In the world of great remakes (like Cobra Kai), this is an amateur try. Despite of a wonderful cast that gathers some former cult names of the martial arts movie world like Kurt McKinney, Matthias Hues, Cinthia Rothrock and Billy Blanks - all of them playing together should be kind of a sensation -the movie seems pale. Don´t get me wrong: The original Bloodsport also has some less professional scenes (like the backflashes to Frank Dux´past), but is a lot more epic. It´s also obvious how incredibly handsome, elegant and charismatic JCVD was in such a movie. Mathis Landwehr is a fit an sympathetic, probably very skilled fighter, but seems quite unimportant in comparence. This may also be due to the films budget, which is less than Bloodsport had 30 years ago. Most of it probably was used for the actors, so there wasn´t much left for the script (big mistake!), camera and locations. Probably culty to watch for some, but a "fan-movie" that will be forgotten quickls.
Out after episode three. I'm simply sick of the (in my eyes outdated) Netflix-recipé, that keeps the audience motivated by a scheme of constant depression and unfulfilment. Maybe this works if you need to strech a movie to a whole series, but I would definitly prefer good writing and good ideas. This does not mean the series is bad. It gives some insight in MMA-training, the actors are okay (except some sideroles that don't seem convincing to me), it is well filmed and orchestrated. However, despite of some victories the overall vibe is depressing and negative. I don't want this and I also dont't think this is healthy for the audience.
Good cast okay but not very innovative story and doesn't work for me. This series uses the classic in my eyes outdated recipe of unfulfilled desires, despair not talking about important things etcetera to keep you watching. In one word: Negativity. I watched it, but I did not enjoy it and realistically I am tired of watching toxic series like that. This does not mean all series now have to be like Ted Lasso, Cobra Kai or One Piece, but those are certainly more intelligent and manage to keep you watching with positivity, joy and also fascination and tension because of good stories. The Boyz also does it differently and although this is also a kind of negative and incredibly cruel and groce series, it does things much more innovatively. Supacell is an average try to bring a new side to the superhero topic.
