Spencer's first forage into television was his June 1983 appearance on Good Morning America, where he was interviewed by Frank Gifford about his interest in the U.S. Space Program. Referred to the television program by Director of Shuttle Operations Robert Crippen, Spencer had the opportunity to tell his story about his desire to be "the first male juvenile in space".

After returning home from his Good Morning America appearance and watching the video, Spencer became so appalled at his southern drawl and overall speech that he undertook speech therapy to overcome his accent. After serving in the Army and returning to work in healthcare in the Western U.S., Spencer began performing voice-over work for radio, first for the hospitals where he worked, and then for local and regional companies.

Spencer is married to Coryee Hamons and has made most of his career as a Healthcare Chief Information Officer and Chief Operating Officer, then working as a consultant and strategic advisor in the tech industry. Spencer is an Instrument Rated Private Pilot and flies around with his family in a Piper Saratoga, Spencer grew up in Porter, Texas, had lived in Montgomery and Kingwood, TX, Alamosa. / La Jara, Colorado, Bethel, Alaska, Angel Fire, New Mexico, and Lake Tenkiller, Oklahoma. Spencer’s son, Andrew Hamons, is also a pilot and graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in Aerospace Engineering in 2022.
