is the let me see if this shocks you story lines that are too much for my taste.
Echoes of War (2015)
War
I happened across this film early AM on a cable channel on December 10, 2015. I believe it tells a great story about war and the affects on people before, during, and after. For some one brief moment in time forever changes them and their destiny. War unlike so many other life events changes all involved prior, during, and after. I believe this is true whether the solider returns of their own accord, in a wheelchair, or in a box. Tragic events affect the warrior and all those who knew, know, and will come to know. Echos of War tells such a story in such a way that I was touched. I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants to learn more about war and how it changes people on both sides of the line as far as the eye can see and beyond.
