M.O.M.: Mothers of Monsters (2020)
Too Slow
I kept hearing good things about this movie. So I gave it a chance on Tubi. My expectations were low because it's on Tubi so it might not be good. It was better than expected but the run time is too long and I kept checking to see how much time was left in the film.
The first half focuses on the mom who believes her teen son is a psychopath and tries to film evidence of this. The son could be regarded as one due to his somewhat violent behavior and speech but that could also be because of the mental illness he clearly has and none of his meds actually helping him. The guy who played the son was a good actor as I really hated him.
The mom is definitely paranoid even if her hunch is right. She can't discern if her son is taking her for a ride or is serious.
The storyline gets better in the second half where we see the son's true disposition. However the idea of filming her son and just gathering it, not for police, but for other moms seems a bit unrealistic.
The dream and drawings were a tad confusing making me think that the writers wanted to go a supernatural route but kinda quit halfway through.
It's a decent 6/10, I would give it 7 but the music chosen was so bad I had to turn it down to mute and just read the subtitles and turn it up when it was gone. Otherwise give it a watch, it seems to be hit or miss for most people.
The Retreat (2020)
Great Psych Horror
I thought this film was gonna be bad cuz of the reviews but man people are just very critical. I came in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised.
I'm so glad. The creature really scared me, something I feel does not happen often anymore cuz I love watching a lot of horror.
The story is about two friends going on a hiking trip for a bachelor "party" because one friend is getting married. They end up staying at a shared air bnb and meet another friendly hiker and the host who has a lot of framed creepy creatures on the wall. He then goes on to explain about the legend of the wendigo. I suggest you go learn what a wendigo is first to really grasp this film. Sometimes slow but I think worth the watch.
Sex and the City 2 (2010)
Watchable But It Should Not Be Canon
Sex and the City was a great film so what happened in Sex and the City 2?
*Spoilers*
This film is not true to Carrie, Aiden, nor Samantha. It is for Miranda and Charlotte though.
The first part of the film feels more Sex and the City than the latter (when they go to the middle east).
Charlotte's worry over the nanny is realistic and when her and Miranda have a 1 on 1 at the bar it felt very real and true for friends to talk deeply about their lives concerning motherhood.
Samantha is over sexualized (yes this happened). Going to the middle east was a vacation but it was also business for Samantha so her behavior there was out of character. She would NEVER jeopardize work with her sexual temptations. She knew how to separate work and sex like a professional but she is wanting sex so much that she uses sexual innuendos so much in an unprofessional manner with her business colleagues that it is cringy (especially since her sex drive is very low anyway). It was disappointing to see Samantha as unlikable. The only good parts with Samantha is towards the end right after Carrie and Aiden had dinner. Perfect Samantha you're back!
Carrie's problem with Big is so childish it's very unrealistic. She worried so much about Big's feelings after the incident in the first film that she threw it out the window when they're married.
Here is where she meets up with Aiden (which what are the odds) in the middle east and his character is so cringy and disgusting I think they forgot that Aiden was loyal to his wife, has kids, and is happily married. This Aiden is like a dark twisted version of him that I cannot even grasp. He was the good guy in the series, the perfect guy, the romantic... now he is a creep who breaks vows. I just don't think this Aiden is real and Carrie's behavior with him is appalling. From what we see with her and Big I had no idea she hated their coupling so much she'd do that to him...
It's a terrible plot for Carrie and Big to add that into the mixture and personally it feels unrealistic that they'd even get back together afterwards. Carrie in this film is basically where "once a cheater always a cheater" comes from. If I were Big I'd run but because Big is so in love with her (who knows why) he decides to give her s ring to 'remind' her that she's taken.
When Carrie asks why the diamond is black I laughed when she thought it was because of her soul. I was disappointed when Big said it was because she was unique but we all know it's because of her soul.
Even Carrie is self aware that she is a bad wife and a nag with a black soul. That's the only accurate thing in this film. It's only watchable for Charlotte and Miranda.
Carrie is such a bad friend in this film she went back to a crappy character. She uses Samantha to get her into a premiere Big doesn't even want to go to and she tells Charlotte in a mean way she's crazy. Miranda's actions and behavior in the film is what saves it. She's fun, happy, true to her character and has even learned that telling Carrie she's being stupid won't stop her from doing stupid things as Charlotte takes on that role. It was a vacation for Miranda and she deserved it.
Sex and the City (2008)
True to the Characters
I felt Sex and the City was very true to their characters. In fact Carrie is surprisingly better as a character in the film than in the series.
*Spoiler if you have not seen the film*
Big and Carrie's problem felt real and anxious especially for Big. Carrie's overreaction is also very real.
There is a huge part where Carrie goes into a deep depression that I felt was very accurate behavior with what she went through. Typical Carrie from the series reacts horribly to Miranda in a Valentine's Day scene but she goes back to that better character later.
Miranda and Steve's problem is realistic and getting help in figuring out if they can (and are willing) to move on was one one of the most beautiful scenes.
Samantha's problems with Smith was so tragically beautiful because she goes through her own mild depression and is loyal to Smith even when temptation occurs. She is also feels like she'd make a great mother when she cared for Carrie.
Overall I really enjoy this film and love rewatching it. Only reason it's not a 10 is because it's not perfect.
The Women (2008)
This Movie Is Awful - Don't Watch If You Respect Yourself as a Female
So many female stereotypes! Ugh. Please don't even bother watching this movie. Just because it has an all female cast does NOT mean it's a female empowering film... it's far from it. It gave me a headache.
There are a few scenes I just hate. The whole film is full of gossip of each other.. I get when people gossip about strangers, but friends gossiping about friends? Not cool...
Going to the perfume store ugh.. to confront the woman "stealing" their friend's husband... uhm hello? You confront your good for nothing cheating husband, not girl number 2! That's like saying it's not your husband's fault because it's always the woman's fault... STOP with that... it takes two to tango... (i know she gets divorced later but still).
I don't know... maybe this is how high society females are... no wonder we love making fun of these air heads... but it's not enjoyable like Legally Blonde.. in fact it's not even a comedy... or is it? It did NOT feel like one otherwise I could let this all go...
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)
Never saw any of The Lord of the Rings films - Saw The Hobbit - Liked it
I am not a big fan of The Lord of the Rings films simply because they are just way too long... I'm sure the films are great, but I tried watching the second one and I ended up falling asleep.
I went to see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey because my best friend wanted to see it premiere night and as her best friend I came with her.
Initially I thought it would be long and boring, nothing interesting. However, I was corrected. The movie was very interesting to watch, the landscapes are beautiful, the characters are likable, and the dialogue (the screen writing) I thought was incredibly well done. There is a point in the film that I felt was a little boring (I don't want to spoil it so you'll see what I mean when you go watch it). However, the dull bits are saved by the amount of action that's put in the film, which I found very amusing. One bit in the film I felt was a waste of film time, it ties in with the dull bit, but again I won't say because you have to watch it.
So if you are a fan of the trilogy, then I say you will very much enjoy it. If you're not a big fan, prepare for a long long movie that might interest you, but might put you off because of the long talking dull bits.
It's a good movie.
Tang shan da di zhen (2010)
Great movie - Title has a meaning
At first when I saw that the title of the movie was "Aftershocks" I expected a whole end of the world sci-fi earthquake movie where there were continual aftershocks throughout the film.
This is not the case, in fact this is far from it. I was unaware of such a tragedy befalling in China (I looked it up later). This is how the film starts, with a big earthquake, buildings crashing down everywhere, the earth splitting and people running for their lives. It was a very sad point in the film and it is here where a mother has to decide to save her son or daughter from the wreckage. How can a mother decide such a thing? I initially thought that the mother favored one child over the other but you know she would die for both of them. She loved her children very much and ended up picking her son to save and at that moment she was plagued for the rest of her life the guilt of not saving both of them.
The story goes on to show that the daughter did survive and was adopted by a family from the army. She grew up sweet and kind and always praised for her beauty, her brother grew up smart and rich. Both had different lives and the story never gets boring. It's always interesting.
The film title is something I hated before, but now I feel that it does have a great meaning. Aftershocks can signify the earthquake that changed these people's lives, but it also symbolizes the great trouble the mother, the daughter, and the son go through in their daily lives.
It is indeed a sad, and beautiful story, especially towards the end, though I do not wish to spoil that. Go see it.
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012)
CGI is nice, acting and plot not so much
Ah sequels... usually not the best, but there are a select few that can handle it (Dark Knight, Toy Story etc). This movie is not one of those select few.
I did not see it in theaters and I am very glad I didn't. This would have been a waste of money. The characters are boring, Dwayne is not a good actor... he's not. The boy, I thought was alright, Vanessa Hudgens, when I saw her, I knew right away it wouldn't be a good movie. She's not a very good actress.
This movie will only be enjoyed if you have nothing else to do, extremely bored and there's nothing else to watch. The CGI in the film is beautiful I will admit, but it just does NOT go with the real people... it looks too fake. Honestly I think it would have more potential, but the acting, silly scenes, and fake CGI did not work. Dialogue is terrible too. If maybe the whole movie was in CGI it would have worked, and different voice overs, then maybe it would have been better.
I don't understand the need to skimpify Vanessa Hudgens for a kids film either... what were they thinking? I am also tired of the whole, girl hates boy at first, then loves him at the very end. Very unrealistic. Come on, movie was okay, i can watch it again... or half-watch it really. The only character that made it slightly amusing was the overly-dramatic-comic relief Vanessa's daddy.
OVERALL - GOOD FOR KIDS
Tape 407 (2012)
It was alright
I see a lot of negative reviews for this film and for that I did not take this film seriously at all, but because of this I actually found that the film is likable and watchable. I liked that it was different. The characters weren't THAT annoying and you do end up hating one of them, which is good. My only problem with this film is the camera. I don't care that it's shaking so much, but when every other character is looking off screen and the camera is looking (too close up) at each character's face... come on... that is annoying. Realistically, the camera would look off screen as well to see what the hell everyone else is looking at right? I never understood this and that is the only thing that really bugged me. Other than that, I liked the film, wasn't as bad as everyone said. Not the best. Watch it like a youtube video, entertaining, kills time, low budget.
It was alright.
Silent House (2011)
Boring Start - Interesting Finish
I personally did not care for the beginning and my friends and I were really hating on the female lead for some time. Until towards the end when all is revealed, my friend and I felt that it was quite clever. I give this movie a 7 out of 10, solely based on that ending. I will not reveal anything, but if you want to see an interesting ending, please watch this film. Give it a chance.
You may hate it in the beginning, but it's not that bad once the ending occurs.
It's not as bad as people say it is.
The only spoiler is that it's not a paranormal film.
Hadashi no Gen (1983)
A tragic story about the before, during, and aftermath of the Hiroshima bombing
I will admit that I did not like the style of animation that was going on, but the characters were so charming that I wanted to see what happened next. I knew already that this movie was about the Hiroshima bombing, but when they showed the bombing in action, it was so tragic, I teared up and felt so sad for the women, the men, and especially the children and babies that had to endure such suffering. It is quite detailed, it shocked me as to how detailed it was considering the animation. The deaths of the father, daughter, and youngest son was also very tragic and shocking. You'd think "they're not going to die, they're going to live and somehow find a way to survive all this" - but sadly this was not the case. The mother's reaction to their deaths seemed quite realistic and disturbing, but she was able to snap out of it for her son's sake. The birth of the daughter was sweet and brought back a smile on my face, making me think "there it is, the hope we all want to see" but her death too was very sad and tragic. The movie isn't too long, but the amount of time spent with Gen makes you like him more and more throughout the film.
This movie is very much recommended for those who are interested in the Hiroshima bombing and the aftermath. This is not a kids film.
Chernobyl Diaries (2012)
A group of tourists decide to go on an extreme tour to Chernobyl but become stranded
I personally found this movie enjoyable. I haven't seen a film in awhile that would scare me. It takes a lot to scare me when it comes to horror and this is great. This movie, though predictable, is worth watching if you're a horror fan. The film, in my opinion, reminded me of Cloverfield (the use of hand held camera in the beginning) and The Hills Have Eyes (which I disliked)(the mutants looked similar to the cannibals). I think those who disliked Hills Have Eyes should watch this film. It's more of a jump at the loud sounds kind of movie. It's suspenseful and it is eerie and it did spark an interest to look up what really happened in Chernobyl (I have never heard of it before this movie). Not a lot of gore and they don't really show the mutants, there were two parts that creeped me out - the bit where she finds the strange creature in one of her pictures and where they see the little girl with her back against them. There are some things in the film that wasn't explained - how did she even notice the creature in the camera? -Why were the mutants being experimented on? - Were the mutants eating the people? If not what happened to the rest of the tourists? It is a movie worth watching for a good scare. I do agree with others that there isn't a lot of character development, however I did feel sad for Paul in the end when he gets shot by the military. I only wish they showed more of the mutants. (Notice that they never run) - that was odd in my opinion. The movie overall was really good, the special effects and background is great. There's no bad CG either, yay. I like this movie a lot and I think you should see it, but be warned, don't go if you're looking for something that will make you go into deep thought, this is not the film. Looking for a good scare? Here's your film. Enjoy the movie.
