Black Cadillac (2003)
Black Cadillac is a fine ride
"Road Rage" crosses the "Macon County Line".
Macon County Line, for those who haven't seen it, was a great 70's drive-in kinda movie that featured former Beverly Hillbilly Max Baer as the sheriff of a small town who mistakenly thinks his family has been hurt by three teenagers in a hopped-up car who are just passing through. What the two films have in common is the sort of wide-eyed sober look at the actions of all the characters - there isn't any red herring to distract you - everything happening is plausible (okay, it certainly seemed like the Saab was feline: it had at least 9 lives!!), but the subtext about driving from Minnesota into Wisconsin to drink under aged adds great backbone to the entire story. If you know anyone from that area of the country they'll tell you about bartenders at pubs close to the state line spinning yarns to scared and slightly tipsy Minnesota teens that, among other hazards in the area, crazed killer Ed Gein was supposedly out on parole and lurking for them just outside the bar. I'd love to hear the real tale or tales that figure in why this one says "Based on a true story".
When all is said and done the low budget may have shown itself a few times, but overall the suspense was steady and that Caddy was way too cool! VERY IMPORTANT - once you understand this is an action flick and not a horror movie it makes it easier to stay with the storyline. This is NOT another version of Christine. It's Another Return To Macon County.
Deep Evil (2004)
solid sci-fi action flick with good effects
The CGI effects, the "liquid metal" type reminiscent of those in Abyss and T-2, are the real star of what is a pleasing combination of Alien and The Thing. Lorenzo Lamas is the sole bit of recognizable star power, but he's purely incidental to how enjoyable this flick turns out to be. Pour a drink, open a bag of chips and turn off your brain while you watch this one. If you take it too seriously you're going to end up bitter and twisted...just like many of the IMDb Users whose comments seem to be coming from either film-school dropouts or Hollywood wannabees. Or both. Remember - it's called the "willing suspension of disbelief" for a reason. Are we talking Academy awards here? Nope. Instead we have an hour and a half of cinematic popcorn - tasty enough to entertain but nothing that will stick with you for long. The folks at First Look Home Entertainment and DEJ Productions have given us another solid effort. Keep 'em coming, guys.
Contagion (2002)
Solid Little Action Flick
Wasting no time at all, we open with the President of the United States (Bruce Boxleitner) being shot with a small dart as he's getting into his limo. At the hospital, beautiful & brilliant Dr. Diane Landis (Megan Gallagher) gives the bad news: POTUS has been infected with the deadly Ebola virus. Meanwhile, the folks behind the poison dart (Jeffrey Combs from Reanimator, etc. and Lin Shaye of Farrelly Bros. fame) make a ransom demand of $100 million dollars in return for an antidote. Keeping with our nation's policy of not negotiating with terrorists, POTUS says no deal. With the virus spreading, the army (led by Wonder Years Dad Dan Lauria) decides the best way to contain the outbreak is to blow up the hospital along with everything (and everyone) within a one square mile radius. Can Dr. Landis find a cure in time? Will the army blow up the hospital, killing thousands in the surrounding area? Is that REALLY the same woman from Something About Mary?
Hallow's End (2003)
LOW BUDGET HALLOWEEN HORROR FLICK SHOT IN TEXAS
A group of fraternity brothers and their girlfriends are holding a Haunted House to raise some money. Local farmer `Pumpkin Jack' wants to help out, and brings a box of props for them to use. Little do they know, the goodies he brought include a book of witch's chants and a cursed jack-lantern among other items. While everyone is setting up for the haunted evening, one girl gets busy reading passages aloud from the book, which in horror movies is usually not a good thing. As the evening progresses, one by one the guys and girls dressed up in scary outfits start to become the creatures they're dressed up as. Dracula turns into an actual vampire and tries to bite people's necks. The zombie becomes a zombie and wants to eat the brains of his friends, and a bitchy girl turns into a witchy woman. Very low budget, but it's releasing the week before Halloween, so it's probably going to make money on home video.
