Choose or Die (2022)
Enjoyable film
I'm not sure why this film has such a low rating. It was pretty well written and acted. There was a great jump scare (I don't normally get affected by jump scares and I even let out a little yell) and the ending was reasonably clever.
It was just the right length and I'm not sure why some people are saying it was too long. Eddie Marsan and Asa Butterfield were both great and while I initially found Iola Evans annoying she grew on me and by the end I was cheering for her.
Maybe I had low expectations going in because of the low rating and this helped me enjoy the film more. It's certainly not winning any prizes but it's definitely worth your time if you like horror/thrillers.
Station 19 (2018)
Love it
Breaking news - this is not a documentary. For anyone looking for a highly realistic show about firefighters or paramedics, police or doctors, this is not the show for you. This is a show designed to entertain not inform. It is a spin off from Grey's Anatomy so you're looking at the same level of melodrama that has kept that show on air for 13 years.
I have thoroughly enjoyed every episode of the first season. I have loved the charater development and the interactions between the characters. I wonder if some people have an issue with this show because it features so many strong female characters and they feel uncomfortable with the concept that women are people too and highly capable of doing the same jobs as men. Sometimes they even do that while other women also occupy positions in the same department. Shocking, I know.
If you're looking for something not too serious to entertain you then this is a good option. While I wouldn't take it too seriously it does touch on a few important issues and there's a few tearjerker moments. Can't wait for season 2.
The Caretaker (2012)
A beautiful piece of Australian Cinema
While there is no denying that Vampires play a central role in this movie, I would challenge its pigeonholing as a genre film. Underneath the gore and fangs and horror is a simple story about humanity and survival. Each of the characters is unlikeable yet fragile, likable yet horrifying, showing us the complexity of human nature and human relationships. The actors and filmmakers did a wonderful job of bringing these characters to life and imbuing them with a sense of reality, as opposed to the sometimes stereotypical caricatures that often find their way into these type of films. On top of that the filmic style and colour palette used by the filmmakers gives the film a beautiful, rich visual feel.
One of my favourite Australian films to date, I hope it gets the recognition it deserves!
Snowtown (2011)
Gritty Confronting Cinema
First of all let me say that this movie is absolutely not for everyone. If you are the kind of person who uses cinema as a means of escape, likes movies that are feel good and fun, a person who only enjoys big budget movies with explosions, clearly defined goodies and baddies and a hero who triumphs, this movie is definitely not for you. If you are someone who likes everything spelled out for you, doesn't like to have to think for themselves, doesn't like movies that seek to make you understand the confusion, isolation and emotions of the characters, then this movie's not for you either.
This is cinema that will stay with you long after the credits have rolled. This is cinema without any gloss or polish or sparkle. It is an amazing portrayal of some of the most inhuman people that have ever lived and the vile acts they committed. While the filmmakers use some particularly vicious, brutal and shocking scenes in some places, the majority of the violence that takes place happens off screen and is merely insinuated. There is no one to cheer for, only characters to try and understand and in some cases attempt to have empathy for.
Snowtown shows us a world few of us will ever see, but one that does indeed, sadly exist. For those reviewers who claim the reactions and behaviors of the characters are unrealistic I challenge your notion of realism for these are circumstances that could only be judged from within them, none of us knows what the normal human reaction would be in these circumstances as the majority of us will never have to endure them.
Keep an open mind, be prepared to be disgusted and horrified, understand that this film doesn't seek to provide all the answers and maybe you will be able to come as close to "enjoying" this film as is possible for a movie with such unenjoyable themes.
