The Bear (2022)
Meh
I watched every episode of S1 and S2. I don't have problems with swearing and anxiety-inducing frenetic pacing, those qualities probably kept me watching. I found it very one-dimensional in its reliance on the repetitive emotional torturing of the main characters. Jeremy Allen White being the slack-jawed recipient of the torture apparently deserves an acting award, however, I am more impressed by the performance of Ebon Moss-Bachrach (but I suppose that would only get a lowly supporting actor nod so they put the campaigning into the lead). I am a huge fan of dark dark comedy but I didn't find any type of comedy here. It could really use some comedy to break up the unrelenting torture, but I respect the choice. You definitely start to feel what the characters feel and that is no small feat in filmmaking. Unfortunately, that feeling is all it delivers.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Those Old Scientists (2023)
Instant cult classic!
Before this one, the pirate episode was my favorite of the series. My murderous feline enjoys the Gorn episodes, she watches every bloody minute and ignores all other episodes. There is something for everyone in SNW, including the fans that have seen every episode of every series. Many references are slight and can be ignored if you haven't seen the other shows. Not so much with this episode. I strongly recommend watching a few episodes of Lower Decks to get to know the characters before watching this episode. I watch Lower Decks very casually, a few episodes are great but I mostly appreciate the broader range of personality explored on the show. SNW has not been shy to embrace the humorous so a crossover episode is a perfect fit.
This episode takes the best of both series and takes them each up to 11.
The first thing I said after finishing this episode was: I'd watch that in a theater at midnight a few times!
The Fall (2006)
Universally appealing masterpiece
Don't believe all the reviews saying it is weird or hard to understand! This is a wonderful portrayal of the human condition everyone can find meaning in.
I was expecting borderline avant garde.
I found it gorgeous, magical, emotional, whimsical at times and devastating at times.
The scope of the filming locations alone is monumental, truly amazing it was ever finished and released, quite an epic accomplishment. If it ever gets released on 4K I will add it to my collection without a moments hesitation.
For those having a hard time finding it I got it on Blu-ray from my state's library network (MN, USA)
House of Games (1987)
Clichéd, predictable, I lost brain cells watching this
I find myself wondering if I watched the same movie as the glowing reviewers. I liked the end and I tried to come up with a 'Usual Suspects' type conspiracy that the entire movie was a con against the audience which would have redeemed it for me. However, I failed to come up with anything believable just like Mamet failed in this endeavor.
Maybe the reviewers touting the snappy dialogue watched it back in 1987? Was all movie dialogue worse in that era? Painfully slow witted predictable dialogue and events.
As the ending started I became excited for the first time by the story. Now it's getting good! I popped up the time and was crestfallen to discover there was less than 15 minutes left including the credits.
If you want sit through the mind numbing majority of this movie for an only a tiny bit of quality in the last few minutes go for it. A few people enjoy it therefore our viewing party had a lively discussion (especially because I was advocating for the con against the audience which was ultimately proven impossible). Any movie that prompts that much discussion is fun but that is not going to get another star out of me.
TL:DR 1/10 movie 10/10 after movie discussion: if you are masochist enough to watch this don't watch alone.
Amy Schumer: Live at the Apollo (2015)
Classic Amy
If you like Amy, you will enjoy this show. She sticks to her usual topics. My guy and I were laughing out loud throughout the show.
