Paquita Salas (2016)
Who cares about casting the right actors?
I came across this title while browsing on Netflix, and I was not sure what was going on for the first 5 minutes of the first episode of this series, until it dawned on me! The 29-year old Brays Efe is portraying the lead, a middle aged woman, Paquita Salas, because... because...
Well, you lost me there! I have no idea why on earth the casting director, or whoever was in charge of choosing the actors thought that this was a good idea, and forever ruined a potentially good and funny show.
Don't get me wrong, Efe is not necessarily bad in what he does, it is just that, with his looks, the whole deal is utterly unconvincing.
Isn't the whole point of acting to convince us, the audience, that you are precisely the person you are pretending to be? And if so, how am I ever supposed to get convinced that Efe is a woman?
I live for good surreal comedy, but the fact that a 29-year old male with very little makeup is playing this potentially funny lady just puts me off.
Perhaps if the rest of the characters were mis-casted it would have even made sense, but the other actors are believable and seem to know what they are doing to a T.
I am so sorry Paquita, it's just not working, and I am more than anything disappointed because the dialogues are smart and funny and I was actually ready to like this show, alas, the unreasonable casting.
Mindhunter (2017)
Exciting and original.
In my opinion the best Netflix show so far. I must say that I have always been quite intrigued by TV shows and movies dealing with murders, serial killing and similar type of crime so I have watched a fair share of them. Nowadays amongst so much streaming and TV what I personally find hard to encounter is something that has even the modicum of originality, and suffice it to say Mindhunter brings something new to the table. There is something truly brilliant about the series that from moment one signals someone who knows their work well is involved, so I was not surprised to find out that David Fincher directed 4 of the episode and was an executive producer of season one. The acting and the dialogues are absolutely wonderful. There is such great complexity and growth added to the characters that make you really understand them and their actions. I have always appreciated Jonathan Groff's acting and I think that in this show he is able to fully show his potential, therefore I am really looking forward to seeing where the creators are going to take the character of Holden Ford in season 2. Needless to say that rest of the cast is as good as he is. Both Anna Torv's and Holt McCallany's performances are notable. I am not quite sure how I feel about the character of Holden's girlfriend, portrayed by Hannah Gross, but I do want to see her again. To wrap up. Great acting, amazingly well written, complex and original scrip that finally cuts off what seemed to be a never ending string of copy-pasted FBI-after-a-serial-killer shows.
The Mick (2017)
Finally!
I have to start by stating that I love 'smart', intellectual comedy, and clearly this is not it. Firstly, the problem I have been having lately is that a lot of the today's comedy is actually too dramatic and not as easy to watch as I would like it to be. Secondly, the other, bigger, problem is that a lot of the 'easier' stuff is not so good. The good news is that 'The Mick' is somewhere in between, satisfyingly good and super easy to watch.
I had a really high expectations when I watched the trailer, and I could not wait to watch the pilot, and although I can't say it lived up to the expectations I was genuinely entertained and satisfied it.
The cast is solid, and Kaitlin Olson seems quite good as Mackenzie Murphy, but I might be a bit biased cause I find her incredibly funny and I would watch anything she is in cause I am a huge 'It's always sunny in Philly' fan.
Easy to watch and fun is what this show is, and what I really think is missing on TV, so I vote 'Yay'!
Odd Mom Out (2015)
It's different.
I sort of understand why this show will not appeal to many. It's funny and satirical and although it has all the prerequisites of being, it is not your everyday all American humor. Although the plot is nothing new I think that in a way it is really smart, since it's rich vs. flirty rich, so in its core there is something utterly funny and a source of constant ridicule.
The main character is at first sight annoying, but as we can see half way through the first season we can see that she is more complex then we think, so she seems 'more real' than the rest, but I find that quite interesting and appealing.
Some of the other characters are beyond limits caricatured, so that adds to the comedy element of the show, without leaving you wondering 'why is this happening?.
All in all I really think that everyone who is looking for a pinch of fresh comedy and wants to watch something new, should definitely give this show a go without taking into consideration its (unfair) ratings or the simplicity of the plot.
Mr. Robot (2015)
A Bundle of Potential
I decided to give it a 10 from the very start cause after a long, long while I spent an hour of my life on a pilot that made me feel that there might yet be something new under the sun. I really enjoyed the story, which was quite tense but yet utterly believable. There is so much to explore and dig deep into the story and keep the tension of the viewers, without crossing the border of TV-realism plausibility.
The casting is great. Rami Malek (whom to be honest I have not heard of before, although he seems familiar) is a great choice for the main role. Enough troubled looking and thank God he is not blond, if you know what I mean.
We are face to face with some not so radical ideas anymore about what our world has actually become, and my only fear, for now, is that the plot might turn into: 'Corporations are actually not that bad. Please come and work for us Elliot, you are great'. if it comes to that, it will be such a sad, sad loss of potentially amazing series.
We all see, especially on mainstream TV, a dark and realistic depiction of corporations that is often followed by a change of heart and, 'Look, they are not actually that bad' type of story. Whatever the case will just wait and see what follows.
Looking forward to the second episode, and I'll probably watch the pilot again!
Vantage Point (2008)
same old, same old
If asked to be objective about the film, I must admit that it is not the worst American 'terrorist against' film I have ever seen, but it is pretty bad. When a director tries to cross the limits of a mediocre thriller/action typical Hollywood movie as Pete Travis intended to it is not enough just to rewind backward the story for 10 times! The end is so typically 'Hollywoodish' that it made me feel sorry for the time that I wasted, not watching the film, but expecting something ad least a bit different. The film is awfully full with prejudices and stereotyping that it really makes me seek! The perfect terrorist attack was ruined by the conscience of the most vicious terrorist that killed hundreds of innocent people in the last than 30 minutes. I don't think so! He could just run over the girl, and it would all make sense! But no! The Americans had to win again! It is not about the good or the evil at all! In the end this film is nothing more then a 'hard to believe in' story about an all American hero saving the day(or the American president, whatever)!
Sex and the City (2008)
It's a great movie for those who love fashion and New York!
It's a good movie!
I don't really comment on movies but I feel that I have to defend this one from the unjust that comes from people who were expecting to see... I don't really get what were they really expecting!? The Hours!?
Anywaaaay!!!
For anyone who enjoyed the TV show this is a great finish and I can say for myself that I was really eager to see whats gonna happen to the girls, and I wasn't disappointed at ALL!!!
The director thought that a modern funny New York Cinderella story, is a good sum up of a 6 years of work for one of the greatest TV shows ever made, and I agree! It's romantic and funny all the way! The costumes are just DIVINE!!!! I would just be happy to see all clothes that I saw even if nothing happened in the movie!
There is no real big point in the film, but who cares? Its cute romantic comedy, but far far better then the most that I have seen in my life!
Movies like The Notebook have 8.0 rating on this site, so give me a brake! Everyone who likes the TV show should run to the cinema and not bother about the silly comments and the surprisingly stupid low rating! If you liked the show you will feel the same way about the movie!
Sex and the City rocks!!! It made my day!
