Breach (2007)
Watch This Movie
Chris Cooper is brilliant. The screenwriter and director have done a very good job of storytelling in one of those situations where you have seen the TV Newsmagazine treatment and you know who did it and how it ends. (spoiler alerts not applicable for this one.)
This movie has a very strong cast including Laura Linney, Dennis Haysbert, Ryan Philippe, Gary Cole and Kathleen Quinlan - who all give their usual solid interpretations. But to me, Cooper stands out with a truly memorable performance, pardon my cliché.
Watch this movie if, like me you passed it over because you had seen it in the news. The suspense, detail and different angles of perspective will amaze you.
Mr. Jones (1993)
What a waste of time
Stinker alert; this flick sucks big time. I am dumbfounded by the number of favorable reviews. This movie was recommended to me by a trusted source, so I watched. I love Anne B., I crave Lena Olin (I've seen all of her major work) and the director has an excellent track record. Lastly, I believe the original screenplay must have been good, as the bones of a solid film appear to be there.
To me the derailment is Gere's performance. He is horrible in the same goofy way that he played the lead character in Breathless, another decent film, torpedoed by an over the top, and unbelievably unrealistic interpretation. To say he 'phoned-it-in would be kind. He didn't even tweet-it-in. To be totally honest, I think Lena must also be called out for several scenes where she is too stiff, even though she may have been directed in that manner.
Delroy Lindo, superb as always. Lastly, the young Asian patient and her family were much more interesting than the cliché riddled Mr. Leading Man / Jones. I would have rather seen more development of her character and her relationship with the medical staff.
This movie is a total waste. If you value your time do not bother with it, tuning into TV Land for two hours (laden with commercial potty breaks) would be more satisfying.
Wild Orchid (1989)
Come On Folks, This Flick Stinks
Wild Orchid makes my all time bombs list. Bad, Bad, Bad. The writing is sixth grade level, stupid, indulgent, pretentious without any hint of intellectual depth. (There is a rumor that the original script was done in crayon.) The acting is absolutely horrid and over the top. You know, some of these people were in good movies at various times in their careers. What happened here? Maybe an idiot director drugged up on his own ego and happy to waste OPM (other peoples money).
For a good laugh, check out the wardrobe and hair-dos, and don'ts. The credits say 1990, but it looks more like 1983.
I believe this movie experience brought on the downward spiral of the previously brilliant acting career of Mickey Rourke.
Spoiler alert not necessary with this piece of 'dirt, nothing to spoil in terms of plot or suspense. PSA // STINKER ALERT!
