Zhu lian yu mu (2024)
Overhyped and disappointing
To be honest I've seen better acting from the lead actress and actor in their other dramas.
Pacing is slow and I have issues with the plot progression and characterisation. Logic is lacking in a lot of the storyline.
How is it possible for the female lead to look so unsullied and relatively neat as a slave in the first two episodes compared to other grubby and downtrodden slaves? Where did she find the strength and wits to fight off two guys while under water, escape the sharks and hold her breath long enough to unearth a prized pearl with seemingly supernatural abilities?
The supporting cast is not as strong. Acting and expressions are a little exaggerated. For superb acting, watch the leads in Love Game in Eastern Fantasy, New Beginnings or The Double.
I gave up after struggling to finish episode 5. Zhao Lusi has turned out good dramas in the past. Love Like the Galaxy, The Romance of Tiger and Rose, and Hidden Love as well The Long Ballad are good examples.
This one is unfortunately a miss for me.
Yong ye xing he (2024)
Favourite C drama of 2024
Highly entertaining and super addictive eastern fantasy drama with an engaging cast of characters, immersive story telling from female lead's POV. Set design, costume and animation effects greatly enhanced the audience's viewing pleasure.
The palpable chemistry between the leads Esther Yu and Ryan Ding is one of the key reasons why this drama attracted me.
The superlative acting, humorous moments and underpinning themes of kinship, family, friendship and budding romance woven into this adventure drama are other compelling reasons that kept me glued to the screen.
Each supporting character has its own storyline and the different types of demon each has distinctive costume designs that add to the appeal of this drama.
Cang Lan jue (2022)
Favourite drama of 2022
This is the series that got me hooked on the genre and spoiled me for subsequent c-dramas that came after. This series is also the standard I hold up the others to. Not only is the acting, costume, cinematography and the digital effects on point, the sizzling chemistry between the two leads and the strong supporting cast performance created an epic fantasy that had me watching this on repeat.
Every time I get into a slump, I'll dig this gem out, sometimes watching the entire drama again, sometimes picking the highlights or my favourite episodes to relive. Definitely one you won't regret watching despite some of the plot points being familiar - but tried and tested to catch your attention.
Delhi Crime (2019)
Gut wrenching true crime drama
This is a gritty, grim re-enactment of a 6-year old crime that leaves you gutted as the horror of a heinous gang rape unfolded during the course of investigation. There were other layers of political conflicts, societal pressures and ugly revelations of human behaviour that made this docu-drama a gripping watch.
