I remember vividly having watched this movie very close to its VHS release. Yes DVD was already established and altough i had a Playstation 2 in my bedroom, we only had a VCR in the living room and i wanted to watch this with my mother while also taking advantage of our (then) pretty solid sound system. But when it comes to the movie itself, i had very little memory of it.
We rented it at the video store next door (i litterally lived 1 street corner away from it) and it was the only time i watched it. My memories of it was that i didn't enjoyed it that much while it wasn't the "worst thing" either. 20 years later i can say my opinion changed quite a bit.
Maybe its because i have more nostalgia for the 2000s movies, as they have that unique blend of alternative rock, new gothic and very definining CGI mixed with practical effects. This movie gives you a hodge podge of a lot of different style. One scene you have classic music in a ballroom, and shortly after you got that alternative rock i just mentioned.
I think this is really where the movie shine the most, in its presentation both visual and sound. The story itself is intriguing but could had been developed a bit more, especially the background of the ship itself, but it serve its purpose overall.
Now altough the movie has very creepy imagery when it comes to the sets, and it also has a few pretty gory scenes, i think where it lack a bit is that it never get really "scary". You got a few typical "ghost stuff" scenes, but unlike most haunted house or "demonic" movies, no scenes made me jump or get nervous on what was coming next.
Now i know the "jump scare" stuff is something that a lot of peoples grew tired of, maybe it would actually be a plus for some peoples that it does not have much of it, but as someone who don't watch horror movies that often outside Halloween season these days (and most being slashers or vampire movies), i like a good jump scare still or something that will really spook me.
In conclusion i did enjoyed my time tonight watching Ghost Ship, a lot more than i expected to based on my (fuzzy) memory of it. I will definately keep that DVD that i aquired on Ebay for this viewing in my collection.

This is another movie from almost 10 years ago i missed back then. So being on Netflix i decided to give it a shot tonight. I had no idea how praised it was. Just having a known cast and an alien theme was what made me want to watch it.
Now, this is hard to talk about most of the plot without spoiling anything, so i won't, but while the general idea i think is pretty good on paper, oh boy did this movie moved at a snail pace.
I get that not all movies need to be Independance Day or such, but i like a little more story progression. This movie felt like a 40 minute "The Outer Limits" episode but with the great cinematography you know Denis Villeneuve for.
Yes the movie is beautiful, extremely well filmed, and also well acted. Where i have issues is simply in the pacing. It could had been 90 minutes and it would had already help a lot.
Now... did i enjoyed the movie? Not really. I was bored more than not. But can i recognize it is well made? Yes. I think this is a perfect exemple that some cinema fans like myself do like "mindless entertainement" and even the badly rated movies like the worst Marvel movies entertained me a lot more. I would rewatch "The Marvels" or "Ant-Man Quantumania" over and over before rewatching this one.
That said it would be unfair to give it a terrible rating, but i can't go above a 6. Consider this rating a mix between my personal enjoyement and its technical prowess.

I remember when this came out, i guess i was a bit over the whole "young adult novel" and didn't watch it. Fast forward years later i found a bluray of the third movie for 1$ so i picked it. Naturally i had to start by the beginning and i think this is where this movie probably work better nowadays then it may had done back then. As this is mostly a giant introduction.
If i want to watch the sequel, i can do it tonight, and the third one tomorow. I don't have to wait for it. This movie serve as an introduction to the characters and this "world" as a whole. The runtime is about 1h50 and yet they don't spend a lot of time in the actual Maze itself.
I was expecting more of a "Cube" type of movie where they were stuck in a Maze and had to find the way out, and the whole movie would be about this. But here we spend a lot of time with the characters in their "new life" of some sort. They cultivate, they built, they pretty much live at the center and only sent "runners" during the day to cartograph the Maze.
Yet despite what could be perceived as a slow burn, i never felt bore or such. The mystery itself is interesting and when the action kick in, its pretty solid.
Overall i really enjoyed my time and altough i don't know exactly yet when i will watch the rest of the trilogy (could be this week), it won't be long. It is a pretty solid 7.4 out of 10 to me.
