God's Pocket (2014)
Small story, with some original plots twists
Yes, God's Pocket is not the best or the most original film of 2014. The film is well acted but sort of bland. But after thinking about it I realized it had some very original plot twists. Tripping over your son's dead body (dressed in a suit) in a darkened alley behind the funeral home in the rain because you bet the farm with the burial funds(VERY Original). Granny blowing away one very large very violent capo and one mafia solder while protecting grandpa. A large labor foreman beating two very large mafia solders with his bare hands not so believable. The film is well acted; some really good characters; small film; small slice of life in God's Pocket. ciao>>angelo
Dynamite (1929)
Rich girl living a fast but empty life finds herself
This film was way too long! The art deco sets were fabulous. A scene where they were pouring tea from this exquisite tea pot into this fantastic cup made me envious.
(I coveted that tea pot.) The costumes were great.(One scene at a country club the black and white costumes were eye popping.) The plot has some excellent twists and turns. I liked the death row marriage. But on the whole the movie is not a very believable melodrama.(You can' have everything.) The coal mine cave in was GREAT.(This was a wonderful action scene and it made the whole film worth watching.) I loved Kay Johnson performance very much.(Small world story: three days ago I looked up her son James Cromwell on IMDb.)

Incendies (2010)
reading of a will leads to long & winding odyssey into unknown worlds
this film is not for the faint of heart. the film contains a great deal violence. this is NOT make believe movie violence. this REAL fear inducing violence.
the back drop of the film is the Lebanese civil war & its sectarian divisions. The opening sequence, the reading of a will, contains burial instructions, instructions that will haunt me the rest of my life.
the acting is great: very real. the script is exceptional: very believable. great use of sound. great plotting.
I love films that take me from my safe world & thrust me into worlds that I don't know & fear.
I am very disappointed that this film did not win the Academy Award for best foreign language film.
this film was VERY deserving of the award.
La victoire en chantant (1976)
world war one in colonial a African backwater. inhabited by many great characters
this film lead me on a odyssey: to see as many films of the former colonial masters views of themselves. none of the other films reached the level of brilliance of Black, White in Color.
the sheer madness of a rag tag ARMY marching to destruction, followed by the racially "superior" colonist being carried in their SEDAN chairs can only be equaled by SPRING TIME FOR Hitler via the Producers. the writers create many great characters and many moments of hilarity follow. some of my favorite moments: the priest"s servant on his Muslim pray rug praying with a Christian cross dangling from his neck. the priests again, being carried in their SEDAN chairs while being throughly mocked by their porters.
the last scenes, with the french consoling the Germans over their loss and the two young strategists comparing notes, self assured of their superiority, can world war two be far?
