Welcome to Hard Times (1967)
Question : Was the horse actually shot (in real life) ?
In the first 10 mins, the nutjob stranger shoots a dying horse. The horse after the shooting reacts so realistically (of being shot) that it comes across as if it was actually shot (in real life). Can anyone confirm or deny this ? I presume it was wonderful acting by the horse.... something i've never seen in a movie quite like it.
Usually the camera moves away to avoid obviously a horse being trained to play dead or moving thereafter. Which is pretty much impossible.
Going through a western phase at the moment, and this movie hits the thirsty spot pretty bang on. Fonda oozes quality - pure brilliance.
The Empty Man (2020)
Eerily like an real life 'cult'
The film makes a few poignant remarks about the cult in the movie which eerily correlates with a cult that is in currently operating in the USA. That is scientology
Eg. Planning for 500 years (Scientology requires a one-billion-year pledge from it's adherents).
The girl (Amanda Quail) being moved upwards in rank in order to achieve what every member's goal is (in scientology, the highest rank is Operating Thetan Level 8)
Even the lady recruiting new members is eerily similar to how Scientology recruits its potential followers.
Also, in the film, it seems those that are high up in society (police, politicians etc) are all part of it.
Quien a hierro mata (2019)
Exceptionally powerful storyline
Really good film... the story line was excellent.
The title was apt. Each of the main characters formed a triangle of revenge seekers - wanting to get back at each other for what they felt being wronged by the other :
The sons wanting to get back at the father for not helping out.
The father wanting to teach the sons a murderous lesson, for not obeying him.
One son wanting to inflict deathly spite on the nurse because the nurse wouldnt oblige with their demands. He tries by ramming him in a car chase, only for him to get killed by an oncoming car.
The nurse wanting to seek retribution on the father, because he finds out the father was the drug lord responsible for killing the nurse's brother through addiction.
The father knowing he was being killed by the nurse, decides to get his revenge both on the sons, and the nurse - to be carried out after his demise - in quite a cynical manner.
The son who is in jail wants deadly payback and so orders the killing of the nurse's wife, because he feels he's been robbed from his rightful inheritance - because the father left all the wealth to the nurse (knowing that he would 'kill' two birds with stone - deprive the sons of his wealth and because of this, the sons wanting to kill the nurse's wife to make him suffer)
The same jailed son, gets his punishment from within the jail by being stabbed to death by the henchmen of the columbian drug lord that he owed money
Moral : no one wins when the red mist overtakes ones senses.
Ida Red (2021)
Puzzled ref ending
Can someone please explain how Ida is released from prison towards the end ? What does Benson Drummond do to get her out of prison when she was denied parole ?
Also, with the heist. Why would the cash smugglers call the police when they know full well it would open a can of worms ? Why were they shipping $$$millions into the country without declaring it.. ? And had they done so in the past ? Etc etc. Furthermore, it would mean stopping any more shipments happening in the future.
Finally, the scene in the kitchen with 'dallas' doing that really psychopathic dance was just way too uncomfortable.
Neon Lights (2022)
My take.. no one has expressed yet
Everything that supposedly happened at the house was actually mental imagery produced by the therapist (with her ground breaking treatment... as the film shows towards the end with the newspaper clip on the wall). As surely the therapist's new treatment wasnt to actually encourage her patient to "kill" (the word she used at the end) all the people that caused him grief ? Instead kill the memory that hurts you.
The piece of paper he tears up at the end seemed to be a sign that he finally got rid of the demons..... BUT.... then in the car, this proves short lived as he hasnt been fully cured, as "he" reappears in the driving seat.
Otherwise if the murders actually do take place, there are so many anomalies. One example is where the girl is trying to escape from her uncle, she runs downstairs, and sees Kim Coates at the door, and takes fright and runs in the opposite direction... all the while her uncle is chasing her. This implies, all this is taking place in Dana's mind under the supervision of his therapist.
That's my take.
Bad Grandmas (2017)
Enjoyable watch
Dunno why it was panned so much. I watched it twice now and enjoyed it. It wasn't supposed to get you into hysterics' - it wasnt that type of comedy. I enjoyed the plot, and it definitely had a nice flow to it. The actors (esp Pam Grier - still great looking ... and one of my greatest heart throbs of the 70s / 80s) did produced a fine display throughout.
Well worth watching - certainly does not deserve the toffy nosed critics trashing it got.
Copper Bill (2020)
Someone please explain
What was the last 20 mins all about ?
How did everything fall into place for the fake deaf girl to walkaway with what we find out, is her accomplice ?
Dont tell me it was all planned to end this way ?
Did the girl dig the money eventually ? Because if what was the $$s in that wooden box, it was hardly worth the effort... didnt look anywhere near "enough" to paraphrase her answer to the question posed by her accomplice.
Were all these men lured to the ranch just so someone could dig the money ?
Couldnt this faux deaf girl just told her accomplice about "copper hill", dug the money and lived happily ever after ? Why the need to make up such a complex blood thirsty plan to do exactly the same thing.... get the money ?
Nobody (2021)
Magical movie
I loved every second of this wonderful ation packed film. It's one of those action movies which you can relate to, regarding the main characters apparent dosile side... but can only wish you could be what he really is or was - a leathal killing machine against the nasty villains.
All i can say, watch it, it is one of the best action movies i've seen in a long long while.
Holiday Monday (2021)
Potential Story Here
But absolutely let down by the acting. Sheesh.. dont these guys look back at the scenes to see what we see ? The monologues and one liners.... awful timing. The closest likeable character was the nutter wannabe drug baron. As for his body guard.... he should take up acting as Prince William's doppleganger.... as his macho portrayal of tough dude just did not cut.
As for the two main actors.. perlease.... it required a pair who were more like Bodie and Doyle (The Professionals) to make the story look more convincing..... but these two came across as Cannon and Ball in The Boys in Blue.
