Classified (2024)
Classified as Terrible
A plotline that's been done many times before and with far greater success. Classified zigzags from ridiculous to wooden without warning. The abject quality of the dialogue is only matched by its delivery, and in the movies dullest and cringiest moments, you can almost see Aaron Eckhart thinking that he hopes the cheque clears. Nothing about this movie is believable, from the backstory to relationships between the main characters. Poor casting, poor dialogue and poor audience. I would say this movie is bottom of the barrel, but that would imply that it's contained in some way. Looking at previous work from the director and the main actors I am surprised that any of them even signed up for this. If you literally have nothing else to do, and that includes going to the dentist or housework, then watch this movie.
3 Body Problem (2024)
Great Adaption for a Western Audience
When I read that Netflix had acquired the rights and were going to be making 3 Body Problem, I was concerned at exactly how this would be accomplished considering how massive in scope and complexity the books are. I have read all three books, and all I can say is bravo. They have managed to bring it across to an English audience, simplify the science and render some of the incredibly tricky scenes and ideas onto the television screen in a slick and sublime way. Sure, they've split and converted some of the characters to different nationalities and sexes, but that was obviously going to happen, and it would be naive to expect the showrunners to do a page-by-page adaptation. Without spoiling anything, I was stunned at how well the Panama Canal scene was handled and I am now absolutely confident that we will be blown away by future seasons. If you have read the books and wondered how they can possibly adapt what is going to happen into something that will work for television, then hopefully Season 1 has addressed some of those concerns. It has for me, and I cannot wait for Season 2.
Real Steel (2011)
Stupid concept that works surprisingly well
When I first read about this movie whilst it was in production my immediate thoughts were of ridicule and schmaltz.
I take it all back. This movie succeeds because the two main actors overlay their emotions and personalities onto the main robot character Atom. You actually forget that it(he) is a machine.
Dakoto Goyo already has an impressive amount of work under his belt for a 12 year old. He definitely has the potential to be a big star.
It's like Rocky for robots. If at the end of this movie you are not cheering for this piece of machinery then you have no soul.
Looking forward to the sequel.
The Tree of Life (2011)
I was mesmerised but probably will never watch it again
I was genuinely mesmerised by the scenes where the family interacted.
I liked the pseudo National Geographic segment in the beginning, but if the goal was to show the grandeur of the universe and the journey to the present then it probably could have been improved upon. I also don't think the over amplified opera music that accompanied it was necessary.
There are people who think about the centre of the universe, and then there are people who think they are the centre of the universe. It is more likely that people from the first category will enjoy this movie than those from the latter.
Unstoppable (2010)
Ridiculous - Who's in Charge Around Here!!!
I will make this short and sweet, which is exactly what the movie could have been if anyone with half a brain had been in charge of stopping this train.
The acting and direction were adequate, and the movie was not a complete waste of time, but it was just absolutely ridiculous that the train could not be stopped sooner. *Minor Spoiler* There is a scene about 40 minutes in, were they attempt to stop the train by putting a moving train in front of the runaway train and to gently try and bring the speed of the runaway train down by using the brakes of the front train. Now this seems sensible if it weren't for the man dangling from a helicopter who will be lowered onto the roof of the train when the speed drops below 40 miles per hour...HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! If the front train and the runaway train are touching each other then you could literally walk across from the one train to the other. A 1 year old could have crawled between the 2 trains. There are so many shots of the 2 trains touching that I lost a lot of respect for the movie after this. It was a completely over engineered rescue just for the sake of suspense. My grandmother and I could have stopped this train...and that's with my grandmother doing all her own stunts.
The Man from Earth (2007)
Great Idea, Terrible Production
I am unfortunately torn on this movie. If we are to rate this movie on its production values it would get a 1 out of 10. The acting isn't very good despite the appearance of a few well known B (probably C) listers. Furthermore the direction is poor. The dialogue is also a little forced, but this may have something to do with the editing. I had the feeling that if the actors would have worked for a percentage of the profits, I probably could have shot this movie myself using an old home video camera in 2 days, for about 10 dollars.
If however I was to rate this movie on the concept I would have to give it an 8 (or 9) out of 10. It was really the only thing that made me want to keep on watching.
I'm probably being a little harsh but I just feel that with a little more production savvy it could have been an amazing movie.
