The Stepford Wives (2004)
Quite a Let-down
I went to see this movie for the sole reason of seeing Glenn Close, whom is a very great actress. Many people had also commented on how great the original was, so I was ready to see this supposedly great film. I was utterly disappointed. Obviously not sticking to the exact script of the original, the whole thing smelled of modern humor gone terribly bad.
Nicole Kidman's character was, at times, convincing. Bette Midler's character was an obvious replay of her previous roles. Glenn Close's character was absolutely unconvincing. But the worst ever was Matthew Broderick's character. I just wanted to cry after watching him flounder about in the depthless role of the weak-then-suddenly-brave and-bad husband. And I'm quite sure the original Stepford Wives didn't have a gay couple--intended, I guess to put a modern twist on it. The characters didn't have pasts; they didn't have reasons to act the way they did. This small detail drove me up a wall: Faith Hill's character has a "blow out" at the party and sparks fly out of her ears. Another wife spits out money like an ATM. It is later revealed that the wives aren't robots; they're merely brainwashed. So tell me how a normal person shoots sparks out of their ears and money out of their mouths? It doesn't make sense!
This movie could have been so much better if someone would have actually read the script and then threw it away and wrote something more meaningful. At the end of the movie, I was left there wondering what its point was.
But there is one redeeming quality in the movie: the 1950s styled costumes. They were bright, well fitted, and the only thing interesting on the show. So if you are really into the costume thing, just grit your teeth and sit through this hopelessly ridiculous movie.
Treasure Planet (2002)
so good it makes you want to watch it again and again
when i first saw the commercials, i'll admit i was a bit skeptic. i love Disney but i was like "this is way too far." i was wrong. i have two younger sisters ( i myself am a teen) who are the ages of 10 and 6. i thought that if one understood the movie, the other wouldn't. wrong again. my sisters wanted to see the movie, so my mother and i had to take them. i sat down in the theater, expecting a boring movie that made no sense (like Lilo and Stitch). within the first 5 minutes i was captivated. i loved the crazy characters, the witty dialogue, and the (as usual) wonderful animation. usually after seeing a movie in theaters, you think "i can't wait for it to come out on video/dvd". there are very few that make you want to turn around and watch the next viewing. Treasure Planet was one of those few. a definite must of any family, no matter what age the kids are. half the people in my high school are ready to buy the dvd today when it comes out!!
Hamlet (1990)
Exactly as Shakespeare planned.
This is a wonderful movie, an almost line-for-line version of the famous play. I had read the book before watching the movie, and I was surprised at how close the two were. Glenn Close and Mel Gibson were excellent. Glenn played the role of Gertrude so convincingly that you couldn't help but love her. She showed what the play could not: that Gertrude was still a good person and a wonderful mother. The audience couldn't hate her after that wonderful performance. Mel Gibson's version of Hamlet is great, too. He's perfect for all the wide-eyed and bewildered scenes. No one could have done a job anywhere close to being as wonderful as his. The costumes were original, the whole cast was smashing, and the plot line stayed true to that of it's namesake. What more could you ask for?
The West Wing (1999)
wonderful! Louisiana teens love it!
I'll admit, I just recently became a ww fan. I started turning on the tv on wed. nights and watching the end of the show. the 1st episode i saw was the 1 where CJ Cregg's bodyguard was shot. i watched the last 10 min and immediately wanted to see more. i mentioned this during one of my high school classes. my friend asked if there was a tall redhead on there, and i replied yes. she exclaimed "that's CJ!! she rocks. the show is the West Wing." i soon realized that over half of my high school watched the political drama, as well as several adults. our whole gym class discusses every new episode and we bring up all of our fave "highlight" moments--CJ falling into the pool in the shadow of two gunman, or, my personal fave, CJ telling Mitch "of the things i don't care about, you're right up front." the ww is more than just some stupid, useless show. it's politics at it's best. i love the "walk and talk" scenes, the superb sets, and the unforgettable characters. the show just keeps you on your toes, always wondering "What's next?" My personal favorites are CJ Cregg (Allison Janney) in The Long Goodbye, and Toby Zeigler in Holy Night. Angel Maintenance is another great one. if you haven't watched this, you need to start watching it. it's intelligent, fast-paced, and just plain GREAT!!!
