Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024)
All you would want
This is not a film looking to win an Oscar. Yet, it pushes all the right buttons for those of us of a certain age. It touches on the past, so elegantly, while fighting stereotypes that we face in law-enforcement today. Bacon's character speaks to a dark place. Old friends Billy and Taggert make us comfortable and safe in a space where the bad guy is ahead of us. Would have wished that Reiser would have has more of presence. Kudos to the producers for having the photos of Inspector Todd, a real life Detroit cop on the wall. This film is worthy of your time. Nostalgia, fun, action, and respect to our culture today.
Departure (2019)
Wildly underrated
The six episode arc is such a winner for this type of plot. They've kept it fresh for three different seasons, and season three in particular was beautifully filmed in Canada. I have no idea of the profitability on these type of shows, but they're wildly entertaining. Archie Panjabi it simply terrific and everything she said, and for three seasons of this has been a terrific lead.
If you like, crisp drama, that's on point and mature, this is a series for you, and worthy of a binging day
Had to find season three on YouTube, not sure why no other streaming service would've already plugged this in. Worth your time.
Hunter Killer (2018)
Worth your time
Good story, action and location scenes were well done. Enjoy this two hour joyride. Butler is terrific in it. Also, Common was very very good. I never would've guessed the film was shot in Bulgaria.
American Siege (2021)
His best film in a year.
Nothing better than another Grindstone production, where Bruno comes in for a day and shoots all his scenes in one afternoon. That said, this story has some meat to it. Ty Gretzky was decent, and looks like him Mom...who also probably filmed her scenes in a day. In fact, Od bet on it (for those who know what that means, enjoy!!)
I didn't enjoy the character who was the female villain. An young actress from CT, who had a terrible fake Southern accent. Overall, the film was shot in 8 days, so the scenes are tight and likely filmed very close to one another. This was MUCH a better than expected.
Fortress (2021)
Grindstone keeps grinding.
Check this off the Bruno list. As usual, filmed his scenes in a day and the whole project was less than three weeks. Kelly Greyson is flat out gorgeous and has some acting chops. Story is thin, but there will be a Fortress 2.
Deadlock (2021)
Checked off the list
I've committed to watch every low budget film that Bruno makes. Muldoon was terrible in this film, and I like the man as an actor. The project lacked the usual co-stars like Lydia Hall, Chad Michael Murray, etc that Bruno usually works with.
Felt like this was shot in about 15-20 days.
A Good Man (2014)
So much better than you think.
Well I will agree Seagal has made some real "winning" films over the last 15 years, this was actually very good. Set in Eastern Europe, you get a great amount of location shots, good action, and the script was halfway decent.
The Protégé (2021)
Add to your viewing liat
Fan of Maggie Q, who always brings a professional performance. Keaton was terrific, as usual. Sam Jackson more or less plays Sam Jackson now in every role. The script wasn't the best, but the story moved along fairly well. A couple of plot twist helped drive the last 30 minutes of the film.
End of a Gun (2016)
Better than reviews.
If you're looking for Bogarts performance in Casablanca, skip this. If your looking for 80 minutes of Seagal, an unknown, but really hot chick and a fictional action story filmed in Eastern Europe...you're in the right place. Pace of film was good, didn't drag. This was probably one of these Grindstone productions that was filmed in 15 days.
Survive the Game (2021)
Another 14 day shoot
The money behind all these BW films the last few years is the same company. They've done a ton of these in Puerto Rico and Cincinnati. BW comes in and films all his scenes in a day and they film the rest in two weeks. Follow the money.
The Equalizer (2021)
Better than reviews
It's a predictable, yet awkwardly solid show. The only knock, and it's strictly from a concept standpoint. The mother of a current 15 year old was routinely away from her young daughter in her early years, while she was an operative? And no one knew different? The Aunt, the child's father, school teachers? Maybe a stretch of a critique. I like the Queen, very likeable character and she is strong in the role...just not sure the backstory fills in.
Line of Duty (2019)
Ignore the negative reviews
Yes, a slow start. But the story builds throughout the Film. Eckhart, Eaton and McKenzie were all solid. Great ending. And Dina Meyer still has the best eyes ever. Filmed in Birmingham with a lot of local extras part of the project.
Ted Lasso: Midnight Train to Royston (2021)
What a final scene
Obviously another great episode, should lead up to a wonderful season finale. But what a final scene!!!
Blood Father (2016)
Totally worth your time.
Great story, and plenty of action. Erin Moriarty is developing into a superstar.
Ted Lasso: Beard After Hours (2021)
Viewers need to think here
If you are watching this show for a feel good football story, where they come back and win a Title, then you are watching the wrong show. It's episodes like this one that win awards for writing and performance. Hunt was brilliant here.
Cold Pursuit (2019)
Sit back and soak it in
Worthy of a couple of hours. Quirky, dark and Liam!!
Force of Nature (2020)
Another Grindstone gem
Grindstone makes all these low budget films, that are forced to shoot in 15 days, and you see a ton of the same cast. Our pal Bruno backed out of this, as Mel Gibson stepped in. Hirsch gets better as the film goes on, and I like the Boz, who married to the Director. Cool ending.
Reprisal (2018)
Bruno!
Better than you think. Bruno likely filmed his scenes in about 3 hours. Olivia Culpo is Rhode Island's finest export. Not going to win an Oscar...but. Grilling delivers...again.
Ted Lasso: Man City (2021)
Mike Dean Cameo!
If the Premiership was smart, they'd find a way to get more players and teams to allow their names to be associated with this gem of a show.
10 Minutes Gone (2019)
Better than the reviews
So, Bruno usually comes in for two days to shoot. He did this in one afternoon. Evidently, the finance company in his last few films have an agreement with the City of Cincinnati. I'm counting four films in a year. Meadow Williams may never get work again. The Commish was pretty good in this, and it wasn't a bad story, but the fraud behind the camera was shocking. Lotta people stole money here.
Hard Kill (2020)
Add to the list.
Another Bruno film where he flew in for a day and filmed all his scenes. He must be aligned with a finance team where he has to make 10-15 of these films. I thought Natalie Eva Marie was halfway decent in this. She is an amazingly beautiful woman, and showed some acting chops here. The ending was flat.
Survive the Night (2020)
Better than reviews.
This is another Bruno classic, where he filmed his scenes in two days. It's a tad slow, but more than watchable. Lydia Hall , who is in a ton of these B movies, has some growth here. I think she drop dead gorgeous, so perhaps I'm a bit biased. Add to your list.
Officer Down (2013)
Decent cast and story
Filmed in the eyesore known as Bridgeport, CT, where the Mayor went to prison for corruption charges. After doung time, he was re-elected after his release and remains in Office.
With a good cast, it's a partial redemption story. Dorff is really good in this (Watch the Fox Series Deputy if you like him). The great James Woods always brings an edge to a film, and the ending was solid. The strip climb scenes were filmed at a dump called Scruples, which remains open today.
I'm unsure why they filmed this in CT. Had to be driven by one of the investors.
Yellowstone (2018)
Mount Rushmore Show
When you look at Kevin Costner's Oscar winning career, with a dozen legitimate classics in his portfolio, this is his finest work. That is not to disparage the creative and attentive writing. Kelly Reilly should have won an Emmy for her work the last two seasons, and the supporting cast has blossomed. Add in the beauty of the UT and MT region, and it's perfection. The Season 4 trailer that dropped today was insane.
Acts of Violence (2018)
Better than you think.
Another checkmark off the Bruno "B" movie list. Again, Willis films all his scenes in one day. Cole Hauser, who has exploded into superstardom with Yellowstone, was very solid here.
