Khali the Killer (2017)
Not your typical hit man film and that's a good thing!
The title was a bit misleading but I really liked where this film went. Richard Cabral played Khali beautifully and with a really convincing passion and frustration. An ex East LA gang member gone solo who doesn't speak Spanish but knows lot's of Spanish phrases as pick up lines. Corina Calderon is also very talented, beautiful and convincing in her role as the ex and current love and co-motivator. Khalis grandmother is also his motivation. There is a certain level of both humour and desperation in all of the main characters throughout the film. The male nurse and the grandmother in particular stand out for some likable absurdities. Like the title, the opening scene would lead you to expect a slightly higher level of hit man skill and less vulnerability from Khali than transpires but it all seems to work in the end. Overall while a bit slow burning the film left me smiling and wanting to see a lot more of the characters. Definitely a film worth watching
Free Ride (2013)
Great period feeling
While not a perfect film I thought it was none the less very good. Great performances by all of the cast and really took me back to the 70's style wise. I liked the music as well but mostly I liked Anna Paquin. She plays a mom that is pretty strong and and loves her girls but knows she has to take risks to take care of them. There could have been a bit more character development and perhaps more interaction at school for the girls but keeping it from being too long won out in the end I believe. For a true story I think it deserves a watch and feel confident that it is at least worth a 7 out of 10. Few will be disappointed .... Cheers
Stuck in Love (2012)
Great film about first love and last love!
I loved this film! The casting was very good and all of the characters convincing. Nat Wolff, while unknown to me and maybe most did a bang up job as the inexperienced teen encountering his first experiences with love and sex. Lily Collins in the role of older and very cynical sister was great. It is a film about a family that shares writing and reading as a passion but all have their own vulnerabilities and needs. All of the characters except perhaps Logan Lerman's also has a degree of dysfunction that needs to be addressed. This film kept me involved from start to finish. Greg Kinnear and Jennifer Connolly were very well casted as the divorced parents while Liana Liberato and Logan Lerman did a great job as the young love interests to Nat Wolff and Lily Collins. Altogether a great film that was well worth watching and I recommend it to anyone that likes good intelligent drama.
