Hellraiser (2022)
Could have been good
This reboot manages to take some of the more interesting aesthetic ideas of the first two movies and updates them with very neat makeup effects and well designed sets The whole thing certainly feels much better produced than all the horrible direct to video or streaming sequels but still it doesn't manage to capture the gothic and gritty charm of the first 2 original movies.
The gore is underwhelming compared to the original, if that's what you came to see. There are no epic scenes like Frank regrowing himself out of a drop of blood, no obsessed woman hammering people to death to feed her zombified lover and no bodies being shredded by chains. Except gor s quick one in the dark.
On the other hand, the cenobites look amazing and are quite creative. The new Pinhead convinced me The sexual pleasure aspect of their sadistic religion has been thrown out, again sanitized.
The protagonists are (again) cutout characters. Well played, but uninteresting.
I''ll happily watch a sequel with the same designs and demons, but would really wish for something with way better writing and the courage to test the boundaries as the original did.
The Batman (2022)
Good-looking major bore
The Batman swims in the same stylistic river as The Joker. Everything feels retro, wet and dirty. Taxi Driver, Seven and French Connection vibes, which is interesting.
However, just as I felt with The Joker, this has no reason to exist. Nothing new or interesting we haven´t seen too many times before in the other incarnations. Bruce Wayne is a colorless emo kid running around in a ridiculous outfit, not Batman.
Also it´s quite boring and not much happens.
Eight for Silver (2021)
Well done bore
This one is puzzling. A lot of love went into the wardrobe, scenarios and mood, so you really feel like you´re in the period.
The gore is OK, nothing out of this world like many reviews want to make you believe. The monster looks a bit like the werewolves in "American Werewolf in Paris", so...meh.
The big problem here is that there is no interesting protagonist to follow, so I didn´t care.
And the initial mystery scene about the bullet is just not necessary. There is no mystery or twist to it, so...why?
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
Well meaning, but not enough
Afterlife is well made and structured and reminded me a bit of 80s Spielberg movies like ET. The problem here is that not enough happens, and even the final conflict is simply too small for a Ghostbusters movie. Placing the story on a farm instead of sprawling NYC also doesn't.help.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Neutered version of The Matrix
So there i was expecting at least some interesting and big visuals, and what i got was a tv level hallmark movie about two aging superheroes absurdly underproduced piece of dreck that looks like it it was filmed on a smartphone with no artistic flair whatsoever.
The matrix scenes look like soap opera, the real world scenes look like cheap Star Trek.
It is unbelievable that a sequel to a series that revolutionized scifi visuals does not have one single memorable scene.
You want choreographies? Forget it. You want well filmed action? Nahhhh, not a single one. Cool.sentinels and hardware, maybe? Some superpowers, missions or mistery about what is going on? Nope.
There are a few fights and brawls, but they have no Matrix elements whatsoever, and mostly look like a zombihorde attacking in the dark. Horrible b movie visuals, unbelievable
The editing, cinematography and music all seem like a rushed tv movie, and the grandeur from the original series is not present here.
The only true Matrix here are the countless flashback scenes which only remind us how unimaginative and underproduced this is
In the 90s this would have been a dtv sequel in the dollar bin.
There are scenes of yuppies and nerds discussing the original matrix, reboots and remakes..in the movie itself.
The only story here is Neo and Trinity being the Matrix God together, not just Neo.
You don't need two hours of people talking to achieve that.
This would have been somewhat acceptable as a 20 minute YouTube short. Probably a hint that the director's sibling is the artist in the family.
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)
exceptionally bad
This plays and feels like a weak syfy movie.. boring, ugly, bad dialogues. Closer to rhe game, i guess, but yikes. The milla movies at least were entertaining nonsense. Here..nothing happens.
The Night Comes for Us (2018)
Over-choreographed hyperviolence
Title says it all. The thin story is barely held together by extremely long and violent fight scenes. They stand out for going all the way and being very gory, but get tedious after ten minutes of slaughter.
Jolt (2021)
Silly OK action fun
This won´t change the world in any way, but Kate is as attractive as always and it's silly enough to provide a few chuckles .
Blood Red Sky (2021)
It´s OK
Would have been better without all the horrible dubbing that creates a severe disconnect.
Some good horror and light gore, some drama and decent action. Won´t change your life, but nice on a slow Sunday.
The Forever Purge (2021)
Possibly the best of the series
After what we saw, and continue seeing, happening in the world this one feels like a chillingly real possible scenario.
There is a frightening amount of insane people in this world lusting for a "racewar", and 2016-jan 6 2021 felt a lot like a pre-cursor to what happens in this movie.
I believe the lower ratings here and the reviews complaining about wokeness are precisely from that toxic group of people that would roam the streets in such an event.
And yes, the bearded skinhead was a bit much, I admit. Then again, I have seen such people. It´s very unfortunate that they do exist, indeed.
Now, that being said, as a simple action movie it holds up really well. Forever Purge feels quite a bit like it could be a cheaper more humble Mad Max prequel following a family group through the collapse of society. The action is quick and brutal, the protagonists are well played and the stakes are high. Less of a horror vibe compared to the others and a bit lighter on the gore.
Without the sociopolitical relevance (I never thought I´d apply that term to a Purge movie) this would still be an above average apocalyptic action movie, fully deserving a 7/10.
Underworld: Blood Wars (2016)
Why so dark?
While better than Awakening, something went seriously wrong with the color grading. Some scenes ae so dark you can´t see what´s going on.
The story is much better than the rushed frenetic Awakening, and tries to bring back classic storytelling and expand the world.
A shame. This series could easily have been developed into a Lord Of The Rings style epic, but never managed to exceed b-movie action status.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Timeless classic that changed horror
This and the sequel are the only ones that give us a truly frightening and demented dreamkiller. The sequels went for bombast and fantasy comedy, severely diminishing the antagonist´s effectiveness.
Werewolves Within (2021)
Very soft comedy and little horror
Doesn´t add enough in either department and is not really interesting enough to be a success.
Well filmed and acted, so it still deserves an average rating.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Action and monsters
Nicely acted and filmed. Well done fx, cool monsters and some nice heroism.
Won´t change the world, but does its job.
Freaks (2018)
Quality X-Men rip-off
Well...it´s not Marvel. But this is exactly what I would like to see in an X-Men tv series for adults.
Little actress has a future. Good performance.
Batman: The Long Halloween, Part One (2021)
A bit too boring for my taste
Disclaimer: I´m not the biggest fan of the graphic novel, either. While I applaud the artistic merit of both the book and the animation I simply can´t get into it.
If you are into slooooow you might like this.
Kolskaya sverhglubokaya (2020)
Emotionally stunted people on a mission
Just watch Blomkamp´s Zygote on Youtube instead. Same thing without the filler, and the monster is way creepier.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)
More of the same
Am I the only one thinking that these movies are all cheap and uneventful nonsense?
A Quiet Place Part II (2020)
Good, but not spectacular
There´s a reason sequels tend to desperately dial it up when the initial outing doesn´t have enough meat on it to continue the story.
This movie is just the same with a bit more monster action thrown in. Not a total waste of time, but also not a must see if you have seen the first one.
Loki (2021)
Jean Giraud would be proud
Major Moebius (2 homages in one name lol) is working to correct timeline errors in alternate timelines/worlds, and teams up with Loki to do so.
Good fun with more than a slice of inspiration from Moebius´ "Le Garage Hermetique".
Superman & Lois (2021)
So far, so good
Superman/Clark is a believable and very human person, not the epic god-alien most other incarnations depict him as.
Good fun so far.
Edit: 11 episodes in I bump this up from 7 to an 8. So yeah, quality is consistent.
Evil Dead II (1987)
Just as good as the first one, but different
This remake/sequel has higher production value, less horror and more obvious slapstick comedy.
Another classic of cinema.
Freaky (2020)
Fun slasdher with neat idea
Above average dialogues and comedy moments. Lots of fun.
Jennifer's Body (2009)
It´s the sexiest woman eats people!!!
The sexiest woman is good acting! I like that! She is sexiest and a woman and she knows that and that we like the sexiest and funny haha! I like that too!!!
Watch it in a linear fashion from front to end. I like it that way! Stay sexiest!!
Infinite (2021)
Marky Mark has learned nothing
Boring drivel, yet another highlander rip off dumb bull bad acting boring action made for European tv feel nonsense.
