Southern Gospel (2023)
A sweet sweet spiritual movie
Do not look at the 5.7 that is the current rating for Southern Gospel. This is not a cheesy, church actors movie that has the potential to be good but fails miserably because it is so poorly produced. This is as well made as Jesus Revolution, a story of redemption and forgiveness and real life with real issues that can negatively shape our destinies if we let them. Some find their way out of the vortex of darkness by the light of Christ, yet others choose to take matters into their hands and suffer the consequences. Southern Gospel addresses topics such as child molestation, addiction, and suicide and might not be suitable for young viewers, but it has so much to offer as a faith-based movie and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The Shift (2023)
Angel Studios is allowed a flop...
... just wish I had trusted my instinct and not wasted $5 on renting it. I think given the quality of The Chosen, Sound of Freedom, and Cabrini, I was expecting more. Then again attempting to turn Job into si-fi while mixing Revelation and apocalyptic prophecy into it on a low budget, I'm not sure why I expected more. I knew going into it a little bit about it. In summary The Shift is a B-rated hot mess and if convincing non-Christians of the sovereignty and greatness of a divine creator without being too "Christiany" was the goal, The Shift fails miserably. The only redeeming aspect are the actors. I very much enjoyed seeing Elizabeth Tabish, Paras Patel, and, Jordan Walker Ross from The Chosen in different roles. But if you're looking for another Angle success, this isn't it.
Cabrini (2024)
Epic Quality Film Making
I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't what I got from Cabrini. This is a "crowd funded" movie characteristic of an epic Hollywood production with a compellingly beautiful classical music score. And while this was released on International Women's Day, it is not the story of a "feminist" fighting for her rights as a woman, but of an ordinary Catholic nun led by God to do extraordinary things in fighting for the rights of people to be treated as human beings, especially the unacknowledged and destitute orphaned children running wild in the streets of late 19th century New York City. This unassuming, stoic heroine is not alone in her ventures but is assisted by other unassuming and gentle nuns and a few, although reluctant, good men including the Pope. In reading more about Frances Xavier Cabrini, it goes without saying that her greatest advocate was God, and prayer was her weapon, although we don't see a great deal of this in the movie. But she was 'as shrewd as a viper and as innocent as a dove'. For anyone facing challenges and obstacles knowing in their heart that providence has placed them where they are supposed to be, this movie will inspire and give hope.
Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Superb Acting, Far to Long
Every actor delivers a superb performance. One or more will walk away with an Oscar. Acting is not my issue with the movie. I knew that this was a dark and depressing story going in with no real light at the end of the tunnel but one can only take so much doom and gloom. I didn't check the run time and I will never make that mistake again. I know Scorsese's intentions were good in wanting get the full effect of the horrific atrocities committed against the Osage, but I've seen documentaries on the subject that better held my attention. Three and a half hours is too long for any movie. This is 2023 and we're lucky if we can pay attention to anything more than an hour.
Sound of Freedom (2023)
Heavy, deep subject matter, but enlightening.
Normally I can put down at least half a bucket of popcorn while at the movie theater. About an eighth of the way in watching Sound of Freedom, my appetite was gone, as was my husband's, and a heaviness came over me. It was deeply disturbing and yet hopeful at the same time. But for me it was important to see as it is a subject matter I will avoid at all costs because I can't bear to see children hurt, and while you don't see the graphic content of the subject matter, they couldn't have done a better job portraying just how brutally hurt these children are being enslaved in Child Sex Trafficking. I wondered if the character played by Jim Caviezel really teared up as much as Caviezel did in the movie, then I saw an interview with Tim Ballard and I realized how traumatizing his line of work is and what it's taken out of him and I'm sure he cried much more than Caviezel did. This is not a movie we want to see. It's a movie that we need to see, and then we need to think about what action we will take to help stop child sex trafficking. I know that we all can do something. The most powerful and important movie you will see this year, and it will stick to you perhaps forever.
