This film was truly well done, all three main characters were real. Regret, guilt, love buried in a challenging relationship. A soul journey that couldn't have been told any better. Matthew McC. had me in tears which really only rarely happens. He got me all through.
The film led you step by step towards the whole, you could follow each revelation, lesson of Arthur's journey as if you were with him, there. An atypical Gus Van Sant Film sure. BUT he was able to capture the fine in between the lines way of the Japanese culture which talks in symbols more than direct expression, in a beautiful and still GVS-creepy surprising different way.
Go see it if you had regret in your life, you won't regret it ;-)

It is a rare thing where plot and actors are so delicately developed. I loved that one could only go with it, and piece by piece, until the actual end, the story revealed itself with well thought out timing. Just with a sentence every now and again you needed to piece it altogether. Just loved it. Clever, a rare commodity. The music supported scenery brilliantly. This is the sort of "undercover" thriller. Not for the impatient viewer, it's for those, who want to solve the puzzle, and you don't get disappointed. In the end you are just really are happy you have been part of it, touched about how deep the connections run, revealed with perfect timing.10 out 10 stars.
I haven't read any critics about this film, i stumbled across it by accident. and it was a very lucky one.
this movie touched me on every level of my soul and i am actually proud of Will Smith that he made such a movie. He embraced this role with every fibre of his soul & transported the message(s)in such an impressive way.
The storyline made me actually wonder whether this really happened. A man who couldn't bear his loss and the guilt. It was real, sad, human, loving, kind & just the bravest thing i have ever seen to the last consequence.
watch this movie and be moved, i can only take my head off to such a masterpiece of film, filled with so much love, detail & respect for the human condition with avoiding all the Hollywood cliché's.
that was just marvellous & goes into the space of all my 'most favourite & best movies of all times'
