Ocean's Eight (2018)
Lacks excitement and casting was not great
The whole vibe around this movie was not great anyway and I don't think anyone expected to do better than the original trilogy. Even with lowered expectation you cannot help yourself comparing it and it doesn't look well.
The director has tried to make it look like the Soderberg movies by copying his style, but it didn't work out as well and it looks a bit parodical. There is no excitement in the plot and it falls flat - you cannot feel a proper build up to something and character development is lackluster at best.
The idea about the heist was decent and there was some good twists, but mostly things seemed forced. Things looked overplanned and you never get the feeling that they might get caught.
My biggest issue was casting. Sandra Bullock looked artificial in the role and didn't seem to give it her all. Rihanna is completely out of place and I think they didn't give her many lines, because she was just bad at acting. Richard Armitrage was not nasty enough to be disliked and James Corden had no place in that movie - he was just comical. I would have to say that Cate Blanchett and Helena Bonham Carter were great and if they got a few more of the roles as right as that the whole movie would have been a different animal.
Bottom line is that it is not as charismatic as the George Clooney trilogy.
Skyscraper (2018)
Incredibly bad
Even if they were purposely trying to make a bad movie, they wouldn't have made this thing. It just makes no sense and all of the charisma of The Rock cannot save it.
The plot is dumb and the general premise is obviously a rip off from Die Hard. But there are no funny scenes, the action is dull and characters are flat. You don't care about any of them and it is plain obvious that the Hong Kong setting is only used to sell the movie to the Chinese audience. The effects were bad and you should be trying to make Tom Cruise's stunts from MI in front of a green screen. It just doesn't work.
Honestly I cannot see what they spent $125,000,000 on, except for The Rock's salary.
Saving Mr. Banks (2013)
THanks
The movie is worth seeing only because of the actors' performances and especially the one by Tom Hanks. Do not get me wrong - this is not his best role, but still he does a splendid job as Walt Disney. The problem of this movie is that the concentration of the story is at the wrong place. I really like the idea behind how Disney filmed the tale of Merry Poppins and it definitely is interesting enough for its stand alone movie. Which is why I could not understand, why the writers decided to make it a story about the author of the book - P.L. Travers. The moments depicting the actual movie making process are lovely, funny and heart- warming. While on the other hand, the flashbacks of P.L. Travers' life are slow and boring.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
Strangely, not as enjoyable as the first one
First of all, I have to say that I am a LOTR fan (both movies and book). So I was pretty excited when I heard that Peter Jackson is going to make The Hobbit into a movie. Of course, as most fans, I was a little worried when he decided to make it a trilogy, given the shortness of the book. Nonetheless I would have to say that I really enjoyed "An Unexpected Journey", which I though was a homage to all LOTR fans. About the "Desolation of Smaug" thought I have some mixed feeling. As general I liked the movie, but there were moments I could easily lived without. The first movie was mainly criticized for not being fast enough and that the action was not enough. And I have the feeling that Peter Jackson has made anything possible to make the second one more thrilling and Hollywoodish. Not that I am having any problems with action, but in many cases I had the feeling that the story was left on the side, only to accommodate the viewers who want more action. A needless love story, too much CGI at moments, a little too much Legolas than I would have liked and not enough time spend on the important characters. On the other hand I want to say that I really like where Peter Jackson has gone with filling the gaps left by the book, when it comes to the Necromancer. Also Smaug was great! As a whole I am a fan, so maybe I am a bit too fussy about the details. So if you do not have problems with long movies, I am sure you would enjoy "The Desolation of Smaug".
Disconnect (2012)
A nice movie with a different view
This movie isn't a masterpiece, but it is definitely worth watching. I would imagine that people who have come across the same problems as the characters in the story would find it even more intriguing. I can say that the story is quite believable and well positioned. There isn't too much mixture between the different story lines, which is a good change from other multistory movies. I would say that the acting is on a high level, but without overshadowing the script. Which is I think the best characteristic of this movie. In spite of the title, it doesn't present the internet influence in our lives only with negativity, but tries to show it with a realistic approach. I specifically enjoyed how the story with the web-chat went - at the end the bad guys turned out to be not that awful. What I am trying to say is that the movie manages to keep a balanced view, without branding anything particularly bad or good, but just presenting the online world we live in and how human interaction depends on it.
The Watch (2012)
Pretty boring
When you watch the trailer of this movie, your first thought should be "Ough, another Ben Stiller movie, I'll pass." And definitely you should stick to that idea. It's not the worst movie you will see, but it is not any good either. If you have watched at least one Ben Stiller movie, it most probably means that you have seen this one. Stiller and Vaughn have passed the time, when they were funny and Jonah Hill just doesn't have any chance in this movie. Boring story, no funny moments - actually this movie easily could have been only 1 hour and it would be pretty much the same. Just don't watch it - I'm sure you would have something better to do.
Starbuck (2011)
A movie you should see
I liked "Starbuck" very much. My main advice would be to watch it before the American version is out. It's not that I don't believe in Hollywood, but I don't. This movie is heartwarming, the characters are lovable and the story is fairly original. It has moments which will make you laugh, but its true strength is in those moments which will make you smile. The acting is good, the music is very suitable and the director has managed to produce a sotry which dodges clichés. "Starbuck"is a movie which would make you feel better if you are in a bad mood, and even if you are feeling good it would elevate your spirit even more. It is not a movie to change your view on life or something, but you'll have a real fun watching it and that's what going to the movies is all about.
