Lo (2009)
fascinating
What a fascinating movie. That's really the best way to describe it: fascinating. There is something about Lo that is strangely intriguing. It's hard to explain. The plot is very simply. A young man named Justin is in love with a woman who is unexpectedly taken away by a demon. Justin summons a different Demon by the name of Lo in hopes of getting his girl back. This plot develops into a complex but very intriguing narrative with great acting and costumes, despite it's low budget. (The whole film takes place in one room). It's hard to explain, but there was something about Lo that I really loved. I guess it's the way that this movie really cared about it's characters. The characters were deep and well written. Really great movie.
American Son (2008)
Ambitious and excellent
American Son is an extraordinary work of art. It tells the story of a young man named Mike (played by Nick Cannon.) Mike has joined the marines. He is fresh out of boot camp and is going to be deployed to Iraq in 96 hours. He gets to spend 96 hours with his family and friends, but nobody knows that he's shipping out to Iraq and he's afraid of telling them. This is a thought provoking, sad, emotional, fascinating movie. There are many other adjectives that I could add, but you get what I'm saying. The story is great. The pacing is great. the performances are all around fantastic. The characters are well rounded and likable. What's not to love?
The Take (2007)
What a surprise
I got bored several months ago and I saw that this movie was in the instant section, so I watched it. I had never heard of the movie, but I did like the cast. Wow. What an incredible movie. This is a rather slow paced, low budget indie movie directed by Brad Furman (who recently directed the Lincoln Lawyer, another excellent movie). The film tells the story of Felix De le Pena, an armored truck driver who gets shot in the head by a criminal named Adell Baldwin during a robbery. The film revolves around Felix's recovery and the investigation of the robbery. Bobby Carnavale plays a cop investigating the crime, while Rosie Perez plays the wife of Felix. The film ends with an intense and exciting climatic scene. I loved this movie. I thought it was very well made and well executed.
