Je8ileui bam (2021)
Way better than I expected.
If possible watch in its original language. English dubbed version does not do it any justice.
9/10
"On the night of the Red Moon, the Red One will be roused from sleep and return to the Black One. When they are reunited, the world will turn into hell." -from the buried scripture.
A disgraced archaeologist awakens a 2500 years old demon eye. Two monks, one young and one veteran will have to stop the demon from becoming whole and unleashing hell on earth.
It is amazing how much content the director managed to show in such a short runtime. The 8th Night is a really well made film. The strength of the film lies in its story and characters. I loved the story, the use of Buddhist legend as a background was awesome. What equally impressed was the two lead characters. They had drama but not overdone. There were some endearing moments which alone makes it worth a watch.
The cinematography is great. The ambience was very creepy. Though there were not as much jump-scare as I hoped. The creepy imagery and background music creates a sinister feel throughout the film. I was surprised to find a twist in the film which was pretty well done.
One of the best horror films I have seen in a while. The character designs are very creepy. There were lots of blood and gore. This is one of those rare horror films that merges mystery, drama and horror really well. I liked the massage about anxiety and agony as well. Recommended.
Superhost (2021)
A short and fun watch.
If you know what you are getting into, it can be a fun watch. The trailer does a good job of showing what to expect.
7/10
Teddy and Claire visits the house of Betty and Lou with the intention of shooting for their travel vlog. They are welcomed by Rebecca who seemed odd at first and downright scary as the time passes.
There are only four person in the film. The low budget feel is very evident. The story is very straight forward but the characters make it a fun watch. There are some sub plots which was okay but I felt that the film could have focused more on our superhost than those silly stuff.
The amount of blood and gore is very low and shows up late in the short runtime of 84min. I would have rated it little lower if not for Rebecca. I really liked her character and was rooting for her. The odd smile, long stare and goofy dialogues made her character oddly likable. Cinematography is good when we are not seeing the footage from the camera. There are few jumpscares here and there but I would not recommend it to someone who is looking for something scary.
Gracie Gillam as Rebecca has done an amazing job. If you liked the Creep(2014) you will like this as well. I liked it very much for the 2nd half. I liked how it ended and the sort of massage it tried to convey.
My Cousin Vinny (1992)
One of the funniest films I have ever seen.
10/10
First 20 minutes in and I am already laughing out loud. An amazing comedy film that hits all the right nodes. I am glad that I decided to watch this.
The story is simple and told in a simple manner. What really worked for me was the laid back way the film was handled. Even something as serious as a murder charge felt like no big deal. The acting was on point by all the cast. Even though it was released in 1992, it does not feel very old.
What an incredible performance by Joe Pesci. It never felt like he was acting. The subtle expressions, the body language and the laid back approach everything about Vinny Gambini felt real. Marisa Tomei as Miss Vito was really good. She was very funny with her little back and forth with Vinny. I can't believe she is Aunt May.
There is something wholesome about the film. It feels shooting. I loved the film and I don't think I have laughed so much to any recent films. Recommended.
The Unholy (2021)
Likable leads, creepy ambience and an interesting story
"Wherever God goes, the unholy follows."
7.5/10
The first half is superb, the second part wobbles to find direction but overall an entertaining film for horror film fans. If you liked the first half of the film check out Evil (2019- ), if you liked the second half of the film checkout Messiah (2020).
This is a story of, Gerry Fenn, a disgraced journalist looking to restore his place in the industry. By sheer luck he finds the story of the century, a deaf-mute girl Alice miraculously recovers in front of his eyes. As Gerry pushes the story of miracle to the world he senses something sinister might be lurking behind the shadows.
The Unholy is a merging of two different films. One tells a horror story another is a mix of different ideas that did not work out very well.
Now I loved the first half, it had all the element of a great horror film. Creepy atmosphere, great acting, fitting soundtrack and some effective jump-scare.
It would have been a great film if it continued in the same direction but the second half took a different direction. It focused on discussion on faith vs. Doubt, god vs. Devil. I found it a bit like the Messiah (2020). The production value dropped a bit in the second half as well.
Over all this is an entertaining film that deserves higher rating than the current... Even though the film has its high and low, it is a must watch for the horror fans. The acting, cinematography and the idea behind the film is solid. The design of Mary worked for the most part. I found it unique and the dialogues were surprisingly mature. I enjoyed it.
Nizhal (2021)
A slow burn thriller
9/10
A judge dealing with PTSD gets to know about a boy who narrated a murder story. Feeling that there might be some connection with the boy's story and his PTSD he investigates the details. The story of the boy turns out to be true but the murder happened more than 20 years ago. The judge decides to find out how the boy knew about the murder.
On paper the story sounds simple but as a film I found the film to be very engaging. The making of the film is superb. I really liked the film.
The background music was awesome and created an amazing soundscape. There was always a tension on the screen as if a screw is being tightened. Story moves along the line of a psychological horror and has a surreal feel to it.
There is a twist towards the end, in fact two twists that really surprised me. The acting was superb by Kunchacko Boban and Nayanthara. Especially Kunchacko Boban , the way he portrayed the subtleties of his character is amazing.
If you are in a mood for a slow burn thriller go for it. It is a mix of thriller, romance, slice of life with a dash of horror. I did not expect to enjoy the film as much as did. Would love to see more films like this.
Krack (2021)
As entertaining as Kick (2009)
Sleek visuals, electrifying bgm and intense performance by Ravi Teja makes it a must watch.
9.5/10
A hot headed(Krack) police takes on a powerful villain(katari) after he kills one of his subordinates.
Krack is for the most part a one man show. Ravi Teja has out done himself. He has showed again why he is called mass maharaj. His body language in the uniform is something else. The action sequences are intense and aesthetically pleasing.
Cinematography is the best part of this film. One of the finest looking films I have ever seen. This film is meant to be watch in a big screen. The colors are crisp, the sets are beautiful and the costumes are perfect.
The background score is electrifying. It fits the film very well. The songs are quite nice. Loved the theme of Katar and Mass biriyani song.
Shruti looks absolutely stunning. Her role was a bit short but she made every moment count. Her dance was full of energy and grace but what stole the show was her action sequence. Wish to see similar role from her in the future.
Katari Krishna(Samuthirakani) is the main antagonist. His character has got lots of screen time and is very well presented. I loved his work as a villain in Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo. He gives a similar yet powerful performance here. There is a group of savage killer that works for Katari. Loved the action sequence by them. The final fight sequence is so worth it.
Krack is a mass action entertrainer that is on par with Temper, Singham, Vikramarkudu and Kick. One of the best films from Telugu industry in recent times. Eagerly waiting for Krack 2.
Geomgaek (2020)
The Man from Nowhere with swords.
"For me, my daughter is the country and everything in it."- Tae-yul
9/10
Tae Yul, once a great swordsman now injured lives in the mountain with his daughter. As his eyes injury is getting worse, the daughter decides to come down from mountain. Somehow she finds herself in the midst of a political plot and gets abducted. Tae Yul now must fight hordes of swordsman and assassins to save her. With his injuries and his past catching up to him can he save his daughter?
A lot has been jam-packed in the short runtime of the film. Story starts peacefully, we get to see the father and daughter in the mountain living peacefully. When they eventually come down from the mountain we get to see the change in political arena as a group of slave traders from Qing Dynasty stirs trouble in the Ming Dynasty. Initially Tae Yul ignores but all hell breaks loose when the daughter gets abducted. This is where the real fun begins. Violent and bloody fights with swords against dozens of villains. There are some flashbacks that indicates that Tae Yul is not as simple as he seems. There are two badass swordsman which stands in Tae Yul's way. Both the boss fights were great.
The film looks great, loved the cinematography. The fight scenes were great. As the film progresses the fights get more intense. The sword fighting choreography is absolutely outstanding and the action sequences are satisfying. What I really liked is the BGM, they added so much to the mood of the film.
Intense, violent and compact. A very satisfying watch. I am surprised how much the director managed to show in such a short run time. It is a fantastic action film. I loved the main leads silent but deadly demeanor. The fights are very satisfying and almost feels like the man from nowhere but with swords. Recommended.
Enen no Shôbôtai (2019)
Coolest anime of 2019
Everything about Fire force is devilishly cool. Cool character design, cool power, cool villains and cool twists. If beautiful animation is your thing, this is a must watch.
9/10
Shinra's family died in a strange fire accident and he got special fire power. 12 years later Shinra joins Special Fire Force Company 8 to become a hero and save others.
The story is based in a post war Tokyo Empire where fire and spontaneous combustion is common. People turns into fire monster and starts attacking blindly. Only force to stop them is the Fire force as most of the fire force staff have some kind of cool fire super power. The story revolves around Shinra and other members of Special Fire Force Company 8. Most of the characters introduced here are well designed and very likable. Each has a unique power which is gorgeously animated. While Shinra goes on with trying to be a hero there is a group of people who are one the move to destroy the Tokyo Empire.
The animation is fantastic. The fight scenes are elaborately choreographed and the animation during the fights are out of this world. This has the best sound design of 2019. Every time Shinra uses his signature move there is this boom like sound which just makes the attack almost 3 dimensional. Voice acting is very well done and fitting to the characters. Loved the story and with second season the story got even better.
For any action anime fans this is a must watch. Season one started with a bang. Amazing character design, breath taking action sequences, out of the world OST and an interesting story with one of the coolest bunch of villains I have seen in a while. Season two takes it all up a notch. What I truly loved about Fire force is how fun it is to watch. This is the best shonen to come after Black clover. Recommended.
Akudama Drive (2020)
Suicide Squad the anime
Watch only if you like Anime in general. Though it has great visuals and interesting story Akudama drive is filled with regular anime tropes.
9/10
The story starts simply with the recruitment of criminals (known as Akudama) for a mission. The mission involves rescuing a killer and attacking the police station. As the Akudamas attack the police station, a normal girl gets involved with the fight between the police and the Akudamas.
We see the story unfold through the eyes of the swindler, a normal girl who accidently got involved with the Akudamas. The journey of the swindler and her development as a character is one core part of the story. All seven Akudamas are wildly entertaining, each has such a unique character design and a distinctive persona. I liked some more than the others.
The animation is gorgeous and a feast for the eyes. The fight scenes are so well made. I loved the action scenes and there are a lot of it. The story becomes compelling as the episode progresses and there are one or two twist that one might not see coming. Akudama drive do not shy away from violence. There are lot of bloods and bodies. And few characters do die in the fight. On the negative side one of the protagonists has thick plot armor and after the first 7 episodes the story do drag a bit but the finale is worth going through those episodes.
This is one of the best anime of 2020. Akudama drive is entertaining from the first episode. The first 6 episodes are a blast. The artwork is absolutely pristine, the action scenes are gorgeous. Mind-blowing action, cool artwork and bright color is a feast for the eyes. What truly sets Akudama drive apart is its entertainment value. Recommended for action anime fans.
Laxmii (2020)
The film offers great performance with a heart touching story
9/10
Criminally underrated. This film improves so much upon the source (Muni 2).
Akshay and Kiara goes to Kiara's home for the first time after they eloped to get married. Akshay's awkward attempt to melt the father in laws heart just becomes a little more difficult as he gets possessed by a vengeful ghost.
The acting by Akshay Kumar is electric, the comedy is great without being vulgar and has lots of references that a regular Bollywood film viewers would appreciate. Kiara Advani looks her best. She is like a doll in the film. The lady playing Kiara's mom (Ayesha Raza) is amazing, her comic timing is incredible. Sharad Kelkar just nails his role.
One of the best if not the best of India's horror comedy films. I have watched lots of horror-comedy and I can say that this was done with lots of heart and great professionalism.
Loved the songs, Start Stop song is silly but catchy, Burjkhalifa is a good dance number but Bambholle oh my god what a song! Since its release I have heard the song over 100 times, love it.
Anyone who has not yet made up their mind by uncalled for negative reviews give it a shot. If it was rated with no prejudice it would have around 7.5 out of 10. The film offers great performance with a heart touching story.
Hubie Halloween (2020)
I had a smile on my face throughout the film
9/10
Such a wholesome film. It left a warm, fuzzy feeling in my heart. If you are looking for a good laugh and nothing too serious, go for it.
Hubie is a looser by everyone's standard who is a scaredy pants and does goofy things. But his mother and certain person knows that Hubie is the kindest person in Salem, the unofficial capital of Halloween. Every Halloween Hubie works to maintain safety standards in Salem and every year the town's people pull pranks on him. But this year the danger is real. Will Hubie be able to save the Halloween?
The story is simple and is told in a simple manner. The cinematography is great. The film looks good. Production value is great too. And the acting is top notch. All the characters are likable even the mean ones.
The best part of Hubie Halloween (2020) is the comedy. I had a smile on my face throughout the film. There are lots of laugh out loud moments. It is a feel good film and I felt incredible after watching the film. As long as you know what you are getting into this is an incredibly rewarding watch.
Wu Shan Wu Xing (2020)
Anime of the year
10/10
This came into my radar out of nowhere. But within first 5min of the first episode I knew this was going to be a fantastic show. In terms of action this is the best anime I have seen this year. Fog Hill of Five Elements offers smooth animation of One Punch Man, coolness of Afro Samurai, comedy of Kung Fu Panda and Zen like art of Mushishi.
Long ago The Sacred Shrouded Mountain was home of many vicious monsters. To save the human five powerful Aspects appeared. They harnessed the five elements of Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. They sealed the demons and saved the humanity. The story follows the journey of fire wilder Xuan as he finds himself between a fight of demons and humans.
The action is the best aspect of Fog hill of five elements. I have not seen such amazing fight choreography and animation since One Punch Man (2015). It is a visual treat. Some moments in the fight is just extraordinary. There are plenty of fight scenes to enjoy and each fight is unique and beautifully animated.
The design of the characters were awesome. Every central character looked unique. I loved the art style. The sound effects in the fight were great. One of the thing I liked was the comedy, especially in the first episode. I hope there will be more comedy scenes in the coming episodes.
This is an original Chinese anime but it far surpasses some of the best Japanese anime. So far three episodes have been released. Probably there will be total of 8 episodes. I am looking forward to see more of it. This is a must watch for anyone who likes action anime.
Byomkesh (2017)
True to the books and very entertaining.
I will recommend this to anyone wanting to dip their toes into the Byomkesh world. One does not need any prior knowledge of Byomkesh. The way this show is presented is very simple. One story per episode and as of this moment there is total of 11 episodes containing 8 stories. This is the best presentation of Sharadindu's Byomkesh in my opinion.
Just like who is the best bond, there is a debate as to who is the best Byomkesh? I have no qualms about it. Only thing I know is that Anirban Bhattacharya's acting was excellent. The best thing about his Byomkesh is that he looks very human. Just like us only a bit smarter. Other cast members were excellent as well. Subrat Dutta as Ajit and Ridhima Ghosh as Satyabati was superb. The sound design was excellent neither too much nor too little, just perfect for the suspense to build. The production value is high and consistent throughout the seasons.
I really enjoyed Byomkesh (2017- ). The story was presented in a simple manner. The runtime being short, there was no room for extra masala. It felt almost like reading a book but in a more entertaining manner. The pacing was excellent, no boring moments. This show is excellent for people who has not yet read or seen much of Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay's Byomkesh.
Lego DC Shazam!: Magic and Monsters (2020)
Fun way to spend 80mins
"The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them."- Shazam
9/10
The humor and the Shazam character is the highlight of LEGO DC: Shazam - Magic & Monsters (2020). Loved the feel good tone and silly humor. Recommended if you are looking for some light-hearted comedy film.
Shazam is invited by the Justice League to join their team but he is reluctant to reveal his true identity to them. In the meantime Monster Society traps Justice League. And it is up to Batman and Shazam to stop the evil Monster Society and save the day.
The animation was good. It maintains the same quality as the other DC Lego Animated Movies. The effects were great. I liked the character designs as well. I did however found the Background music to be a bit annoying.
I really liked the film. I liked the humor. It was a fun way to spend 80mins. The plot was simple and the characters were likable. I loved the segment where Batman and Shazam teams up. If you liked The Lego Batman Movie (2017) or Scoob! (2020) give this a go.
V (2020)
Great acting by Nani overshadows the shortcomings in other departments.
8.5/10
A police officer is killed. By leaving a note on the dead body the killer (Nani) challenges an emerging super cop (Sudheer). As the investigation starts the killer calls Sudheer and reveals that he will kill four more people unless he stops him. Will Sudheer be able to catch the killer and find the reason behind the murder?
V (2020) looks good. The cinematography is amazing. The set, props, locations, costumes all are top notch. The action were superb. I loved the killing styles. And the Look of Nani is superb.
There are few negatives in V (2020) but it's worth sitting through them. The first half drags a bit. The force romance between Sudheer and Nivetha Thomas was distracting.
If you like revenge films you will love this. If are a fan of Nani than it's a must watch because he has outdone himself. If you liked Gentleman (2016) you will love this one as well. Don't get dishearten by sluggish first half, it gets considerably better as the time progresses. I loved the climax. A satisfying watch. Recommended.
Vajrakaya (2015)
Entertaining action, family drama
"I'm determined like Lord Ram, powerful as Lord Hanuman.....l'm Vajrakaya who has come to shake the mountain."
9/10
Vajrakaya is an entertaining film. It offers great action and some decent comedy scenes. The film plays with the idea of loving your mother like a goddess. The story is in the same vein of S/O Satyamurthy (2015), Mirchi (2013), Atharintiki Daaredi (2013). Anyone who liked these titles will love this one as well.
Viraj (Shiva Rajkumar) is living a good life with his well to do family. He is a devoted son to his parents and an ideal elder brother to his two siblings. By a random incident he gets to know that this is not his real family and his biological mother is still alive. Hero decides to meet his biological mother. He sets out on a journey to a place much like the mythological Lanka to free his mom from his grandfather who is like a Ravana in that village. Will this Bajrang bhakt be able to meet his mother?
The film utilizes Shiva Rajkumar's fame fully. There are many references to his previous film and stardom. Shiva Rajkumar shines in action and drama scenes. Most of the cast did wonderful job as well. The one playing the Huzoor was excellent. Nabha Natesh was great in her role.
The action was really well done. The fight before the interval was superb. Shiva showed great energy both in action and dance. I liked the songs. The first half was decent but the second half was the highlight of the film for me. I like this type of films that blend good story with lots of over the top action. Recommended if you S/O Satyamurthy (2015), Mirchi (2013), Atharintiki Daaredi (2013).
Yaga. Koshmar tyomnogo lesa (2020)
This film is much better than the low score suggests
7.5/10
Once upon a time there was a witch who lived at the border of our world and the world of the dead. She used to abduct children by sending her faithful servants the Navs, merciless half-birds, half-humans. The Navs lured the children to the witch's den where she devoured their souls. Parents forgot their children as if they had never existed. But one boy with a pure and bright soul managed to defeat the witch and imprisoned her in the world of the dead. However, the witch didn't give up. She began to look for someone who could help her get back. Someone whose pure soul would become darker than night, who can cross the borders of the worlds. Someone who has already been dead once. Time passed, and the memories of that witch remained only in fairy tales. People call her... Baba Yaga.
This is the story of a boy named Egor who is not too happy with his stepmom and dearly misses his deceased mother. He has an infant little step sister Varya. To look after Varya the family hires a nanny. Strange things starts to occur with the arrival of the new nanny. Soon Varya is abducted and everyone except Egor forgets about her existence. Now Egor with his new friends must find out what is happening and bring his little sister home.
I saw this in English dubbing. I am sure if I could have watched it in its original language, the experience would have been even better. That said the acting of all the cast involved was above average, especially from the lead actors and actresses. Marta Timofeeva stands out in her small screen time. Almost all the cast were really good looking. And the film itself looks really pretty. The cinematography is well done. The set design was really cool too.
The film takes a lot from Stephen King's film adaptions (IT, The Shining). I could spot at least four of Stephen King's works. It almost felt like a homage to the author. Even though the scenes were not original they were really well done. The film sort of plays with the idea of holding onto our memories even when forgetting is easier. I liked this aspect very much.
Horror fans please do not miss out on this one on account of low rating. The film has strong beginning and end. Though in the middle it drags a bit, the ending makes up for it. There were some effective jump scares. Both the witch and the Navs looked good and unique. Baba Yaga Terror of the Dark Forest is a mixed bag with mostly good parts.
Host (2020)
What a fantastic horror film.
9/10
Six friends hire a medium to hold a seance via Zoom. One of the friends unintentionally sends an open invitation to the astral plane and something evil accepts her invitation.
Very short run time. The story actually starts 10min into the film and those first 10min can be fast forwarded. The story is simple. The acting is very good but what stands out is the scariness of the film. There were multiple times I had to cover my eyes partially with an anticipation of a jump scare. The only negative is that one character handled the camera poorly that could have been easily avoided.
If you don't mind shaky camera work or jump scares this will be a wonderful experience. I am so glad I gave Host (2020) a chance. I cannot recall the last time I had this much fun with a horror film. A truly scary film.
Baaghi 3 (2020)
Superb action film
8/10
Tiger Shroff's biggest rebellion yet. This time he rebels against a nation. 'Log rishto mein hadein paar karte hain, mera ek aisa rishta tha, jiske liye maine sarhadein paar kardi (People cross limits for their relationships, I had one such relationship for which I crossed borders)' this line was enough for me to get interested in the movie. I watched it with my family and we had a great time.
Riteish and Tiger are brothers. Whenever Riteish gets in trouble Tiger always helps him. After Riteish becomes a police officer Tiger helps him to clean up the criminals while Riteish gets the credit. This attention from both media and other officers brings the brothers face to face with a Terrorist.
Jackie Shroff had little screen time, he did an excellent job with those odd few minutes. The supporting cast did an excellent job. Tiger has done his best acting yet on this one. He showed bigger screen presence and seemed more comfortable in his role. He has come a long way in terms of acting. I liked the chemistry between Tiger and Riteish. They looked very cute and loveable.
The dialogues are surprisingly catchy. Songs are catchy as well. I loved the get ready to fight reloaded. This is the best version of get ready to fight yet.
The Action is the biggest positive of Baaghi 3. I loved Baaghi 2 for the action scenes but my god they took it to the next level in Baaghi 3. The first fight outside a Cineplex was superb and they topped it in the next fight at IPL's lair. Very few movies this year from Bollywood can compete with Baaghi 3 in terms of action. The fist fights in the first half was out of this world. The last fight scene does drag but even that had its moments.
There is not much in terms of story but the action scenes make up for that. I loved the first half. Thanks to excellent cinematography Baaghi 3 is very pleasing to the eye. Recommended if you liked Baaghi 2.
Betaal (2020)
Recommended if you liked Ghoul (2018)
9/10
Plot: Baaz squad is called in the Nilja village. The Squad is supposed to relocate the local tribe so that the development work can start. There they face challenges as the tribal people claim that the land is cursed and if they open the tunnel the curse of Betaal will be unleashed upon them. The squad does as they are ordered and forcefully relocates the tribal people and opens up the collapsed tunnel. Rest of the story is how they deal with the curse of the Betaal.
Betaal (2020) offers great cinematography. I loved the dark and moody environment. It feels similar to the Ghoul (2018) which I liked. The set design was great, the statue and mask, the design of alter all were done really well. The background music was effective.
What I loved most about Betaal is the inner dynamics of the people. The squad commander who is compromised. Vikram Sirohi who overlooks the moral and legal misdealing's of his commander. Ahu who has strong moral but her love for Vikram makes her complacent. The brothers who holds their desire over the team, duty or nation. These little dramas between the characters made the watch interesting.
Episode 1 is the best of the 4 episodes. Betaal starts strong and does drag towards the end. The story of Vikram and Betaal is a famous one I liked what the creator of Betaal did with it. I liked the ending. I understand if someone hates it. For me the ending was powerful. I did not see it coming. Very short and unique show. Would love to see more from the same team.
Satellite Shankar (2019)
Decent feel good film to watch with the family
8/10
Shankar (Sooraj Pancholi) and two fellow soilders ask for leave but is denied. In the same night after a bullet exchange with the enemy Shankar is slightly injured. He is asked to rest for 8 days which he as a sick leave to see his ill mother. Two soldiers that did not get leave asks him to visit their home as well to get some stuff done.
This is the premise of the film. The film has lots of similarity with Bajrangi Bhaijaan. It felt like a combination of Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Heroes. Our hero who is known as Satellite Shankar not only goes to the homes of his fellow soldiers but with his unique perspective he helps improve their lives as well. First part of the film consists of him going around helping people and second part is lots of people coming together to help him without him realizing that he is being helped.
Cinematography felt bit uninspired. But the acting was great by all involved. Sooraj Pancholi was good in his role of kindhearted soldier. Megha Akash did not have much screen time but did great in her role. There were some great acting by the actors who played the family members of the soldiers.
This is a decent feel good film. A good choice to see with the family. It promotes kindness, patriotism, humanity and unity. There were few heartwarming scenes. In some parts it does get cheesy but overall it's a good film.
The Grudge (2019)
A really well made horror film
The rating is low so was my expectation. I like horror films and this is a really well made horror film.
Detective Muldoon (Andrea Riseborough) goes to a house out of curiosity which is infamous for being a place of multiple gruesome murders. There she encounters a bizarre phenomenon. Soon she gets to know that the house is cursed and whomever enters the house is destined to die. Rest of the story is Detective Muldoon's journey to find how she can save herself and her son from the curse of the house.
The film begins in Tokyo 2004. Where Fiona Landers supposedly gets cursed and brings that curse to Pennsylvania. Much like the original we get to see what happens to the Landers family, the Spencer family and the Matheson family in a nonlinear fashion but it feels less confusing than the original. We follow our detective (who very level headed) as she goes over the case files of the previous victims and we get to see what happened to them.
One of the things that stands out from the beginning is the cinematography. It looks good. The Ju-On series is really creepy but it was never easy on the eyes. The atmosphere is creepy in this film as well. The trash bag breathing scene in the first min was superb. The scary scenes are really well done. The ghosts are creepy and grotesque.
There are lots of blood and gore. There are lots of jump scares. I liked most of them. One actually got me, did not see that one coming. The background music is fitting. The acting is good. Some well know faces are there. John Cho, Lin Shaye , Demián Bichir were great in their roles.
There are lots of hate in the review section for this one. And most of the hate for changing the story line. I liked this one because of the changes in the story line. The leading characters are all likable. Andrea Riseborough as Detective Muldoon did an excellent job. It is very rare to have likable characters in a horror film. I liked the chemistry between mother and son.
The film had kind of IT (2017) vibe going on. This sort of feels like a marriage between IT and The Grudge. Which is a good thing. The scary scenes were on a par with The Conjuring series. I loved the ending. There are so many things to like about The Grudge(2020). Recommend for any fans of horror genre.
Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior (2020)
Thundering dialogue and fiery music makes for an entertaining watch
I disliked the trailer and had no plan to see it but ended up giving it a shot. This is a very easy watch thanks to the smooth pacing, nice voice over narration, fiery bgm and well written dialogue.
The film starts with a brief description of the characters and their role in the story. After that the whole film revolves around Tanhaji Malusare (Ajay Devgn) and Udaybhan Singh Rathod (Saif Ali Khan) as they go against each other over the Kondhana Fort.
Dialogues are one of the strengths of Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior. The dialogues are well written. The film is more enjoyable if one knows the spoken language. The English subtitle does not packs the same punch. Also background music is used well. I like the song Ghamand kar a lot. Other songs were nice as well. There were some cool moments that were amazing to see.
I feel kind of let down because the material had so much potential yet the director failed to capitalize that. I want to compare this film to films like Kesari and Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy. Tanhaji looks cheap compared to these two. Kesari had heart and also portrayed the importance of the fort they fought for. Tanhaji fails to convey the massage as to why Kondhana fort was so important. Just saying a few lines is not enough we need to feel it. Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy had more fleshed out characters and amazing visuals. While Tanhaji has almost same story as Sye Raa, the characters are very one dimensional. I recommend Kesari and Sye Raa Narasimha over Tanhaji.
The color grading is horrible. This is the worst film I have ever seen in terms of color grading. Who ever made the call of popping the red and white made the wrong call. They looked terrible and night scenes was horrendous. Overuse of CGI and cheap set did not help the already bad look. The film looks cheap and feels like a stage drama.
The acting was good, Saif Ali Khan stood out with his exceptional performance. I am liking him more and more in his negative roles. Would have loved to see more of Kajol. Supporting cast did a great job.
I liked it. The story was good, pacing was smooth, action was good reminded me of the film 300. The film has a likable protagonist and a worthy antagonist. I recommend it for its entertainment value.
Dabangg 3 (2019)
Better than Dabangg and Dabangg 2
7 Years after Dabangg 2 we get the third installment of an amazing film series. One of the things that I loved about this film is that it stays true to its predecessors. Anyone who liked Dabangg or Dabangg 2 will love this one.
9/10
Like the last two films this one starts with Pandey Ji stopping a crime in progress. Some goons have robbed a wedding and are now in their hideout counting the money. Enters Inspector Chulbul Pandey. This time he comes from underground. This is an action-comedy film and first half an hour is filled with both action and comedy. The film shifts its tone once Pandey ji finds out that the boss of the human trafficking gang he caught (Sudeep) is someone he had a run in with in the past. There we get a flash back of Pandey ji's younger days before he became a cop.
This is a treat for Dabangg film fans because a lot of care has been given to the scenes of the flashback. We get to see how innocent Pandey ji becomes badass Robinhood Pandey. How he picks up his style also the legendary dialogues of Chedi Singh and "Swagat nahi karoge hamara!" As a young Pandey, Salman Khan portrays an innocent persona that is akin to his character in Bodyguard.
The making is good. Prabhu Deva did an excellent job of maintaining the original feel of Dabangg and Dabangg 2 while elevating the look and feel. The locations are amazing. Costume is great. The music and dance is colorful, full of energy and fitting. Salman Khan showed superb energy on the dance floor.
There is no complaint on the acting department, everyone did their part well. Salman khan as young Pandey did an excellent job. The new girl Saiee Manjrekar played her role well. Would have loved to see more of Sonakshi Sinha.
The best of part of Dabangg series is it's "hatke" dialogue and Dabangg 3 has it in truckload. From retelling the old ones to delivering new ones Dabangg 3 packs quite a few memorable dialogue. Another thing that is better than Dabangg and Dabangg 2 is the entry of Salman Khan is more effective in Dabangg 3. Almost all of his entry was mass.
The music is catchy. Action is well made, the earlier action scenes had dose of comedy and gradually the fights got serious till the explosive climax fight. I loved the climax action scenes. It had some really cool scenes. It was also bloody like Dabangg (2010). Dabangg 3 improves on the last two of the series and provides an entertaining action-comedy ride. Must watch for who liked Dabangg and Dabangg 2.
Yip Man 4 (2019)
Wing Chun vs Karate
Emotional finale of an epic film Series.
9/10
Donnie Yen was born to play this character. As Ip Man he always looked calm like a river. In the 4th installment of this epic series the river gets calmer. There is a lot going on in Ip Man's life. He is diagnosed with cancer. He is worried about his son's future so when an opportunity came his way he goes to America to find a school for his son. Life gives another lemon and Ip Man finds it hard to get a letter of recommendation from the head of CBA without which the school will not take his as a student. Mean while Scott Adkins makes it his personal mission to show that Karate is better than any other form of hand to hand combat technique.
The film starts slow. The time period is portrayed well. Ip Man is in his 70s but looks like he is in his 50s at best. The story takes place in America. The first fight we get to see is between Bruce lee and some white martial arts students and that was a feast for the eyes. There were few scenes that showed extreme racism and some bullying. I almost thought that this might end up being a dull film but I was wrong. As soon as Ip Man takes the stage the film became awesome.
There were two major fight by the grandmaster Ip Man. In both fights he looked almost like a super hero. His fight looked more powerful than that of his previous showdowns. As if he was releasing all his pent up emotions with each punch. He was more aggressive and I loved it. He sort of sweeps the floor with one of his opponent who at that point of the story deserved it.
I do not know about historical inaccuracies but as as a film Ip Man series is amazing. Ip Man 4 is a fitting finale. I loved it. The fights were awesome. The back ground music was just right and acting by all the lead was amazing. I wish the film was a bit longer.
