How one can rate this film less than 9/10 is beyond me... it may not be Wallace and Gromit, Wall E, Ratatouille, Storks or even the Minions, but it succeds on every level - it can easily compete with Pixar, Dreamworks or Aardman productions.
the animation/character and background design is great, the music is very good, the voice actors are great as well and most importantly: the story/screenplay is excellent. parts of it may not be overly original, but overall it works very well, there's enough emotion, scares and music as well as strong themes.
it actually is a 9/10 in my book, but because of the suspiciously low rating (6 or so at the time of writing), I give it a 10. would rewatch anytime!

...but I pretty much enjoyed this film.
yes it is influenced by (or even copies from) other pieces such as "The Game"/"The Truman Show" and the lesser known "Tabloid"/"My Little Eye". it is by no means a masterpiece (my vote of 10 was just given to outweigh the unjust all the 1 votes, I actually give it a 7-8).
but to address some points of criticism listed by the other reviewers: the directing is solid, the soundtrack/score is okay, the acting is good enough and even if the story sounds familiar, all of that adds up to a solid piece of entertainment.
its certainly better than many other indie flicks dealing with reality TV shows too, so I doubt you will regret watching it.

underrated but great thriller with a good script, excellent young actors (especially Thora Birch) and a director who created a modern masterpiece of (human) horror. unlike Scream and all the other cheap hollywood teen horror/thriller movies The Hole is all about suspense, about the evil in one itself.
