The Happy Prince (2018)
Good, but not perfect.
The story is a challenging one to tell, and although all concerned make a valiant attempt to capture the genius and tragedy of the man, somehow the end result is not entirely convincing. At times, a little over dramatic and cliched; and excessively focused on Wild's sexuality. At the end of the film one feels one knows more about Wilde, but does not know him better.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)
NOT worthy
Don't waste your time watching this. It is vastly inferior to the original. Just a very lame, loosely strung together collection of well worn clichés.
The Greatest Showman (2017)
Sugar Coated Cheezeyness
The general viewer will probably find this a bit too sentimental, but lovers of sentimental mush will most likely find it enjoyable. Harmless family entertainment, but NOT the greatest.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
It's a Star Wars Movie!
More of the same, and although a reasonable effort is made to develop the Star Wars story it is highly derivative. Despite that, it is watchable .
Renegades (2017)
Yawn.
Despite all the noise and explosions this film is an ideal cure for insomnia.
Bloodlines (2005)
Disappointing
The production values of this made-for-TV movie are very much in keeping with much of contemporary UK TV drama, i.e. cheap, formulaic and dull. This is a shame as there is a quite interesting storyline underneath what is yet another uninspiring police drama. There many fine established actors here, who try their best, but struggle to make this movie believable. Emma Pierson and Max Beesley are reasonably convincing, but much of the rest of the cast seem like fish out of water in their roles. Perhaps they were miscast – or maybe misdirected, I'm not sure, but either way the effect is disappointing. Don't go out of your way to watch this one, but that said, it's an acceptable way to fill a couple of hours slumped in front of the TV, when your tired and feeling vegetative.
Paragraf 78 - Film vtoroy (2007)
This is only half (the second half of) a movie
This film is part two of a two-part movie. That's right, a two-part movie: it is not a sequel. So I would ordinarily advise that one should watch the first half before watching this. However, on this occasion I would rather say that it's better to watch neither. Ostensibly, perhaps, the movie was split in two because there was a very long story to be told. Each 'half', however is only ninety minutes long, so a 'whole' movie would be three hours. That's long, but there have been plenty of longer movies made. What's more, there really isn't a great deal of a story told, rather it relies too much on drawn out melodrama and repeated fight (gun and fist) scenes which seem to be there in profusion because the writer has run out of ideas, so there's really no justification for splitting the film in two at all. Trimmed down to about eighty to ninety minutes overall it might be worth watching, but as it is, watching it is an endurance.
Enfermés dehors (2006)
Far from farcical French farce
This is French farce at it's best, funniest and most endearing. To appreciate it, one does need to have a sense of the ridiculous, and it helps if you are open to the notion that we live in a ridiculous world. It is a story of a crazy man in a crazy world: and plenty of crazy things happen in the movie. It's not just farce and slapstick, however – although that comes in plentiful supply. Rather, the story is really about society's perceptions of sanity and madness. It invites us to question the values that we have in modern society: it's somewhat anarchic in a way only the French can be, but overall it is houmourous – providing one had a sense of humour, that is. On a technical note, the direction and cinematography are innovative and intriguing, which all adds to the enjoyment of the film.
