The Sandman (2022)
Not very compelling fantasy for my taste :-(
Dark period visuals with good actors, but a weak fantasy story. Some concepts reminiscent of the Lucifer series, but not as engaging or entertaining. And while some period similarities as Penny Dreadful, the story was not as exciting nor nearly as scary or even creepy :-(
DC League of Super-Pets (2022)
Unexpected delight!!! :-)
Beautiful character designs and animation, and lots of funny scenes! :-). A funny, heartwarming story and an all-star voice cast to top it off! Not to mention some super cute and comical designs!
Day Shift (2022)
A mixed bag of some good comedy, some good action, and some mediocre writing
Fox and Franco make a good pair that helped with more than a few funny moments :-) Lots of the vampire-fighting action was cool, while some was over-choreographed :-( There was an excessive amount of overly-convenient writing even for a comedy. In the end, it was a mixed bag that was still relatively enjoyable to watch :-)
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)
Another fun ride! :-)
Even not knowing anything about the games, I enjoyed the characters! Also, like the first one, it has good comedic writing not just geared towards kids.
7 Days (2021)
A surprisingly enjoyable COVID dramedy :-)
Many funny and heartwarming moments :-) An interesting look at arranged relationships across the ocean in America. Shows what can happen when two different souls are forced together in an unusual situation.
Lightyear (2022)
Wanted to love this, so it hurts me to say that it was mediocre :-(
I have to finally resign myself that the Pixar instant-classic streak has been over for over 2 years! :-(
1. Onward (2020) 6 of 10
2. Soul (2020) 6 of 10
3. Luca (2021) 7 of 10
4. Turning Red (2022) 7 of 10
5. Lightyear (2022) 6 of 10
Despite an almost 25-year streak of gold instant classic entries (10's, 9's, and 8's), three very disappointing entries, and two just decent entries that do not rise to classic status :-(
The staples of their success do not hold up in these disappointments like Lightyear:
1. CHARACTERS Buzz was weak, and his supporting rag-tag crew was even more weak despite having talent like Taika Waititi! :-(
2. STORY: Not very compelling or very exciting, despite trying to amp up the action! :-(
3. VOICE ACTORS: It was a bad decision to not use the original voice of the classic character :-(. And, a big missed opportunity to use bland voices for the robot cat and E. R. I. C.! :-(
4. COMEDY: I did not laugh out loud or find myself uncontrollably smiling even once! :-(
5. HEARTWARMING: The characters were just not likable enough to have much feeling for them! :-(
Sigh.
Prey (2022)
Very nice entry in the franchise! Great job, Hulu! :-)
While it started off pretty slow, it built up to an awesome set of confrontations! The young girl was a convincing, cunning warrior, and her brother had some great scenes too!
The Lost City (2022)
Pretty funny with some fun action :-)
The Bullock/Tatum dynamic was fun, and Brad Pitt's character had an awesome action scene! :-) Some similarities to Romancing the Stone, but has a personality of its own.
Green Lantern: Beware My Power (2022)
Good action with some heart! :-)
I found John Stewart to be a more compelling, realistic character than Hal Jordan (especially this DCAMU version). Green Arrow and Hawk Girl were good supporting characters.
Jurassic World: Dominion (2022)
5.7???!!! What are y'all thinking? What more could we have asked more from this awesome movie?!
Bring back all of our favorite characters from the series and have them work together, bring back all of our favorite dinosaurs from the series and mash them up, bring back that patented Jurassic Park exciting action, and bring back those chilling dinosaur terror scenes! Yay, they brought it all back for a great ending to this 30-year-old franchise! :-)
The Gray Man (2022)
Crazy, exciting super-spy action flick! :-)
Loads of great action from the Russo brothers who already brought us some of the best action movies of all time! Many innovative scenes keep it fresh! :-)
Ms. Marvel (2022)
Really enjoyed the main character, her family, and friends! :-)
Really cool visual effects and a story with lots of heart! The main character has tons of charisma and charm, and her parents are very engaging. :-) I liked seeing new diverse culture in the MCU :-)
Baymax! (2022)
Like Dug Days. another beautifully animated, heartwarming, funny show :-)
Unlike other TV shows spun off from movies, it looks like this one is using the same awesome movie-quality animation! And instead of focusing on the superhero aspect of the character, they put all the focus on his original caregiving functionality :-)
The Terminal List (2022)
Some great action, but a lot of slow moments and a somewhat convoluted plot :-(
The acting was good, the plot was interesting, the action was intense, but they spent too much time on the wrong characters, too much time on confusing/repetitive hallucinations, and too much time slowing the pace down.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Too whacky and not very funny for my taste :-(
I love many of these actors in the many roles I have seen them in, but this quirky, artsy, not very funny, hard-to-follow spectacle was not enjoyable at all for me :-( The artsy writer/director tries to mesh intellectual topics with quirky humor, and it just does not work for me! :-(
Dual (2022)
Low budget and fairly corny, but has interesting and creepy sci-fi concepts
Almost worked for me, but there were too many weak moments, and the acting was not great - especially the main actress who delivers lines so blandly. They also did not explain various concepts regarding clones that are fully grown and functional in an hour :-(
The Bad Guys (2022)
Pretty funny and fun movie with awesome DreamWorks animation :-)
The concept was mostly cool, and the voice acting was great! The creative way they animated the vastly different animal characters was impressive! However, the dialog and story do not rise to the level of the animated classics.
The Man from Toronto (2022)
Funny premise :-)
My wife and I laughed hysterically for the first half, and a bit less for the second half. Kevin Hart steals the show, but Woody Harrelson was fun to watch too.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Spectacular visuals and lots of fan-satisfying surprises! :-)
Lots of Easter Eggs for anyone who has seen all the MCU movies and Disney+ shows! :-) And while I favor the more grounded side of the MCU without multiverse antics, I found this thrilling and very enjoyable! :-)
The Old Man (2022)
Interesting unique story with an old dude who is constantly underestimated! :-)
Two great actors, Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow, are a tour-de-force in this unexpected, exciting show! :-) There are more than a few slow moments, but they are filled with heart and tension :-) And the action/fight choreography is unlike anything I have seen! :-)
The Valet (2022)
Was touching, and had me laughing quite a lot! :-)
Eugenio is always great, and was especially so in this humble role as a valet :-) Lots of funny situations and funny lines to delight the whole family! :-)
The Lincoln Lawyer (2022)
Exciting courtroom series with good characters :-)
The relationships between the main character, his assistants, his driver, his ex-wives, his daughter, and the police detective are all pretty compelling. And his courtroom style is also very engaging! :-)
The Northman (2022)
Great viking flic!
Reminiscent of what we saw in the awesome Vikings series, there was a lot of attention to detail put into viking customs and their realities! :-) Alexander Skarsgard was awesome as always!
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
Better than The Book of Boba Fett, although not quite as awesome as The Mandalorian -)
I love the uniqueness and coolness of The Mandalorian (which I rate even higher than this one in a category of its own :-), and I loved aspects of The Book of Boba Fett (which I rate lower than this one), but my nostalgia kicked highest into gear when I saw Obi-Wan Kenobi, because it felt so much like the Star Wars movies - a bit more than the other two. Ewan McGregor is awesome as always, and his interaction with Young Leia is a true delight! :-)
Pahanhautoja (2022)
Creepy, nice effects, great lead, but story is a bit flimsy :-(
The awesome young lead and the increasing creepiness had me for much of the movie :-) But it just became less and less believable with each scene, and eventually lost me :-(
