The films looks great, the performances are all great. Lily Rose Depp is really the star of the film, she's perfectly cast.
But really though, haven't we seen this story told many times before. The original Nosferatu was an unofficial version of Dracula, it's essentially the same story though. The 1922 version is incredible, even to this day it holds up, I don't think this new version really adds anything.
I didn't like the version of Orlock in this new version. His voice was bizarre, it kept reminding me of interviews I had seen with Salvador Dali! Also how he looked was just inferior to the original film. The original film portrayed him as not quite human, he had the look of a bat or a rat about him, it was far more visually striking.
I can see why this film appealed to Eggers, but it just feels unnecessary. It's not bad, but it all feels overly familiar. I wish he'd brought something new to it rather that just give a straight remake.

Watched last night and was a little disappointed after reading positive reviews. The story unfolds in six chapters told in a non-chronological order. It doesn't take long to realise that what you were initially lead to believe was going on actually isn't what is happening.
I suppose there is some fun had in seeing how all the pieces fit together. The film is well made and has good performances. My main complaint is that beyond how stylish it it, there really isn't much substance here. You never really know much about any of the characters or why they are doing what they do, you just don't care. Ultimately you might enjoy it, but it's pretty forgettable.
