Notoriously violent cross genre Hong Kong movie. Watched it with a film club recently, and it really plays out in front of an audience. The film is just so over the top violent, it makes it really funny. Its more like Peter Jacksons Bad Taste than a prison movie. It should really be celebrated as a comedy of the worst taste, and secondly as a low budget effects movie. They really go all out with this movie, and it is a non stop assault to the senses. I believe that anyone can enjoy this movie, if the approach it in the right way... but I may be incorrect lol.
It doesn't make any sense, and is so purposefully cliched, well I guess that's the butt of the joke really. It jumps around from action, horror, sci-fi (even a love story they claim, but I found this narrative thin on the ground), and none of this really matters. Fantastic! Entertainment in its purest form.

I would like to blame actors, but I feel it simply comes down to bad direction. I mean how long can you follow someone in a track shot and still remain convincing that you have the plague. Ill-conceived, and badly done. Make-up is minimal and poor. Lead actress couldn't convince me she has a cold, never mind a zombie plague.
I mean, it is not as if the 1 track shot movie has not been done before, and pulled-off well. There is Hardcore Henry (2015), which I didn't enjoy too much either, but at least it was visually impressive and well executed.
Reminded me far too much of a 1st person shooter game, and that's why I'd play a game, not watch a movie version of that. Games becoming more cinematic ok, but the other way around????
Its also a bit like George Romero's The Crazies, without any action.
Had my say, give it a shot.

Like to draw attention to Lily-Rose Depp performance and the possession, which I thought was particularly good. Up there with the Exorcist!
The Nosferatu vampire draws on many from the past retellings of the story, but brings something new to the table also in with Eggers own signature. There are touches of original Nosferatu, Salems Lot, Francis Ford Coppolas Bramstokers Dracula etc. Wisely he takes best elements of each, and builds on them.
I like this version of the vampire very much, with his very human and monster characteristics combined. It makes it all the more frightening, and this is a true horror film, with maybe the scariest vampire yet to hit the silver screen.
Yes, I like Lost Boys and Fright Night etc, but they are not strictly horror. I found the 15 rating kinda surprising, but again glad it opens the movie up to a broader audience.
It is a very dark film, but very fun also as it lies clearly in the realm of fiction. 2 hrs 10 min well spent at the cinema. Great retelling of a tale, and just when you thought the genre had already had all the blood squeezed out of it. It is impressive though, that they can tell the exact same story so many times and still come up with something fresh.
