From the background info I expected this movie to be a very lightweight one, but though it would fill an evening without having to invest any emotions, thinking etc.
Well, it was a lot less than that even. It's not unwatchable, but just at the brink of it. The story is so thin, it basically does not exist, the acting is elementary school level, the production is barely there, the dialogue is tragic, the conflict is like it was written by a 3 year old, and the whole thing is standing on a collection of very cringe situational gags and jokes. It just doesn't work.
Still, if you really can't do much else with an hour and a half, you will survive watching this. But if you have a clogged up drain or something, you'll have more fun dealing with that.

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this prequel. It seemed quite unnecessary, as basically everything about Dexter's origin was explained in the original series, so a prequel seemed like just a boring money grab idea.
In a way it is, to be fair. It feels very much like a rehash of the original, following its structure and ideas closely, only with a younger cast. Exploring Dexter's younger days doesn't really feel important, it's just a ploy to practically re-do the Dexter series and sell it once again.
On the other hand, it is also similar in the way that it is interesting, captivating, entertaining.
So I for one will probably keep watching it. It's not as original as its sequel, the actors are not as great, especially when you must constantly compare them to their older counterparts. (As many pointed it out already, the casting for Deb really, truly went awry... Not like the actress herself is really bad, she's just very-very unsuited for this part, and it doesn't help that the character itself is a not very well written here.) But overall, I have to say that the series is good so far. Let's see where it goes, and how long it can keep itself alive.
