I would describe this as a coming of age period piece that was maybe slightly reminiscent of maybe a Dead Poets Society type of movie. The struggles felt real and the few comedic aspects had me laughing out loud. It was well-written, the acting was good, the casting was great. It was one of the best movies I have seen in a while. Paul Giamatti is such a good actor and his witty humor was a delight. I love the characters he takes on and I hope the supporting cast of actors go on to act in other movies, they were great. Sure, movies like Barbie were quirky and fun this year, but this definitely was more of what I would consider to be worthy of a best picture nomination.
My problem with this show is that they missed it on a few key things. This is a review of season 1. A child killer is running around however parents are just letting kids ride bikes in the woods? I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be happening. The second thing is that all these killings just start happening when the guy is released to the abbey? If there were many killers around, wouldn't they be killing before his release? 3rd, why is this cop not thinking that this guy is responsible for her sisters death? Anyways, just giving some key points without giving away anything. It just doesn't seem they thought this through well enough in production.
I love Tilda Swinton but even she did not save this movie for me. This is not a love story. Because one cannot be in love with a drug addict because without trust you have nothing. It is like being in love with Santa Clause, it is not a real person. This girl is annoying because she lets this loser overtake her life.
Excellent acting but annoying movie.
