One death. a phone call. and a knock on the door of a dark room/ leads to an amazing journey in love/ loneliness and imagination/ but you can never be sure what is real and what is not real. However sad and beautiful the story is/ this is one of those rare films that turns itself into a living dream. But If your into spoon fed narratives/ then please chose another movie. If you can let go. . .then you wont be the same again. I let go. . and enjoyed one the best films I have seen in many years/
Mind blowing postmodernism. . .existential madness with poetic sadness. Intensely beautiful, horribly violent. If you want to be spoon fed a story(narrative)or have an explanation given to you there is none. And why does there have to be? Everything is intended to work in your own mind. Now having said that. . .if you really need some kind of meaning to be present in the movie then there are hints to some kind of inner workings taking place. Such as Christianity and the invasion of the new world. "Primitive" ideals vs Christian ideal and how both have a history of profound violence. One Eye gives himself over to the "Primitive ideals" and leaves his student to ponder what it means to "go home" or to make a far away place into "home". Also One Eye may have some reference to the Celtic, Irish god Mug Ruith and his adventures in the Holy Land and the myth that he beheaded John the Baptist. Anyway the film is not for everybody but one of the best movies I've seen in many years.
Does anyone recognize the brilliant interplay of horror, humor and action in this movie? Of the film's powerful philosophical statements on American violence? It pokes fun at the justification of violence by religious zealots and low mentality people. . .people who live for apocalyptic wars that support extreme agendas.
Often the audience itself is being made fun of and their response to the absurdity of American ideologies that advocate and supports violence.
There is also a powerful play on classic horror films such as Night of The Living Dead. Beyond the the films comments on violence and horror there is the brilliant cinema photography and stunning special effects that add to a powerful mix of humor, terror and explosive action.
A great movie that should not be taken too serious, expect on its statements about the absurd nature of extreme violence in American culture.
