Lioness (2023)
Worst work from Sherindan but...
I am a huge fan of Taylor Sherindan so consequently I have watched all of his work. Most of them are masterpieces. And here we are with this new one. I think Lioness is the worst work coming from Taylor because of his lack of tensión, script and plot holes.
The series starts strong but soon sinks by itself. I mean, I do not care about watching a female main character, but this looks like more into a soap opera like "La reina del Sur" than Major of Kingstown or Tulsa King. I mean, It is too much annoying to watch several episodes that nothing happens. Except the relationship between all women. I expected more action and less women's empty drama.
Anyway, i will try season 2 to see if something changes, if not, this series It is not for me.
900 Days Without Anabel (2024)
Technically perfect but too long
This documentary is based on a notorious case from the 90's. A teen was kidnapped in a suburban place apparently for no reason.
So, the documentary starts strong but at the end of the second episode, everything feels forced and maybe too long. I mean, the case is disturbing and interesting to follow, but at the end, the series feels too long.
Anyway, if you love similar crime documentaries like "El Caso Asumpta" or "Alcasser" this one is probably for you. I'm Spaniard so I didn't need any subtitles so it was a plus. On the other hand, if you're non native it can be difficult to follow because of the weird accents.
Gladiator (2000)
Watched again 24 years later
I really enjoyed watching Gladiator 24 years ago. So, consequently I have decided to watch again 24 years later. I do not why I have waited too long.
First, the movie has aged pretty well. I can't believe this masterpiece was created almost 25 years ago. Fx's looks great and better than 99% of actual movies.
Second, Russell Crowe here is amazing. Even better than I remembered. What an authentic acting masterclass. Joaquin Phoenix too.
Third, the script is great. The ending marvelous. So you can't expect more from a movie. I mean, this movie is easily in the top 20 from all time.
Anyway, I can't wait to watch Gladiator II and see where the story goes. I recommend this first movie to everyone who truly loves good movies.
The Apprentice (2024)
Jeremy Strong show
After reading some good reviews I was excited about watching a masterpiece about Donald Trump's early days, but I was wrong. This "movie" should be called: Jeremy Strong acting masterclass.
First, Jeremy does a great job from beginning till the end. Amazing characterization and real as life.
Second, his character steals the show. I don't know if it's in purpose, but first hour it's only on him.
So, overall the "movie", doesn't work as Donald Trump biopic or similar, instead feels more like an empty and cliche attempt of creating something similar to the 90% politics life in the 80's.
Anyway, I recommend the movie only for the Jeremy Strong performance. Other than that, just cliche over cliche.
Smile 2 (2024)
Smile, everything will be all right... Or maybe not.
I really enjoyed the original Smile. It was one of my horror favorites from two years ago. So consequently, I was expecting an acceptable sequel. But I was wrong, the sequel is even better (in some aspects) than the original.
First, the cast has been upgraded. I mean, the main actress is far better here. She is so talented and credible. On the other hand, a few others have no background or are so annoying, like the assistant.
Second, the script is good, the twists are great and the ending is at the same great level than the original.
Last, gore, Fx's and sound are excellent too. Not abusing of CGI as many other productions.
So, overall an excellent continuation to enjoy if you're a horror fan or love the first one.
It's What's Inside (2024)
Original sin
From time to time a movie is surprisingly fresh and becomes a great addition to the genre. It's what's inside is risky, twisted, original and overall great.
First, the main idea is the best thing I've watched in a long time. I'm not going to spoil anything saying it's the best movie I've watched in a long time. And believe me, I've watched a lot of unoriginal trash.
Second, the cast is great. They do a great job on their roles.
Third, the music and the camera work are superb. Even the almost 120 minutes, the movie is interesting from beginning till the end.
So, overall if you want something different, original and overall fresh, choose this one.
Strange Darling (2023)
And the Oscar goes to...
From time to time there are several overrated movies that people score as masterpieces and critics as trash. I think movies are subject to several points to be an acceptable movie, a good movie or a masterpiece. Then the overrated movies.
First, cinematography here is great, but if you have watched movies, there is nothing new here. The director tried to mix Rob Zombie's style with Tarantino. The result visually talking is excellent but... A movie is not only cinematography.
So, consequently the storyline here is not well developed, it does not work and worst of all, the feeling of this movie is a big missed opportunity. It it supposed to be scary and it's not. It is supposed to be original and it's not.
Anyway I'm not going to keep writing about this one. If you have watched movies like The Devil's Reject, The hills have eyes or Wolf Creek, skip this one. There is no new substance here. Only a big hype from gen Z.
Stream (2024)
Soap opera level
This movie is mediocre, even for a slasher fan. It starts interesting but soon it become extremely predictable.
First, acting here is horrendous. Embarrassing. The creators mixed Scream with some kind of psychotropics, or hallucinogens. The result is bad.
Second, the story is super mega ultra predictable even for a 5 years old. I mean, they use all the cliches from every horror movie. C'mon, at least be brave and original, like Terrifier for example.
Last, gore is the best here. Three stars for them. Decent gory deaths and it doesn't look bad at all. No CGI, so a plus.
So, consequently, if you're debating about gardening or warching this one, go for the green.
MadS (2024)
Cheap french version of 28 days later
I have watched this one because of the good reviews here on IMDb. I really love independent movies like this one. I don't care if the movie comes from Indonesia, France or Australia. There are little treasures everywhere. MadS is a cheap mixture/copy of 28 days later and Martyrs.
First, the movie starts strong including a good cinematography and an interesting nor original beginning.
Second, around 25 minutes later the movie starts to become weird and weird, then extremely predictable even the originality of the shots.
Last, even the movie is technically great for the budget, I have watched this story ten times before.
To add, the storyline is full of plot holes.
Anyway, if you haven't watched any horror movies, this one is for you.
Terrifier 3 (2024)
Still going up
First, If you're a fan of the two original ones, this one is for you. It is bigger, better and stronger. I mean the budget is higher than the two previous ones so consequently the result of gore and fun is better. On the other hand, ending feels pretty weak compared with the movie.
Anyway, nothing is perfect and Terrifier saga still feels fresh and with a great potential for 1-2 more movies. The storyline here doesn't go any further but it looks like the Director Leone knows the best ending for Art the Clown. Probably on Terrifier 4 (confirmed by him). So, overall a great third movie if you're a fan of strong splatter horror.
The Killer's Game (2024)
Do not take it seriously
Do not take the movie seriously and you'll be fine. It's a fun ride including great action testosterone well known actors. I repeat, do not expect an Oscar winning here.
First, action is pretty well done. It is a kind of mixture of John Week with The Raid, or Hitman.
Second, the cast is great. Including great talented B-action heroes like the great Scott Adkins.
Third, I like the Tarantinian style of the killers. I mean, you know what exactly is going to happen with them, but there is a funny characterization of them. Love it.
Last, when I watch this kind of movies I want to have fun and do not think too much. So, consequently, the Killers Game is a win-win to me.
Overall a funny, gory action flick.
Disco, Ibiza, Locomía (2024)
Mixed feelings
I am Spaniard born and raised as a teen in the 80's-90's, the age where a new music band called Locomia was born. They were "different" because of the clothes and performances.
Soon, It was a big hit in Spain and Latin America. Unfortunately, the series only shows the light. The real story is so different than this one. I suggest to read about it after watch it. You'll avoid any spoiler.
First, the movie starts strong but the last 25 minutes felt rushed and not coherent. Looks like producers from Netflix wanted a Netflix ending, you know what I mean. So, consequently it's fiction, and does not be taken as a real story.
Second, music, clothes and Ibiza are pretty well descripted. Nothing to say about that.
Last, it could have been far better as a mini series, expanding the life of the characters till 2024 not only 1996.
Anyway, I recommend this one to people who doesn't know anything about the group and want be entertained 90 minutes. It could be a good starting point to discover "the curse" behind this band.
Blink Twice (2024)
Poor, really poor
I have high expectations for this one. The 6'5 score here was respectful, cast was good and story interesting. But I was wrong.
First, the story is extremely poor and irrational. Second, acting here is soap opera level. I can not believe the best here was the kid of the sixth sense lol.
Third the execution is overall bad, slow and incoherent. There are several plot holes that makes this movie as bad as the ones coming from Uwe Bole.
Last but not least, the ending is as bad as the movie. A joke. A total nonsense and makes you feel like you have been wasting your last 90 minutes.
So, I suggest to do some gardening instead watch this abomination.
The Substance (2024)
Masterpiece
If you love horror-gore thrillers this one is for you. If you're expecting your usual Hollywood script, get out from here. This movie isn't for you.
First, the movie is risky, original, raw and sometimes disgusting, in a good way, even for a man who grew up watching Bad Taste, Evil dead and Nightmare on Elm Street.
Second, my kuddos for Demy and Margaret, both are amazing here. Great talented women, but Margaret is actually the best female actress right now. Watch her in The assistant series. Definitely, she deserves an Emmy's award.
Third, camera work here works pretty good. Fx's are amazing and music too. Nothing to say.
Last, but not least, the script is extremely good. Interesting message. I love this kind of movies. Bravo. One of the 2024 best.
Alien: Romulus (2024)
Thank you Fede Alvarez
I am a big fan of Alien 1979 and Aliens 1986, they're two of my favorites of all time. I have watched them probably more than twenty times in my life. By the way, I grew up in the 80's so I am enough old to compare Alien Romulus with the original ones.
Anyway, first of all thank you Fede Alvarez to make me happy respecting the original story and doing a great job giving us nostalgia from different times.
But maybe, at the same time that's the big mistake here. Sometimes Alien Romulus seems great, different but many times a bad remix of Alien, Aliens and even Prometheus. The problem here is the cast is really bad excepting the Androids. To add, less bullets and blood.
So, consequently Alien Romulus could have been far better but far worse. Fede tries to follow the legacy but it doesn't work overall as a great movie. Everything that happens can be guessed easily from beginning till the end. Too familiar for fans.
Anyway, nothing is perfect and Alien Romulus can be a great introduction for Gen Z, but probably not the favorite for old fans like me. Thank you Fede for the try. Alien Romulus will be my fourth favorite from the Saga. I recommend to watch in this order: Alien, Aliens, Prometheus and Alien Romulus.
MaXXXine (2024)
Triple XXX weak
I really enjoyed the first two movies. But not this one. It could have been far better just with a more clever, risky and ambitious script. So what is the point to do a movie of a death character, if it is not risky?... Anyway, nothing is perfect, but here the imperfections are bigger than anything else.
First, the first 45 minutes are slow, boring and without any substance to add to the original story. Just a few wink wink here and there to the 80's.
Second, the 80's vibe is good but not great. Even they try hard, some scenes are forced and it doesn't fit with that age. I'm from the 80's.
So, overall just a bad conclusion for an interesting trilogy. The movies went from X (8) Maxine (7) and Maxxxine (3).
Trap (2024)
Cool if you're under 13
The movie itself is another M. Nigh fail. Again. Intelligent movies are barely nowadays. This is an example of d@mb movie. Are you serious that Britney Spears can save the world?...
First,Josh Harnett is the only good reason here. That's all. I love him as an actor. Here it tries hard but the script is so weak, bland and full of cliches. Money is the only reason he "acts" here.
Second, there are several unbelievable situations that makes the story as real as the kid of the fifth sense. It's incredible that several rich companies approve to do something as weird as this movie.
Last, I think it could have been better doing a movie that Snoop Dog saves the Fitness world.
Anyway, I don't recommend this abomination to anyone.
Speak No Evil (2024)
Most overrated movie of the year
The movie itself is bad. Really bad. Boring, predictable and d*mb. I don't know how this abomination has a 7 scored here.
First, the plot is weak, the story has no sense and worst of all, great actors look like they're acting in a soap opera. Horrendous.
Second, this is supposed a horror movie, but there's no horror. Just a few d*mb situations that does not scare even a 5 years old.
Last but not least, the movie as a whole does not work. There are a lot of weird scenes, empty plot holes and the most important: it's not original. Everything is predictable at hundred per cent. So, overall the most overrated movie of the year.
Longlegs (2024)
Pretty good but could have been better
First, I don't know how to explain this movie but I'll will try. I've watched thousands of horror movies so consequently there are only a few movie that surprise me. Most of them are only a copy and paste from another one, just changing name, actors or a few scenes. Not this one.
Second, Longlegs is original and accomplish back to basics in horror movies. The good usual mystery/story is here, also the amazing masterclass acting from the cast and an excellent camera work. I love it.
Last, so, is Longlegs a great movie? Yes it is. It is best horror movie? Not, but could have been on top 50.
To add, I can recommend to everyone who wants a solid thriller that contains everything you need to disconnect from this chaotic world. Enjoy.
House of the Dragon: The Queen Who Ever Was (2024)
So much potential wasted
I don't want to compare this series with Game of Thrones, because it's actually one or two steps down of it. The season finale of this second season is weak, feels rushed and not original.
First, there are a lot of empty unacceptable scenes in this season that makes me think if writers are 8 years old boys and girls.
Second, this last episode could have been the second one and continue from there. Overall the season feels flat, with only a few great moments.
Last, I don't understand why House of the Dragon is not more risky. The cast is great. The first season was excellent, so why this overall empty mess?...
So, in conclusion, a big letdown coming from a fantastic first season that has nothing to do with this almost boring , second one.
Shattered (2022)
John Malkovich with Naranjito's track suit?
This B-movie, has an A+ cast. I mean, with a more risky script this could have been faaaaar better, but there are some big letdowns that makes this movie one of the worst I've ever seen.
First and foremost, why John Malkovich wearing a Naranjito's track suit?... Probably you don't know who's Naranjito. Naranjito was the Spaniard world cup mascot in 1982. Yes 1982. I'm Spaniard and 44 and that's why I know that. But, think about it. So freaky!! Lol
Second, Grillo and Malkovich career is going down so fast. Respect for their decisions, but I really love Malkovich. His character here is at least, the worst he has ever played (including Naranjito's sportswear) lol
Third, settings are the best. I really loved it. That's why there is so much potential here. Why not to try to do a new Fargo, or something different?
Instead we have the usual predicatable plot twist, plain characters and a weird ending.
So, overall a really bad movie because of the script. Even acting is bad, coming from reputated cast. Anyway sometimes is better to go for a walk than watch this abomination.
In a Violent Nature (2024)
Friday the 13th the videogame
This movie remembered me to Friday The 13th the videogame. I mean the camera work, the murders and filming locations are pretty close. Probably producers were inspired by Friday the 13th original movie but they've tried to give a new vision. The result is not as good, nor original and the overall product seems too simplistic (even a slasher).
First, the story is inexistent and it's the usual one if you have watched similar slashers.
Second, the overall result is a cheap copy of Friday the 13th (Even 2009 version is better than this one).
Last, the murders are the best here. It doesn't look cheap for a B movie.
So, overall a wasted opportunity with so much potential. I recommend this one only to slashers B-grade fans. Other than that skip. There are other several good classics from the 80's like Nightmare on Elm street, Christine, Halloween or Alien.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)
Pirates of the Caribbean meets AI Mad Max
I don't know where to start, but I'll try. I really love Mad Max and the first trilogy of movies. They have aged pretty well, original one is almost 45 years old, and looks pretty good. The version from 2014 was excellent too. A Tom Hardy's show. Then we have this abomination that has nothing to do with the Mad Max universe. It's a total nonsense.
First and foremost, 95% of the movie is CGI. Are you serious?... You made such a great production in a garage with a green screen?... Everything is fake. Even sand, water... The FX's looked cheap, unrealistic, and annoying. It's like watching a videogame from my 90's VGA PC that tries hard to be real. Maniac Mansion for example.
Moreover, It's an insult to intelligence how most of characters are unlikeable and d*mb. How this terrible thing will look in 40 years?...
Second, story is weak (full of plot holes) acting is horrendous and the characters look more into Pirates of The Caribbean than Mad Max. Why Chris Hemsworth tries to be a cheap version of Jack Sparrow here?... A big letdown.
Anyway, if you love Mad Max saga, skip this one or tell AI to make a Mad Max movie, and you'll get same as Furiosa. A cringe AI version of Mad Max Universe. Now I understand why this movie is a big failure in theaters and domestic even the big budget. Hollywood is dead.
Cangaço Novo (2023)
Amazing Brazilian series
I am a big fan of Brazilian productions like "City of God" or series like "The Mechanism", so consequently I've watched this one without knowing anything about this product. I recommend to not read anything about it to enjoy it the most.
First, the series starts super strong. Best I have watched in a long time. Great cast, amazing production, no cheap CGI and enough blood for fans like me that love series like Gomorrah, Zero Zero Zero or as mention before great Brazilian productions like Tropa De Elite.
Second, the script is great for the first 3/4 of the series but suddenly it becomes super predictable if you have watched similar series. I mean anything is perfect so I understand you get out of ideas and you take this from here and something from there, that is obviously done before.
So, overall the experience is excellent and I'm going to watch season 2. This series is on the way of becoming a masterpiece or get out of ideas and become just another one.
The Gentlemen (2024)
Masterpiece
This series is poetry if you love movies like Lock&Stock, Snatch and The Gentleman. It's Guy Ritchie at it's best. But not only that.
First,to the characters are pretty well developed, unique and deep enough to love of all them even they represent the worst from our society. The hateful or d*mb the character is, the more you love. That's unique here.
Second, camera work, length of episodes and visuals are almost perfect. I really love there is only a few CGI scenes are most of them are old school way of filming mixed with best scenarios.
Last, the story is engaging and I wish for a minimum of two seasons. This one is a masterpiece and at the same time, best British quality television series in 2024.
