Terrifier 2 (2022)
Everything I hoped for...
People will always complain but this was exactly what I wanted. Super gory, awesome kills, love the new final girl, etc. Bring on #3. Damien Leone is a genius.
Art the Clown might just be my favorite slasher. I know... that's too much praise but I love his wicked humor. Never make him a joke like Freddy please.
If Damien reads this, just keep doing you and ignore the haters out there. Excited to see where this goes. I like the hints at the deeper story. My only minor complaint: I wish this one had boobs like the first. Seeing this in the theater with a ton of horror fiends was like a religious experience.
Bakemono (2023)
If you like Hellraiser or The Thing...
I think you'll like this. It's not perfect and it's out of order but I had no problem following it. The practical effects are incredible and I love Mitsuo. He's so creepy. It is a bit dark at times but it's very atmospheric. I actually jumped too. Again it's not perfect and it is an indie film but I was surprised how good it was.
I thought the characters were also well developed. There are quite a few of them but that makes it different from most other films. I liked the Irish guy. I figured he was the lead actually since he was crying over his ex, handsome, fit, etc. I guess I can see why some might be confused but I think if you pay attention, it isn't difficult.
Contagion (2010)
I quite liked this...
Great practical effects and nudity so this won me over. It's true the characters could be better especially the lead guy but for having such a miniscule budget, the effects are incredible. There are also a ton of them throughout the movie.
I think if you watch a lot of indie horror, you can appreciate this. If you expect something on the level of The Thing or The Blob, obviously they don't have anywhere near that budget or time so you should realize that going in.
I'm a big fan of Victoria De Mare after Werewolf in a Womens Prison so I was happy to see her in this. I wish they would make a sequel to this or more movies like it.
The Breach (2022)
I was hoping for a lot more...
There are some kind of cool practical effects but they're shown in bright light and the digital enhancement is not good. It reminded me very much of From Beyond but with a drastically lower budget.
Some monsters near the end just kind of seem like zombies stumbling around outside, which is disappointing. The idea isn't bad but as a horror fan, I really want a lot more practical effects and the lighting is rather flat.
You can see elements of The Fly in there too but it's not really unique enough on its own. The pacing is a tad slow too although I was entertained enough. The ending was great. I probably wouldn't watch it again though.
Black Mold (2023)
Not so bad really...
Clearly, they didn't have much money although the effects are pretty good. I just got a little annoyed with the characters just staying in the awful place with the mold and with the dangerous guy when they could easily walk somewhere else or at least breathe fresh air outside. Maybe if they couldn't exit the building so easily or if they established that people exposed to black mold don't have the common sense to get away from it then I could accept their actions more easily. I was hoping there would be transforming or some kind of unique monster but it's more just a drama with some tension. I was pretty engaged though.
Cobweb (2023)
A little slow but engaging
I think you can see the twist coming but it's still well done and it is quite foreboding. Happy to see Homelander in this. The effects are good too. Sometimes, a little too much cgi but still pretty dang good.
I like the build-up and the mystery. The kid isn't annoying, which is nice. I get tired of kids in movies sometimes. Seeing the story through his eyes though makes it more interesting.
The jump scares worked for the most part especially that creepy nightmare. I wish there were more kills but what we get is good. It's like a fantasy horror film really so don't expect strict realism or anything.
The Blackening (2022)
Very funny and clever
I laughed a lot and I liked the cast. It was smarter than I expected. Good social commentary too. I didn't predict the killer either.
Maybe it could have had better kills but I genuinely cared about the characters, which is more important and I was never bored. Sure people will probably find something to complain about with this but I think if you like horror comedies, you'll dig this.
The last good horror comedy I saw was Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. This ranks up there with that in my opinion and you could tell they had a good budget. I'm usually not real big on horror comedies either but this won me over.
The Greatest Horror Film Ever Made (2020)
Hilarious awesome genre sendup!
Really loved this! It's so funny and doesn't take itself seriously at all. Very inventive unique kills and some nice nudity too! Fantastic writing! Can't wait to see what this filmmaker does next!
Sea Fever (2019)
Boring and predictable
It's basically a dull Alien ripoff but without a great monster, lifeless forgettable characters, etc. If you've seen the original Alien or any of the knockoffs, you've seen this a million times. The ending is interesting but getting there is tough. The stakes never feel real. The danger doesn't feel immediate. It isn't exciting. You can easily read what will happen far in advance so you're just sitting there, watching it go through all too familiar beats. It's like Harbinger Down but both are pretty weak imitations of better films. Sorry I was really hoping this would be good.
