This movie ends a first part of the Jan Bucquoy's cinematographic career. Camping Cosmos is in fact the second and the last traditional movie directed by the Belgian director, chief of the "irregulars" Belgian directors. Traditional means spectacular, filmed with 35mm camera, with a technical crew, based on a film script and with a traditional production and distribution system. T hat is the second production of the period called by Bucquoy himself of "temporary integration" in the classical movie system. Bucquoy makes all the possible to provoke the laughter, that's why Camping Cosmos is a very funny comedy, full of citations of the surrealist and "situationnist" culture, full of amazing situations. Also the happy end takes place in this movie! How make a "popular" and intellectual movie? How talk about the Belgian culture to the Belgians? How talk about revolution in early eighties? That's the challenge of Bucquoy who keep on tailing the adventures of his favourite character: Jan Bucquoy. The protagonist of his first movie. Adult and divorced he is now the cultural director of a camping on the Belgian coast trying to learn to the holidaymakers the principal arguments of his counterculture. His daughter's arrival in the camping give him once again the chance to think about his life and dreams. A summer on the Belgian coast, a trip in the Belgian culture. An original portrait of many different universal characters. Really funny.
Fermeture de l'usine Renault à Vilvoorde. Third movie of the sexual life of Belgians, this guerrilla documentary carry on whit the demolition of spectacular cinema. Jan Bucquoy makes a series of aesthetic choices that gives him the possibility of making a movie without the classical cinema system. You will not have a photography director, a cast, a 35mm camera, a film, and a film script! Whit his handle DV-CAM, Bucquoy offers to the editing all the expression responsibility and expands the representation in documentation without forgiving the power of his personal artistic expression. In this way this movie is a corrosive political pamphlet, which pulls spectators in the middle of the new economical order's disaster. The shooting down of a factory, another defeat of the international (global) working class, is the occasion to think about the contemporary work system based on the exploitation of human resources. Is it possible to change it? Don't we deserve something else, such as a life and not simply a job? How say NO to the cynicism of the upper class and his top managers? If Michael Moore whit Roger and me (1989) showed that it was necessary to make these questions, Jan Bucquoy try to give an answer. The sexual life of Belgians is a new life in which strikes and sit-in are not enough. A brand new day starts by a consciousness, ridiculous, satisfactory rebellion. Do you desire to know why in the end of the movie workers make a party whir champagne and caviar? Just see this Belgian movie!
First movie of the belgian conceptual artist and disrespectful director Jan Bucquoy. This film starts the series of the sexual life of the belgians, composed by 4 full-lenght films that introduce subversion in belgian cinema history, also whit an independent production system. You'll not find any explicit sexual sequence, you'll find the representation of a complex ideological system, the history of a non conventional life, the alternative vision of a country that hide aspirations of general revolution of life. Bucquoy build a conceptual cinema that try to destroy the "representation" of the spectacular cinema in order to leave all the place to the ideas. The word "sexual" hides the words "politics","art", "desire", "communication"... it hides all words to reveal the language free by all social deviation. This first movie show 28 years of the life of a man who try to find the best answer to the only really important philosophical question, as the french writer Camus wrote: is it worth living life or not? From his little village in Flandre to Bruxelles, trough sexual relationships, political activism, literature dreams, you will see the existential journey of Jan Bucquoy (the name of the protagonist) who try to grow in the body and in the intellect.
