Bunk'd (2015)
How did this get a 3rd season?
Wow where do I even begin...this show is so bad.
The show has basic kiddie com humor that I'm not mad at, but I AM mad at the godawful characters. Zuri & Emma are the same as they were in Jessie, but their 7 & 13 year old personalities DO NOT belong in their 14 & 20 year old bodies; Ravi, Tiffany & Jorge, are just flat out racist stereotypes; and Lou is the weakest protagonist I've seen on Disney Channel.
There's no consistent plot to the show & the characters never change, so if you've watched 1 episode - you've pretty much watched all of them.
The 3rd season's sudden & unexplained replacement of Tiffany, Jorge & Xander with 3 young children was odd...none of the characters have developed enough for them to just leave like that. The show should've just ended after season 2 if there was problems with some of the cast not wanting to return.
Andi Mack (2017)
What happened?
The 1st season of this show was smart, well paced, and cute; the 2nd season has been cute, but a whole mess in the plotline department.
The main relationship storyline - Jonah & Andi has been painfully dragged out for a whole 2 seasons. The 2 characters constantly backtrack on previous points in the storyline for no reason other than to stir up an 'A' plot worth of drama.
Buffy's plot has taken 3 very sharp turns this season, none of which resulted in any character development...
For Jonah's anxiety storyline, Bowie acts as his therapist while projecting his own problems onto Jonah. While that may be interesting to see, there is NO WAY that the children watching this can understand what projection looks like - making this storyline virtually useless to the target demographic.
Poor Cyrus has been neglected for an entire season, only to show up once every blue moon to remind the audience that he's gay. All he's been doing is supporting Andi and Jonah's relationship from a distance, without ever actually being involved in the storyline.
The only consistent plotlines are those of Bex, Celia, and TJ - despite him only being a recurring character.
Hyperlinked (2017)
MAJOR disconnect
I genuinely want to know if the writers of this show have ever:
1) Taken a coding class.
2) Taken a high school level writing course.
or 3) Met a teenage girl in their life.
Watching this as a teenager within the target audience made me feel like a human watching a show made by aliens pretending to be writers.
but, I'd recommend this show to someone who's trying to learn English because the actors say their lines VERY slowly and clearly, and the language used is relatively basic.
Bizaardvark (2016)
Dumb, Cute, and Funny
Right off the bat, I'm just going to say that making a show about YouTubers was a bad idea. No matter how hard they try to parody or parallel internet culture, it just doesn't translate well on TV.
Looking past that mess, the 2 protagonists, Paige & Frankie are well written and portrayed. It's SO rare for a kiddie com to have consistently developing characters, so I applaud the writers for caring enough to make major events in the show actually change the characters - I mean just compare ill-tempered & immature Season 1 Frankie to rational & responsible Season 3 Frankie. As for the supporting characters; Amelia is pretty confusing and Bernie & his self-deprecating jokes make him a solid comic relief character along with Grandma Schotz.
To my own surprise, I find the jokes to be funny & unexpected, and that paired with the heartwarming dynamic between the 2 protagonists is enough to make me overlook the show's flaws & just enjoy it in all it's idiotic glory.
Game Shakers (2015)
Disappointing
Reading the description for the show got me excited, but that's where the excitement ended.
Dan's writing has become extremely tired: the dated stereotypes, re-packaged characters from his older works, out-of-touch attempts at relating to the internet generation....A WHOLE MESS.
I don't know what's up with all these children's tv writers not knowing how to grasp the fast-changing trends in tech & internet culture? Even Disney's 'Bizaardvark' - despite also doing a terrible job at incorporating tech into TV, got the self-deprecating humor of the internet generation down, along with having storylines that go miles deeper into modern day problems than anything Game Shakers has come up with so far.
I'm still within the target audience of Nickelodeon - if that adds any credibility to my review.
