Hot Fuzz (2007)
What a fun time!!!!
Hot fuzz is so over-the-top and is pretty self aware about it. The characters are written so well, except a few female characters, I knew every character's defining traits. It's editing compliments the tone of the movie so well and those arrest and paperwork montages were my favourite moments of the film. I expected this to be a straightforward cop movie with hyperactive editing but in the second half I was surprised to see the bloody fun violence. The soundtrack alleviates the tension of the scenes so much and the direction is quite impressive. I really like how Edgar Wright gets some shots which he can tweak in the editing room to add the surprise factor. I absolutely loved it and had a great time. In the end, they built up Danny's death so well with the music and the editing but they didn't kill him, so it felt like a useless exercise. Some female characters could have been written better but overall this movie was a blast and I will definitely re-watch it.
There Will Be Blood (2007)
A modern masterpiece.
After this movie finished , I was speechless. Paul Thomas Anderson has been so consistent in his career with great films again and again. The acting in this movie seals the deal, Daniel Day Lewis and Paul Dano give their best performances to date. The cinematography shines, the soundtrack builds tension and the ending pays off. The ending is so chaotic due to the tension which has been building for the whole movie. I was gripped by this movie throughout its runtime. It does not shy away from the brutal sequences and every character is extreme except H.W. I will definitely re-watch many times.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
5.5/10. A messy fun time.
It is very excessive at points, especially in regard to the fight in Wakanda before Thanos enters, it feels very lifeless and bleak. The stone powers are very inconsistent as Thanos could have easily defeated Iron Man and the other avengers on Titan but still a good fight scene. The worst thing about this movie is that it kills half the population of the world and very important characters and brings them back in the next film for the bank. No consequences and no losses. Why will you kill Loki, the best character in MCU (in my opinion), when you can kill so many idiot superheroes? Stupid choice.
El Camino (2019)
7.3/10. Yeah B word
El Camino is a very good epilogue to Breaking Bad. It completed Jesse Pinkman's arc. One excellent aspect of this film is that actors even so many years later fit their role effortlessly and in the best way. Aaron Paul is still able to show the vulnerabilities and struggles of Jesse . All the other actors do a fantastic job too. Two things suck in this movie though, first Todd is obese suddenly, I have all the respect for the actor, but it does not fit the story at all. I just finished Breaking Bad and just jumped into the movie, so it really sticked out. Second, the movie is amazing and beautiful but it does not aim high. We don't have many antagonists except that guy who dies, who is not memorable at all. The cinematography and music choices fit the movie well but I still feel the movie could have done much more. The flashbacks were really good except the Todd burying the body of the cleaning lady one lasted too long.
Tonari no Totoro (1988)
9.4/10. I want a nap on Totoro too.
My Neighbour Totoro is an animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It is without doubt one of the greatest animated films of all time. I have always wanted to see a Hayao Miyazaki film as he has been frequently described as the greatest animator of all time. I have to watch a lot of his movies and also other animated films to figure that out. This film was a beautiful, gorgeous and marvelous ride. The story is really interesting as it contains well defined characters and a great setting. Needless to say, the animation in the film is masterful as you would expect from any Studio Ghibli film. The story does not contain any antagonist or bad guy, and I think it is one of the best idea to follow on that. You are always thinking that something is going to bad but it always comes back to the joyful ambience which the film wants to focus on the most. The animation is like a moving painting with focus on the characters. The soundtrack is well made and fits the movie easily. The only problem had with the movie was that Totoro could have been explored and developed more. I loved his character and I would have loved to see more of him in the film. I still prefer Grave of the fireflies as I felt more emotionally wise when I watched that, but My Neighbour Totoro is slightly better made out of the two.
Fargo (1996)
8.6/10. A pretty darn good movie.
Fargo is black comedy crime film directed and written by the Coen Brothers. Frances Macdormand, William H Macy, Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare are the part of the main cast. The movie has some very funny moments and overall maintains that comedic vibe. The performances by the main cast are wonderful and they fit their characters so well. The cinematography is wonderful as you will expect from Roger Deakins, one of the best cinematographers working today. The direction is really well done and the dialogue is truly great. The dialogue is realistic, but at the same time fits the story nicely and keeps you engaged. Two characters, Marge and Jerry, stick out as they are explored considerably. Jerry is a timid guy who is desparate for money. He thinks by having his wife kidnapped and keeping a chunk of the ransom, he will have enough money. His plan goes horribly wrong as he hires two men, Carl and Gaear, but Gaear turns out to be a sociopath who kills multiple people in the film. Jerry really wants to help his family but he is incredibly stupid. Then there is Marge who is the police chief of Brainerd. She is the most normal person in this movie and is really nice. She is a smart detective and lives with her husband. She successfully catches Gaear who also murders his accomplice, Carl, and arrests him. She is the good person in this film and Frances Macdormand plays her masterfully. The film has very few flaws. I would have liked them to explore Gaear more as he is an interesting character but he is explored moderately. The soundtracks were really good but sometimes loud. Overall Fargo is a great and enjoyable film.
Won't You Be My Neighbor? (2018)
73/100. I love you the way you are!
I got introduced to Fred Rogers through the movie, A Beautiful day in the Neighborhood. The best part of that film was Mister Rogers' character. So, instictively I searched for him on Google and found this documentary. It was a really good take on Mister Rogers' life. It really looked at his show very episodically. It was a fine touch but still there was room for improvement. First of all, the interviews could have been handled in a much better way, they just came in the middle of really important moments and points in the documentary and they did not really add much emotional depth. Then the music in the film was misplaced sometimes. It didn't 73/100

The positive thing of this documentary is that it is really edited terrifically and seamlessly. The emotional depth and development it wanted to achieve were never reached. Still worth watching!!!
Hotaru no haka (1988)
This is not an anti-war movie because it cannot stop another war.
What a beautiful ride! It is gut wrenching and melancholy in its delivery and very emotionally show the war's horrors. It is unique in the sense that it is not an account of a soldier in the battlefield but how two kids are affected by the war when they lose their parents. Setsuko is my favourite part of this, her innocence is in complete constrast of her surroundings where there are food shortages, houses are burnt and most importantly her mother died. The moment she dies, tears came into my eyes. Her death is set pretty well and slowly paced to give the essential emotional feel of the scene. The animation was fantastic and beautiful. It is also hopeful in the sense that they become ghosts and are still very much alive. Beautiful portrait of human suffering.
Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
It is gorgeous and unforgettable.
Punch-Drunk Love is sometimes weird, sometimes innocent and really brilliant. It is fast paced, sometimes holds you and then let's go. Adam Sandler's performance in this is my favourite performance of his. He really shines in this film, he is able to show Barry's vulnerabilities and rage really well. All the other performances are fantastic, and Philip Seymour Hoffman is the most memorable part of it. His part was not at all necessary or important, but he is masterful in his delivery. The romance was impressive and still paced perfectly. The chemistry was very nice to watch. The sisters really annoyed me, so they did their job. The ending sets out to be satisfying, but I still think the film could have done more in that part. What a beautiful movie! I will definitely re-watch it. First PTA feature.
Breaking Bad (2008)
Breaking Bad is one of the greatest shows of all time.
Breaking Bad is my favourite series. It holds a special place in my heart. It's kind of family. It is a very consistent show full of brilliant performances. But most importantly it has two main themes, character development and consequences. Every goddamn thing in this show has repurcussions. Bad and good happenings don't occur magically. Secondly, character development, you know what I mean. The transformation of Walt into Heisenberg has to be one of the greatest character transformations. Every season we saw new sides of our favourite characters, some becoming bitter and dangerous and some trying to find the right path. This show introduced a villian (Gus) in the middle of the series and made him one of the greatest antagonists in television history. Every character arc ends with the show's finale, most dead and some living. The ending breaks you wide open, and makes you think, was it worth it ,Walt? Hank dies, Walt kills Mike , he lets Jane die, he forces Jesse to kill Gale, all for himself and money. Even when he gets money in a trust for his son, you are not sure if Junior will take it or not. The show has so many symbolic things, like when the villains die, Walt takes some qualities from them. He becomes violent like Tucco and calm like Gus. At least he didn't become a neo nazi. I will definitely re-watch it multiple times and think about more to say about it.
Casablanca (1942)
This review has been written after my first viewing. Humphrey is perfect.
This take might seem interesting, but I don't love this movie. I like it a lot. I don't think it is a masterpiece. First of all, the story line is simple, a little interesting. At it's time, the film might have felt fresh and new but now it does not hold the same uniqueness. I love Humphrey Bogart's performance in this film. He is so brilliant. He gets that Rick is charming and at the same time hiding his true feelings. Ingrid Bergman is good, but not brilliant. Sometimes when she is talking about some unfortunate things , she feels kinda fake. Paul Hendrid's performance is very enjoyable. His lines are great and quotes win you over. The other characters give okay performances, nothing breathtaking. The love story does not feel finished and I am not talking about the end. The middle scenes in Paris when they just fall in love automatically seems improbable. The cinematography is very beautiful. One more thing, it is an American propaganda film.
Ladri di biciclette (1948)
Poverty and my bicycle..........
I love this film. I think it is one of the best films of all time. It is heartbreaking and will definitely make you cry at the end. The way the movie tackles poverty subtly and real life runs through it. Heck Vittorio De Sica did not hire popular actors for this film to effectively show real life. It even makes you care about the bicycle and you want to help the protagonist find the bicycle. The ending is just PERFECT. The guilt on Antonio's face in the end is depressing and the child's acting is great. I think I gave it a 9 because the film's effect has declined as it takes place in Post war Italy. At that time, Italy was very poor but now a modern viewer does not feel that much about it. You can clearly see that in Sight and See's polls about the greatest films ever made. In the first poll it was at top and now in the latest poll it is at 33 ( I don't consider critics to be always right about a film but I agree with them on this). Now there are two reasons for that, the first one as I discussed that the conditions have changed and neorealist films decline as reality around us changes. The other reason being that other fantastic films have been released that have surpassed Bicycle Thieves.
Rope (1948)
8.5 is my score. It's an experimental film which made 1917, Birdman and Russian Ark possible. Let's talk about it.
First of all, it's a great film. If you want to see a medium size, suspense movie, Rope is my pick. This movie is almost perfect and not gimmicky ( Roger Ebert might disagree). But it makes a grave error. In order to be this small, film does not make us sympathies with the victim. We don't even know David. We only see one shot of him in the whole runtime and it's death. I just don't get that. The acting by John Fall is superb, he embodies psychopath Brandon quite beautifully. I don't know how I felt about Farley Granger as Phillip as he manages to show how vulnerable Phillip is but he sometimes feel as superficial in acting. The other cast members manage to fit perfectly in the movie. James Stewart as Rupert is awesome, he is managed to act intelligent and suspicious quite comfortably. Now, let's talk about Alfred Hitchcock's work in this film. First the experiment was quite successful and something which has gave us brilliant films. The camera work is excellent, especially when Rupert was describing how he would get rid of David. It's definitely not the best Hitchcock film, the man directed VERTIGO AND PSYCHO. But it is really film to remembered for its suspense and wonderful camera work!!
Dial M for Murder (1954)
I am gonna talk the hell out of this film.
Firstly, this is a great thriller and a great watch. A lesser known Hitchcock film and underappreciated for its plot. A young wealthy woman marries a tennis player and I suppose they have a happy marriage for some time. But after when our protagonist finds out that his wife is having an affair with a mystery novelist, he fears his wife would leave him and leave him out of her will and decides to murder her. Now, this is one of the only problems with the film. For me, this is not a good enough motive and I know he depends upon her but a murder is a little too far. He makes an almost perfect plan in theory and wishes to find someone to do it for him as he thinks police will instantly suspect him. Now he has this college mate which was always a trouble maker and decides to follow. This is an another problem as it is very peculiar and I know the protagonist is very smart but it is odd he follows someone when he could have been caught. He realises the trouble maker is scamming lodgers by changing his name again and again and doing other illegal things too. So he calls him because he is selling a car and pretends to be another person. Our protagonist tells him everything he knows and proposes a solution. He pays him some money and asks him to murder his wife which he agrees to. It is a clever thing done by our protagonist. The plan from the start goes wrong and the troublemaker is murdered by the wife in self defence. The police arrests the protagonist's wife as it seems she intentionally has done it. The husband is happy. But one detective senses something fishy and checks his doubts out and it is found the husband is guilty of ordering the troublemaker to murder his wife. The ending is terrific. But at end, it's not as interesting as other Hitchcock films
The Hill (1965)
A great prison movie. Left, Right..........
The Hill is a great classic. A narcissistic sergeant thinks he can break and make soldiers but is astonished when 4 soldiers protest his right hand man's punishment ( the movie's name), and 1 soldier even dies. This movie manages to encompass racism, the dirty acts of Colonial British while dealing with mistreatment of prisoners. Another great performance by Sean Connery(RIP).
Fail-Safe (1964)
Not your average war movie.
This movie is a kind of a mixture of a political and war thriller. Henry Fonda gives a great performance as the President of the United States. That's the only thing you will remember. It is forgettable and lacks the tension to become what it sets out to be.
The Verdict (1982)
Another good Sidney Lumet film.
This film is okay. It takes the usual lawyer which only works for money and transitions him into a moral being fighting for justice. This film also focuses on morality subtlety while focusing on justice primarily. Paul Newman gives a good performance.
Serpico (1973)
A film about Police Corruptipn and also police brutality.
Serpico is a great drama carrying a strong performance by Al Pacino. In this movie almost every cop is a crook helping mob criminals, drug dealers or robbers. Serpico depicted by Al Pacino is a good cop trying to help clean the department. But at last he realizes it is nearly impossible as he gets shot in the face( he manages to survive). Al Pacino is not at his best because of we all know, The Godfather series is his masterpiece.
Network (1976)
One of the greatest drama satires of all time.
This film is phenomenal. Peter Finch gives a great performance. William Holden is also great in this comedy-drama. The film manages to produce the perfect mixture of madness and greed. I still think Robert De Niro should have won Best Actor for his performance in Taxi Driver instead of Peter Finch. It is also one of the greatest films of the great Sidney Lumet.
Dog Day Afternoon (1975)
Al Pacino makes it work.
This comedy-drama about a true story is marvelous. One of the best performances of Al Pacino. Great director work by Sidney Lumet.
Call Me by Your Name (2017)
A wonderful Love Story
This movie is a beautiful piece of art. Filled with gorgeous cinematography , it manages to fill your heart with ache at the end. A beautiful love story filled with difficulties makes this movie a great watch.
12 Angry Men (1957)
It's one of the best classics.
This movie deals with jury justice very rightfully and explains democracy in a nutshell. It's acting and direction is one of the best.
Paths of Glory (1957)
Paths of Glory stands the time to stay an explosive masterpiece.
Paths of Glory manages to define the anti-war genre for so many decades. It questions moral values of soldiers and desperation. It is a Stanley Kubrick MASTERPIECE.
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006)
The one of best Mockumentory Movie Ever Made
It is a funny criticism of American Politics. One of the best comedy movies ever. There is nothing else to talk about it.
