Based on a True Story (2023)
I hate everything about it.
I hate giving low reviews, even when it´s a story I really disliked I always try to look at the positives and really try not going bellow a 4/10. I hate doing this, it makes me feel like the old bitter food critic from Ratatouille and, and I just don't wanna be that.
This being said...
I personally thought episode one was absolutely unwatchable, I wanted to quit at the 10 minute mark but convinced myself to keep watching to "give it a fair chance".
I thought it was extremely trashy and immoral, I didn´t like any of the characters, its a bit too predictable and the worst crime of it all: Its utterly unfunny. Also the general plot and the ending of episode 1 were perfect in making me hate it even more than I already did, even if we all saw it coming.
The one good thing I will say about it is that the acting seemed decent. I thought the characters were believable (even if I hated everything about them). Sadly this is not something that is too important to me, I'm a story person who focuses on story elements and dialogue so, good job to these actors and all, but that´s just a cherry on top of a really bad cake for me.
Usually I give comedies a bit more leeway on first episodes because some of the best ones out there start a bit cold and then get much better when the characters have settled in and the comedy starts finding its form.
Some of my favorite comedies of all times like The Simpsons, Brooklyn99 or Parks and Recs don't really reach their true potential until the second season or even later.
But in the end this first episode did not manage to get a single laugh out of me, not even a smile nor the faintest of nose exhales. And mostly for this reason but also others I have mentioned I feel obligated to rate this harshly.
Score 2/10. I personally hate everything about this.

Extraordinary (2023)
Some very good ingredients that were not quite fully cooked
One easy war to describe Extraordinarily could be, xmen, but it's a comedy.
Another way to describe it, not much in the plot, but instead in style would be: "What we do in the shadows", but with superheroes instead of vampires.
That specific kind of British humor tries to demystify a certain fantastical element by marrying it with the mundane modern world and culture, looking to create a humorous tone dissonance of sorts. (like wwdits or ghosts)
And personally, I love the idea, I don't want to say brilliant because it's nothing new, but I think it's a great concept that lends itself really well to create a lot of fun situations, which is kind of the point of this kind of comedy.
In respect to how well this is accomplished, I would say its a bit of a mixed bag. I did find a lot of the situations funny or at least fun, and I thought a lot of references or details were somewhat clever or funny elements (like the mother who has the power to control technology but is so un-savvy that she always needs a co-pilot to help her navigate her own power or the pizza place called "the pizza bucket"), the truth is that a lot of the jokes are not very funny, its not rare that we see a scene that is trying hard, for a bit too long, to create a joke that, to me, personally, didn't really come together (like the scene with Hitler´s resurrection, or the racist country singer in ep 3), and while the general premise does work really well and a lot of elements are well crafted, the truth is that the characters themselves (and therefore the dialogue) prevented the show from reaching its true potential(to me personally).
The only character I only like so far is the medium girl, and sadly, a lot of her scenes are quite underwhelming, her boyfriend i don't really get, the main character I started liking, but it feels like she's getting flanderized into her pathetic petty loser role faster than you can say flash, and I think the humor with the boss turned child is just sort of... trashy.
I think extraordinary proves a fundamental truth of comedy series, it doesn't matter how good your plot is, the true juice of the show is going to be the characters and their interactions, and this element, to me, lacked just a bit of work, it's not terrible, but it definitely hindered the experience for me, let's see how it turns out, but for the moment, I give this a sort of fun 6.5/10.
The Amazing Race: Many Firsts But Don't Be Last (2022)
One of the weakest episodes in TAR
Don´t get me wrong, I love TAR, I have watched almost all seasons, and across these seasons there are some really good episodes and some really weak ones. These episodes can be good or bad for different reasons. Being a reality tv show a lot is out of the hands of the producers and a lot of the fun we have can come from interesting teams that we get to see, personal challenges that arise from the difficulty of the race, or simply brilliant showcases of the cultures and the landscapes around the world.
But in the case of season 34 episode 1, I felt like the producers really set themselves up for a weak episode for two reasons.
-FIrst is the scramble mode, now I realize this one is more personal, but to me, having the teams able to clear challenges in any order just made the whole thing more confusing and the progress more difficult to track, hence, the story that the episode was telling became a bit blurred in the midst of the confusion
-Secondly, the challenges themselves were extremely weak, and I rarely say this, but I think this is an objective fact. We have seen some really cool challenges across the seasons and we know what a cool challenge in TAR looks like, there are those that really test the players to the limit like the dreaded rice paddy challenges, and some that just get you really deep into the culture like being a mechanic for tuk tuks in Southeast Asia, or the ones that require them to learn a skill they are really not comfortable at, like singing or bartending. But the challenges in this episode were just extremely bland, with very little room to really test the mental resistance of the teams or showcase how they deal with a challenge...
All we got to see was people hitting a block of ice, spinning a barrel, and see-saw a log for 1 hour, it wasn't interesting, it wasn't fun and I felt like it didn't really allow us to get to know the teams as everyone just got to the task and eventually completed it.
Despite this weak first episode, I want to believe that the rest of the season will have better episodes and that it will not disappoint, however, I would lie if I said I´m not a bit worried about this scrambled mode messing up the usual dynamic of the fun, I can totally understand them wanting to add twists, but they should be careful to retain what makes the show fun in the first place.
The Green Planet (2022)
Truely remarkable
After hearing about this show and watching the trailer I was extremely excited to start watching, and when I started doing so I quickly realized this was even above my expectations.
I honestly had not felt this way about a documentary since Planet Earth and Planet Earth 2, two documentaries that really went above and beyond compared to anything else from their time, pioneering and taking documentary making to the next level.
Such is the case with "The Green Planet" which presents itself as a legitimate heir, able to withstand the weight of the crown.
The most impressive and revolutionary aspect of the show is without a doubt the way in which they managed to capture the dynamism of plant life , greatly thanks to revolutionary camera and filmmaking technology and know-how, produced by a team of veterans, toped with the well-polished narrative style of David Attenborough and backed by what I can only imagine were hours upon hours of extensive and well-directed work.
This is an absolute gem of a documentary series and I would greatly recommend it to anyone.
Diabolical (2022)
A collection of short stories set in the boys universe, each with a different animation style
It seemed like a good idea, it should've worked, but did it?
While the overall experience was sort of entertaining at times and the different animation styles were not bad, the stories felt bland, and apart from a few, most were quite bad, with repetitive plots and overall relying on very graphical violent scenes as their (only) selling point.
80% of the stories can be summarized in the following way :
A random person gets a dose of "compound V" in one way or another, the effects seem initially positive but eventually turn negative, the episode culminates with a violent scene where everything goes wrong and people die (very violently) , Vaught corporate are jerks and indifferent about the whole situation, they protect their own interests.
If you are a fan of the boys you might wanna try this out for yourself and make your own opinion, if anything, just to watch the 2 or 3 best episodes, however, if this is not the case my advice is to probably skip this one.
The Cuphead Show! (2022)
Same problems as space jam 2
There is no reason for anyone to watch this show, it does not matter if you are 6 years old or 60 years old, the show has some cool music, cool animation and is full of refferences to the game, other than that it is completely void, empty and there is nothing to be found.
I think even calling it a kid´s show is insulting to kids, to their sense of humor and to their intelligence.
The music and animation are kind of cool, thus bumping the score from a solid 1/10 to a 3/10.
Foundation (2021)
It does not deliver what it promised.
Foundation simply does not deliver on what it promises
Coming from someone who did not read the book I thought Episode 1 was fantastic, it had some minor flaws, but I couldn't care less, it presents not only a planet colonization setup, but it spices it up with a twist, this "foundation concept", which basically means that the people on the colony project are not only tasked to build a society but also having to create a way to preserve human knowledge and reboot civilization if this was to fall. "Brilliant," I thought to myself. This seems like very fertile mental soil to me, perfectly fun, a sandbox that will deal with all the aspects of human knowledge, science, education, civilization what kind of questions will be asked throughout the show? How will they handle them? The potential was undeniable and it was all happening in this seemingly vibrant, robust, and complex galactic stage (the visuals did help said stage be more appealing of course) but the main thing was that the idea had already planted the seed for a wonderful story.
Sadly none of this happens...there is no planet colonization exept for a 1 minute sped up montage, there is no foundation, no preservation of knowledge, if anything, the opposite happens, in what might as well be the worst plot twist of all times, this fantastic and vivid concept of knowledge preserving and society rebooting that the foundation initially turned out to be your generic run of the mill militant rebel operation, there is no talk on the foundation ever except at the time when it's presented and a 40 ish word dialogue on whether they will keep a base 10 mathematical system or not, now, I'm not a detective by trade, but I suspect a plot twist is suposed to make a story more interesting not... less interesting.
From the 3 main Arcs that were presented I thought the most enjoyable was the one with the Galactic Emperors, It didnt seem so interesting at first , but there ended up being some cool scenes and conversations, I like the questions that were raised, these individuals that tried to learn from different versions of themselves, but wondered if they were ever truely be able to avoid these same mistakes, there were some good ideas, some solid acting, mildly captivating scenes, heck, even the religion aspect I didnt mind that much, I know it was heavily criticized and not originaly in the books, but knowing that Asimov fashioned the galactic empire with the inspiration of the Roman Empire in mind, then this is a detail that even seems fitting, seeing how it even draws a parallel with real Roman History, having to strugle against an emerging religion so in this sense I thought most of the Emperor arc was fine.
The real problem of the show, in my humble opininion, lies with the Terminus and the Gail arc, where the main ideas resided and where the main ideas failed to bloom propperly, as I prevously said, the gail arc starts in a very exiting fashion, but it just crashes and burns after a certain point, there isnt really a single interesting scene or idea after she steps in that ship to terminus in episode 1 -2
The Terminus arc is not much better, I initially quite liked the character of Salvor, the way she played with people using probability was fun, it was original, and it remained believable, but she quickly turned into a Mary Sue, constantly saving everyone around her from their own incompetence. Which quickly felt redundant and lazy, and quite frankly, there is very little of interest that happens here as well, sure, the vault question might've been interesting at some point, but when the answer turns out to be the worst plot twist of all times, its kind of a give and take.
In conclusion, while certain aspects of the show are enjoyable it just feels disapointing, a show of similar quality that had aimed lower might feel much more satisfying, and Im not talking about the fact its an adaptation from Asimov since I couldnt care less, I didnt even read the books, but if you are going to chose an idea to base your whole story around, why not exploit and explore that idea!?!?!?!?!
I give it a passable yet particularly sad 6/10, its not a normal 6, its a sad 6.
Sweet Tooth (2021)
An amazingly dull adult show or a really disturbing kid´s show?you decide
This is a pretty good show about a Doctor and his wife who are faced with a series of really tough moral choices while living in a lingering branch of a crumbled society, and the story of a woman who finds herself in her vocation of helping others while working towards building the future.
There is also Annoying Kid with Antlers whose only goal in life is to sabotage himself and his friends, he is acompanied by Edgy Teenage Girl named Karla or Bunny or something, she basicaly just nags and walks, its her thing, but its okay because you forget about her as soon as she stops talking, there is also Big Guy, whose name is quite literaly Big Guy, and you guessed it, hehe, he is a pretty big dude :D, and I have to say I feel a bit bad for the actor, he did what he could with what he was given but he just wasnt given much at all.
Sadly these 3 people take most of the screen time,
time that wouldve been better spent at the clinic or at the refuge.
Also I think the plot is a complete mess, neither the virus, nor the hybrids, nor the whole last men ideology make any sense at all.
