Anyone who flies a confederate flag or cherishes a statue of Robert E Lee may as well skip this one, as you'll be completely offended. I'm not sure if this would officially qualify as dystopian, but I would say it fits. It's classified as horror, and it is most definitely that - only it's also "real life." It was a hard movie to watch, knowing the history of slavery and the continued treatment of Black bodies in the United States. I don't live in the US, but have been watching the nationalism flourish under the previous president, and still fear that there is more to come. In that sense, this movie was not at all "surprising" nor did it have a "twist ending" as others have described. I knew exactly what to expect and my prediction was (sadly) bang on. Frankly, any white people on the fence about the Black Lives Matter movement could benefit from watching this movie. Janelle Monáe gave a stellar performance.
They only focus about 90% on U-S-A. Just started episode 2 and they state one team from Canada is in 4th place, but we know nothing about that team....BUT we've heard from 5 different US teams ... one of whom is in "dead last" and the other who fell way behind because they pushed too hard and one of their teammates has heat exhaustion (and his oh-so-caring teammates are forcing him on and actually look angry at him).
We've heard about a team from New Zealand and another from India. Otherwise it's "USA, USA".
Also, we barely see any of the actual "race"... it's mainly just a lot of interviews/commentaries by team USA. They announced that people were making it to checkpoint 3 which was supposed to be through the bush on an island around an active volcano and we've barely seen any of it.
I don't recommend watching. Stopped halfway through episode 2.

A lot of the reviewers seem to have stopped watching halfway through the movie and then said they couldnt stand it. There are 4 very different characters in this movie and every single one of them brings a completely different perspective to not only the situation at hand, but society, racism and privilege. The dialogue forces not only the characters, but the audience to check their perception and shines a light on the fallacy of assumption. The fact that so many people chose to stop listening (watching) before the end (the movie was under 90 minutes) certainly speaks to that same fallacy AND the state of our society. It is exactly that lack of patience people have for differing experience that this film succinctly represents.
