Killing Jesus (2015)
So much left out - disappointing
As a movie, the acting was good. I did not read Bill OReilly's book so I do not know if the script was representative of the book. It seems to have relied on non biblical sources more than the Gospels. That being said, many of the miracles, the appearance of the dove at his baptism, the earthquake, the Temple Curtain being ripped in two and the story of how the disciples heard He was risen were all in accurate or left out entirely. The whole sequence of the passion, the trials and the way of the cross shortened and out of order, and there is no mention of the hundreds of people who witnessed Him after He was raised. But the worst problem is that He is not portrayed as being aware of who He was and what happening until the end of the film. So I can't recommend this movie because it seems to have taken out most of the evidence that proved that Jesus was truly God and Truly man and there is really no mention of the Holy Spirit at all. If you want to see a true picture of the suffering death and resurrection see The Passion of the Christ. If you want to know who Jesus was what he did and what He taught read the Gospels and Acts of the Apostles. I also recommend The Chosen. Even though the characters are given creative back stories to fill in the blanks, and give the apostles life; the Gospel stories of the miracles, healings and teachings are accurate.
Anyone But You (2023)
Cute Couple Bad Dislogue
I really wanted to like this movie, but some of it was raunchy for no reason. There is a scene where Glenn Powell gets naked trying get away from a spider. Sidney Sweeney is checking between his legs to find it. Sounds like the writers thought it would be
Funny but it comes off as embarrassing. As was the scene where the Australian guy is in the shower telling Glenn Powell all the Australian slang for his genitalia. The best scene was the "Titanic" moment and Sidney falling off the boat. Both the main actors had some good moments. Also it was fun to see some of the old rom com actors in supporting roles. Overall, I can't recommend the movie. With better writing, better directing and less unnecessary over the top sex content it could have been so fun.
The Chosen: Moon to Blood (2024)
Wow! Did I not see this one coming.
This is a review of the first three episodes of The Chosen season 4 seen in a theater. The writing and the acting in this series is so outstanding. I love the way I was pulled into the whirlwind of the political power struggles especially in episode 3. The pressure palpable as the Pharisees and the Sadducees are so threatened by their loss of credibility with the people. Jesus (Jonathan Roumie) perfectly plays Jesus with indignant anger we love to see when the calls them out. The apostles are just beginning to see the stakes involved. The other political power play within the ranks of the Romans intersects and it all explodes with the unexpected death of an innocent beloved character. The writers masterfully intertwine the storylines as the viewer follows each of the players breathlessly through the chaotic crowd at the end until everything stops and the audience gasps. It seems that the apostles only now are starting to understand the cost of following the Son of God.
Ahsoka (2023)
This feels like Star Wars!
This show feels much more like Star Wars than what. We have been seeing. The sets remind me of the original trilogy. Rebels fans will be more easily engaged, as this feels more like a continuance of the Star Wars Rebels show. These first two episodes bring the audience into the plot, but also contain some good light saber fighting. I am sorry that Ray Stevenson passed away. Because he was a strong character. Overall this is a solid start. Hope we get some more male characters in future episodes. Rebels without the male characters is not as interesting. Overall this has a lot of potential and shows promise. After being so disappointed with Star Wars content lately, I'm cautiously optimistic that we are back on track.
Sound of Freedom (2023)
Don't be afraid to see this.
I was worried there might be things in this movie that would cause trauma. There are no explicit scenes. That being said, this is an important movie and every parent should see it. Not only that, I would recommend it for teens as well. The acting, the script and the whole presentation is first rate. I think about this story, and it is true, and it cuts deep. It also keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Sometimes movies with a message can be either over the top or boring. This was neither. You could hear a pin drop in the theater through most of the film. I hope you will give this movie a chance. You won't regret it and it may open your awareness in a way that could save a child's life (Maybe even your own).
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
Darker story, but the characters we love are really celebrated.
James Gunn is a great story teller and his movie has so much heart. So this may be the best Marvel Movie since Spider-Man No Way Home. That being said, this may be tough on your 8 year old because there is an extremely abusive villain. On the other hand, the bad guy gets his due at the end, from the whole classic guardian team lead by Rocket. The acting is really good and the characters are respected and give a satisfying ending to their story. (But I think some will be back) Lots of teary moments, still good one-liners. I did not like the way Gamora was written in this movie. Otherwise, I loved all the other guardians, and loved Rocket the most. I recommend the movie, it
Leaves you thinking, in a good way.
Star Trek: Picard: The Last Generation (2023)
Great ending to a great season!
Exciting, suspenseful, fast paced, well written in story and dialogue. Great special effects for a series. I was so worried it was going to be an end and now I am now so excited about the future. The sexy new Enterprise and her charismatic crew 7 of 9 at the helm, Raffi as Number One and Jack Crusher (Picard) and Sydney LaForge on the bridge. This is diversity done right! Strong and interesting characters to bring us into the next season or series. Ed Speleers reminds me if a young Captain Kirk (Shatner or Pine take your pick. Congratulations to the show runners. Looking forward to the next mission. Take us out, engage, execute, punch it , let's just do it. Go....
The Mandalorian: Chapter 24: The Return (2023)
Good Recovery. After a wobbly start they stuck the landing.
Episode 7 and 8 brought us back to the quality we are used to for this series. This is the story of how all the Mandalorians came back together to take back their culture and their home. It had great pacing, lots of action. Din Jaren was back to his awesome fighting prowess, like he was in the first two seasons. I was expecting the Armorer to be a traitor spy, but she stayed true as did Axe. I really enjoyed this ending that the good guys banded together and defeated the bad guys. Grogu and Din killed Gideon's clones. The Mando, Bo Katan and Grogu fight with Moff Gideon had some great special effects. Grogu is getting more powerful and helped save his dad and Bo from the explosion that destroyed Moff Gideon's base. Mando finishes his journey: helps restore Mandalore, redeemed his identity, kills Moff Gideon and adopts a son. He also brings IG11 back with personality intact to be the new sheriff in Nevarro. I did not want Grogu to stay in IG12, it was creepy. But it will make a great toy when it comes out: IG12 with Grogu included. This could possibly be a happy ending to the series if they decided to call the next show something else like "Rangers of the New Republic" instead of Mandalorian season 4. Then we could get Gina back too. This is a good watch. Enjoy!
Star Trek: Picard (2020)
They got it right in Season 3!
First the fan girl part of me has to gush with the reunion of TNG. I stopped watching Picard in the middle of season 2 because I just lost interest. Then I heard that season 3 was amazing. So I watched, expecting to be underwhelmed. On the contrary, this was not just an opportunity to bring back old favorites. It was an exciting plot with great acting. Using some of the best characters, Raffi, and 7 of 9, introduced in seasons one and two and some great new additions like Jack Crusher, Sidney La Forge, Captain Shaw Just to name a few. The acting was amazing. The chemistry of the old TNG cast is back. Ed Steelers is a stand out as Picard's son. And all this talent was given an outstanding script and amazing great sets, music and special effects. Wow what a pleasant surprise! I was all in by the end of the second episode of season 3. I think they hit it out of the park!
On a Wing and a Prayer (2023)
I love this movie. Makes you feel good about people.
Well I know nothing about flying an airplane. I was, however, totally swept up in the drama. I understand this was based on a true story. It's all about a family flying in a small plane when the pilot has a heart attack and dies. The father has only one experience flying a plane previously and it was a much smaller plane. All these people in two air traffic control towers band together to help them. Then there is a flight instructor who is contacted by one of the air traffic controllers who really is the one who guided the father to land the plane. Dennis Quaid was really believable here. As was Jesse Metcaff who played the flight instructor. I also loved the various characters trying to help the family. With things so bad these days it was wonderful to watch a movie where there are no good guys or bad guys, there are just a lot of people trying to help a family in trouble. We really need more movies like this one where you feel really good at the end. It felt like we all won and God got to be the real hero bringing the plane down safely.
65 (2023)
Good Acting / scary Dino's too
I was not sure what to expect, but Adam Driver never disappoints. The young actress really did a great job too. There's lots to like about this movie. I'm surprised the marketing was so weak, I really did not hear a lot about it before it's release. The relationship between the two survivors is very sweet. It's a sci-fi / space/ prehistoric adventure. Jurassic Park meets White House down. There were sometimes when I wondered why Adam Driver still had his gun and back pack. It's fast moving and keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. I thought the dinosaurs were really good as well. I think it was worth the watch. And it is a good ending, I was cheering when they finally took off.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 22: Guns for Hire (2023)
What happened? Who sabotaged this show.
I am so disappointed. I was waiting for the "slime party" to be a front. And why in the world would they leave Grogu with the Lizzo character? He could so easily have been kidnapped by Gideon. The whole story has been to protect Grogu. Suddenly he is just left with strangers. Mando seems to be just a prop. It has all gone down hill since Gina Carrano was fired. I'm only holding out for the last two episodes because I'm such a fan of Jon Favereau. I wonder how much of the original season had to be scrapped and re-written because the pulled out Gina's character. It really felt flat, like a run through. The actors had no heart. I wonder if they took the original first episode and plugged it into Boba Fett at the last minute. The whole season would have been kicked off in a more positive direction. I am not usually so negative in my reviews, but I am so bewildered at this point.
Jesus Revolution (2023)
Great Movie
Nostalgic and relevant! Love the way the people are portrayed. This is not just good Christian filmmaking it's just good filmmaking. The people are flawed, real and multi dimensional. The story is well worth watching. And it is a true story. Times were so similar to today. The Holy Spirit is thriving. Even if you are not a Christian, you'll like the film. Young people will be able to see what their grandparents were like. As in the movie, we can still learn from each other and we all need acceptance and love. It's better than the competition this weekend (Cocaine Bear. Really?) Give it a shot you won't be disappointed.
Andor: Aldhani (2022)
It's getting better!
The first three episodes were setting things up but the acting was really good. This episode pulls it together and Andor becomes more engaging. Game of Thrones fans will recognize The Waif and the Mountain's Frankenstein creator.,Qyburn. I don't think you have to be a Star Wars Fan to appreciate this show. The whole production looks more like a movie than a TV series. It might be good to watch Rogue One again to recall why we came to love Andor in the first place. I think this series is capturing the fragmented universe the was left when the Jedi and the Republic were all but wiped out. It sets up why A New Hope was needed. I hope the old Star Wars fans will stay with it until the more recognizable pieces of the puzzle become evident. I love Luke Skywalker too but without the rebels there would be no stolen plans for Darth Vader to be chasing.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part V (2022)
Great Episode! I knew there was good in this series.
So glad I did not give up on it. Got our flashbacks. Got some great light saber action. Got some explanations. Most of all got some classic Star Wars - the fight of dark vs light.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
What a treat - better than the first one!
I fully expected a mind-blowing epic exciting action picture. What was a wonderful surprise was the outstanding acting. Tom Cruise has never been better, hope he gets a best actor nod. Miles Teller is one of the great new actors of our time and does not disappoint now. The script is really good, character, story and dialogue. And what a heart breaking scene with Val Kilmer and what a perfect way to use his acting gift by embracing his health condition and integrating it in a realistic and creative way.
Don't miss this one- see it in the theater. You are in for a treat. I hope they nominate it for best picture.
Ozark: A Hard Way to Go (2022)
They killed the wrong people-could have ended so much better
This was a great show but the last few episodes left me disappointed. Something was wrong with the pacing. Also I saw the twist with Navarro's sister from the beginning. Not realistic that they were so late to catch on. Also Wendy's motivations and actions made no sense. Ruth should have survived. I wanted Wendy and Camilla to get their due. Wendy's dad's character did not make sense. Again the motivation was unrealistic. The kids started out interesting but at the end they seemed inconsistent and empty characters. The dialogue was not very good.
The Book of Boba Fett: Chapter 7: In the Name of Honor (2022)
Mixed Bag...some great moments...but not as iconic as expected.
The last two episodes were so good that the finale. Was not the same caliber. The big battles were good with Mandi and Boba Fett facing the Pikes with the jet packs. It just seemed a little disjointed overall. Cad Bane was good but the fight could have been better. Loved Boba riding the beast, but the beast was too easily scared off by Cad Bane. It did not make sense. Grogu is always great, but again the connection between him and Mando during the big fight was not so clear. Was Grogu helping him use the dark saber with the force. I think the episode was rushed. I was expecting some cameos or a more exciting end credit scene to set up what is next. Perhaps if the expectations were not so high going into the episode, then the episode would have not felt like a let down.
The Book of Boba Fett: Chapter 6: From the Desert Comes a Stranger (2022)
Bravo Filoni! We needed this! Don't miss it!
Love the way this episode gives enough, but not too much. It's beautiful and brings back so many good feelings and reminders of Luke and Ashoka's journeys, training and development. Yet it does bring the story forward. The Book of Boba Fett is really just a chapter in the Mandoverse. Seems like Grogu is really the little one who will be able to wield the force and the Black saber. This kind of story is what Star Wars is all about. This is really something we need in these times when things are so dark.
Daredevil (2015)
Fantastic series...Don't miss this one.
The writing and acting in this show are first rate. I think this is the best Marvel series on any streaming service. I love the search for Mat's identity as he strives for moral integrity. Charlie Cox is compelling, as the orphaned blind boy who grows up to fight for his city with heart. He is portrayed all at once as sexy, powerful, vulnerable, kind and violent, but restrained. . (Sorry Ben Affleck I'm not a fan of the movie) Kingpin is played to.to perfection by Vincent D'Onofrio. The whole ensemble is first rate. The fight scenes are well choreographed and realistic. The production design and direction engages the audience with a skillful presentation of a story that is well constructed and irresistible. Love the way the back stories are told with precise timing to move the narrative. So glad we will see the Daredevil characters played by the same actors in the Marvel Cunematic Universe,
Red Notice (2021)
What a disappointment!
How could this movie with my favorite stars be so bad? No chemistry, No heart. For good Ryan Reynolds see Dead Poole or Free Guy, For good Gal Gadot see Wonder Woman or the Snyder cut of Justice League. For the Rock see Jumanji.
Love Hard (2021)
Better than most Christmas offerings
I was looking for an uplifting holiday movie and I found it. This is a funny and sweet look at on-line dating with a happy ending. There were many laugh out loud moments and the characters were like able.
City Island (2009)
Good Movie
This movie is an interesting look at a dysfunctional family with a lot of heart. It is funny and touching. The characters are well drawn and the performances are great.
Spencer (2021)
Hard to watch on many levels
This movie was so slow. There were many scenes that I think were supposed to be deep, but to me they came across like a bad photo shoot. I did not buy the portrait of bulimia. It seemed like the filmmakers did not like Diana and presented her as pathetic. It also seemed unlikely that she behaved the way she did in front of her children. At any rate I did not find this as entertaining or intellectually stimulating. The only reason I did not turn it off was because I paid almost $20 for the screening.
Free Guy (2021)
Surprisingly delightful!
This was so fresh and so much fun. This is the kind of fun movie that we all really need right now. The writing and acting are great and the special effects amazing. If you want to watch a movie that will leave you feeling good, this is your flick.
