The School for Good and Evil (2022)
I will watch a sequel
Didn't know the series was based on a book, but I can see that. I'm a sucker for fairy tales and this film was enough to fill the void. Previously placated with medieval lore, this show the type of teenage fairy tale light hearted drama that can easily wile away the two hours by keeping me immersed and entertained. My true rating is probably a 6.5. I appreciate the female empowerment in the storyline, the surreal effects (animation, music, costumes and make-up), and the great acting by the senior cast/professors (Charlize Theron and Michelle Yeoh standing out as personal faves!). Sophie's quick and simple manipulation back and forth between standard good and pure evil and the foreseeability of much of the action/beliefs were a bit of a disappointment, but that may stem from the source material more than anything. Overall, I believe it was a solid Netflix production. If a sequel is made, I will surely be tuning in!
I May Destroy You (2020)
How does she do it?
Both the content and the quality of I may destroy you is outstanding. It explores the incredibly complex themes of sexual assault in the modern era. It creates a darkly humorous presentation that allows the watcher to experience these uncomfortable nuances without limiting the act to any strict definition or inciting feelings of offense. An absolute superb and timely show. 10/10.
Cike Wu Liuqi (2018)
So simple. Yet, so fantastic.
Been looking for a new cartoon to watch late night now that I've binged my way through almost every subscription I own, and came across Scissors Seven. Started watching the English dub, not expecting too much, and was pleasantly surprised. At first I thought I was just watching a stereotypical teenage-edgy but fun for all cartoon, but it's so. much. more! Almost Speed Racer meets Shin Chan meets Kill La Kill as assassin's. Got some definite gut laughs out of me. The animation style is classic. Together with the storyline, fight scenes, and deadpan reckless jokes, Scissors Seven made for a fantastic watch! Would highly recommend for adult animation and anime lovers.
Oh Jerome, No (2019)
Too Short
The only problem with Oh, Jerome No, is that the 5 minute episodes are far too short! This surreal comedy project is timely, relatable, and hi-larious! Athie, as the central protagonist facing millennial dating woes, is an absolute sweet treat, and one can see why so many comedy a-listers lent their name to FXXs short. FX generally provides above quality content when it comes to their TV series and this production meets the mold and then some! Would definitely suggest giving it a watch!
The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019)
An Artistic Black Experience
It's wonderful to see a predominantly black movie that features great technical cinimetography skill and artistic direction. Very Wes Anderson-esque. The acting is super, and the storyline and direction gives the watcher the opportunity to experience the often unseen point of view of modern black American life. I highly recommend giving it a watch!
Marianne (2019)
If If Nightmare on Elm Street took a modern day vacation to the french countryside...
You would get this show. There's deff a lot of questions to be asked at the end. This could have been a movie. A 6.5 really.
A Black Lady Sketch Show (2019)
A Sketch Comedy for Black Women Millenials
This is a show that's written to speak to black female millennials (23-38 in 2019). It is a smart, feminist, comedy show that touches upon plenty of pop culture topics in a variety of comedic sketches. Plenty of cameos by famous black female actresses straight out of the gate. Honestly, I love it! Far too overdue.
