Where the Heart Is (2000)
Novel plot structure. Talented acting.
This movie is based on a novel, and they chose to (rightfully!) follow its plot structure instead of cutting everything interesting and substantial from it to make it fit into a movie plot structure.
The acting was good at times, sometimes painful to watch but it's also a product of its time.
The Incredible Dr. Pol (2011)
Awful veterinary medicine. Despicable conduct.
This veterinarian has been reported to and investigated by his regulatory body several times, for doing painful procedures on patients without pain meds and proper anesthesia. It's animal abuse and violates owner consent.
Having him promote his subpar dangerous brand of vet care based on outdated and disproven methodology sets an unfortunate precedent for veterinarians who are practicing ethical, honest care for the health and well-being of their patients and their clients.
Things I Do for Money (2019)
Anti-Hamilton. Bad acting
This is such a laughable facsimile of what people think Hamilton is. This Ain't Hollywood, Sherman Ave N and James St N do not a gritty environ make. The plot is ok, the acting was forced and it wasn't even clear whether they were supposed to be in Hamilton or Vancouver. Gave up 40min in. Waste of time.
Loudermilk (2017)
Relatable, caustic and enjoyable
Let's face it: Loudermilk is unlikeable. He's like what would result if House decided to run a sober support group. He's unapologetic about it, as he's struggled with sobriety and lost things he used to love in life. The show sees him try to rebuild himself in several ways.
Contrasting his own limitations we meet the members of the sober support group all with their own backstories, a mixture of different people from different perspectives but all facing down the same temptation of alcohol and drugs.
When all of these people are brought together the result is a story based show that grows its characters, confronts stereotypes and matures over time.
Really want to see where it goes from here.
One for the Money (2012)
Decent
Haven't heard of or read the books. Came across this on Netflix and decided to give it a go.
Was a 5 star for the overall concept, Katherine Heigl
Then 6 for the supporting characters
7 for the plot which was interesting and not entirely predictable
8 for the hot guys
9 some witty dialogue, a lovely distressed leather jacket, not relying on car chases and explosives (entirely) the way a man-action comedy would
Obviously it's not going to get a sequel, but that's a shame as it sounds like the books have a dedicated fan base.
The Almighty Johnsons (2011)
A Great Blend of Fantasy and Reality
This show is really well put together. It is a perfect blend of fantasy and reality and explores Norse mythology in a compelling way. The main premise is that four brothers belong to a family of people that are living reincarnations of Norse gods. Upon his 21st birthday, Axl finds himself being told that he is Odin the All-Father, and is given a quest to find his Frigg. All four brothers - Ty, Mike, Axl and Anders - have distinct personalities. Alongside the main story line, the show also deals with how Gods interact with mortals and the grey-area that is prophecy.
This is a great show that is witty and quirky. There is quite a bit of nudity, but overall the characters drive the action forward and the mythological elements keep things interesting.
