Killer Stress: A National Geographic Special (2008)
Intriguing
I watched this documentary as part of a university class. I found it to be very captivating and well-paced.
One thing I would like to see if such a topic is ever revisited in the future is to see the stress response in other animals, as I am now curious about the stress response in non-primates.
Another minor complaint is that I think the National Geographic logos in the opening are too jarring and out-of-place for a serious documentary.
Other than that, good topic, well research with a diverse range of experts weighing in on the topic. For a film made in 2008, it holds up surprisingly well for modern standards.
Fireman Sam: Elvis Sings the Blues (2008)
My least favourite episode
Series 6 and 7 of the show are, in my opinion, the weakest seasons of this otherwise excellent program, and out of them all, this episode infuriated me the most.
Station Officer Steele was completely out of line and even ableist towards Elvis while he is using a wheelchair. This is before Series 9, but I can't even imagine him treating Hannah the same way. Additionally, he was an absolute buffoon to purposefully stick his own head in a metal gate, despite knowing that he will get stuck.
The bit with the vehicle gearup with the wheelchair was kind of amusing, but other than that, this episode was the absolute worst. Elvis deserved better.
SpongeBob SquarePants: Graveyard Shift/Krusty Love (2002)
A great time
Every. Single. Time. I see SpongeBob dancing around Squidward's little boat going "Night, night, night, night", I get this goofy grin on my face. This episode is just a riot from start to finish. Other than above, I also love the bit with SpongeBob going to the dumpster and freaking out every step of the way, and how Squidward keeps his deadpan snark going even when telling a scary story and in the face of fear. As someone who typically works at night, it gets pretty quiet being in the kitchen all by myself for hours on end, so I really wish I had a SpongeBob to joke around with.
Krusty Love? Yeah it's pretty good too.
The Sterilization of Leilani Muir (1996)
Horrific, but Important
This documentary was included as part of a sociology course in my university. First, let it be known for other viewers that this film contains a lot of triggering material, including discussions of abuse, ableism, and mentions of suicide.
Nonetheless, this film is very eye-opening about the hidden history of horrific crimes against disabled people in Canada. The amount of disregard for basic human life as demonstrated by the eugenics board was simply jaw-dropping, and the fact that these statements were often accompanied by archival footage of children, in addition to many of the film's subjects being children themselves when they were forcibly sterilized, only aides in showing how inhumane these organizations were.
Leilani Muir is no longer with us, but her case will always be remembered as pushback against the government for their failure to uphold human rights for everyone, regardless of ability.
Total Drama Island: Paintball Deer Hunter (2007)
Down with Heather!
I watched this series together with my siblings, and I really like this particular episode for what it does with Beth and Lindsay's characters. I'm happy for them finally standing up for themselves and realizing "hey, Heather is a demon spawn straight from the depths of hell, let's not hang out with her anymore"
We were both also very happy to see Cody voted off and leave the show. Cody's entire character up to this point has been very creepy, with most of his screentime spent harassing Gwen, who is clearly not into him.
In conclusion, Beth and Lindsay good, Heather and Cody bad, and DJ and Owen were lowkey the best part of the episode.
Numberjacks (2006)
Great for Children!
Numberjacks is a great program to use to help children learn basic math concepts. Each topic is discussed thoroughly, in simple language and with enough repetition that a small child will easily understand and come away from the episode having learned something.
The animation holds up surprisingly well, though some character design choices can be a bit creepy for those who aren't used to them.
The characters all have unique personalities, and they go through changes as the series progresses. It was very satisfying to me, as a child, watching Three grow up and be able to complete missions on her own.
Parents will also enjoy the witty writing and good humour. I recommend this show speficially to parents with children aged three to seven.
Care Bears: Journey to Joke-a-Lot (2004)
Surprisingly good
I had this movie on DVD as a little girl, and me and my sibling watched it all the time. When we watched it again as older teens, we were surprised at how well it held up.
Yes, the CGI is hilariously bad by modern standards, but for low budget CGI in 2004, I'm sure it could have looked worse. There is no excuse for those bug abominations, though, ew.
The movie is pretty funny, with some good visual gags, and the set design is also pretty nice.
I really like the messages of "making jokes when bad things happen is inappropriate" and "think before you speak", as I feel those are still very important things for kids to learn.
The songs are pretty hit-or-miss. The opening and the credits song are bad, but Funshine's two solos and the Joke-a-Lot group song all slap.
Overall, it didn't age quite as terribly as expected. I would recommend this to parents with young children, and maybe to adults too, just for a laugh.
Care Bears: The Giving Festival Movie (2010)
Decent, but...
On its own, this is a perfectly acceptable movie. The animation and characters are fine, and there's nothing in it that I would deem harmful towards its target audience of small children.
My main problem with this movie is that it doesn't really know what it's doing for the majority of the runtime. First it seems the issue is that the Care Bears won't be able to hold the Giving Festival because of the bad weather, but then they forget about that and start with this anthology sort of thing. The anthology made some sense in the Rescue movie, since it was an award show, and was presented like a short film festival in universe, but I don't understand the point of it here. Then at the end, we get a completely random climax that is introduced and then resolved in like five minutes. While it's nice to see Princess Starglow again, this subplot really didn't need to be in the movie.
Also, this may just be a me thing, but I really don't like the look of the CGI Adventures in Care-a-Lot movies. Sure, Journey to Joke-a-Lot and Big Wish Movie are probably objectively worse, but the CGI AiCAL movies just look so flat and soulless.
Not the worst Care Bears thing imaginable, but certainly not the franchise's high point.
Toy Story 4 (2019)
Boring
I think the best way I can sum up my feelings about this movie is explaining the first time I saw it. During the COVID-19 lockdown of 2020, my younger sibling and I made good use of our Disney+ subscription to watch all the old Pixar movies that we never saw as children. We got through the first three Toy Story movies and loved them and rewatched them afterwards, but this one? We shut it off about thirty minutes in and watched Finding Nemo instead.
The plot is very slow and it takes forever for any major plot beats to happen. I also didn't like Forky very much, and found him very annoying.
The animation is spectacular, a big step up from the last, but I definitely agree with others that Toy Story should have remained a trilogy.
Zeke's Pad (2008)
Trash
Well, this show was a dumpster fire and a half. Genuinely, one of the worst animated series I've seen in my life.
My biggest problem with the series is that Zeke himself is the biggest asshole ever. He is very selfish and only does anything he does throughout the series for his own benefit. Even in more serious situations, where his parents squabble and he thinks they're drifting apart, he only decides to help them because them being sad could ruin his chances of getting with the girl he likes on Valentine's Day.
Other than that, the other characters were also unlikable, annoying, and underdeveloped. I did like Jay and Maxine, but I definitely think both of them are too good for Zeke.
Additionally, the episodes all follow the same plot beats, no one ever learns their lesson, and for a show about art, the animation is butt ugly. I would skip this one.
PAW Patrol: All Paws on Deck (2022)
Great!
I was very excited when this episode was announced, because getting to see every single pup working together in one episode sounded like the coolest idea ever.
I really liked our new villain. She has a very original, threatening plan, she is well designed, and her voice actress does an excellent job with her performance.
My favourite part was seeing all the different pup combinations and how they all worked together to stop the villain and save the city. Even villainous pups like Sweetie tagged along for the ride.
My only complaint is that we didn't get enough Arrby, and that all of his dialogue was recycled. Other than that, this was a fantastic episode.
Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses (2006)
Great!
I didn't grow up with this movie, but I really wish I did. It has a great story, the animation, while a bit rubbery, is still pretty good for 2006, and the music is stellar. Definite recommend.
