I didn't know I was watching a sequel so, I'll admit, it's super disappointing to see so many negative reviews comparing this to the first film. At the same time, I feel a sense of superiority at having watched this film without any preconceptions. Because of this, apparently, I was able to thoroughly enjoy the wit, sarcasm, and overthetop action without reservation.
It's a hoot! From Banderos as a Greek tycoon with a Spanish accent to Freeman as the reluctant stepdad of the unlicensed hitman this film is rife with hysterical puns and unbridled schlapschtic. Hyack is always great in comedic roles and she leaves it all on the floor here as the traditional Latina spitfire with a penchant for killing. Jackson sells the role well despite somewhat of a lack of onscreen charisma with his overbearing wife. But what it lacks in connectivity it makes up for with Get Smart style action and chaos.
The film made the most of its stellar cast and I enjoyed the clever soundtrack.

I'm not sure why people are comparing this to Robocop. Maybe in 2014 there were very limited roles to compare it to, although the Data/Jordy buddy duo began in 1997; while not action stars, Data was comparable to Andy in intelligence gathering, strength and the poker faced comebacks that came across a comedic despite their somber truth. As I write this review in 2025, we now have a few others to compare it to, not the least of which is Outside the Wire (2021; Anthony Mackie).
While the initial impression in the opening scenes is cheap, B-level time waster, allowing the film a chance to pull you in gives a real payoff to intellectual sci-fi fans and should appeal greatly to the African American audience. Android Cop not only has role reversal with predominance of black and minority actors but exhibits an undeniable dose of prejudice, although toward the new breed of android cops who are white. The film uses it as part of the generous humor found here. It further points fingers at those who judge while, unbeknownst to them, actually being a part of the hated group.
The premise of a human mind inserted into an android or non human receptacle also differentiates this film from Robo Cop although also not completely novel in 2025 but still a profound and intriguing concept. Having the human host still alive lying dormant is fairly new in 2014 although a similar premise was seen in Avatar (2009).
The staging and costumes were not very inventive with a lot of Mad Max feel and there were no visible upgrades to the 2045 police uniform.
But this film is not to be dismissed as a ripoff or waste of time. I had a blast and some of the humor literally sent me.
Profound ideas, buddy humor, reverse sarcasm, good action.

Anytime you have an action star who is no longer a young hot action hero, you're going to have a lot of low star reviews from people who recently saw Rocky and are comparing it inappropriately. This film does a decent job of imagining a bank robber gets amnesia, which is a little bit of a new twist on an old theme. I personally thought the acting was a little over the top from the character who was given the truth serum, which becomes very grating to watch. But other than that, there's some decent plot and good action here, although all of them are bad aims - except Stallone, of course. The ending is a little odd; we don't really know why Stallone's character decides to do what he does. There's no real relationship between him and the bank robber. We have no idea how he's going to pull it off.
I was a Stallone fan for many years, at least the movies - I don't know about him as a person, which I did not hear great things about. But as an actor he was always someone you could count on with films like Rambo 2, Rocky, Cliffhanger. This genre of cop type stuff isn't new for him but it was more of the less famous films although still very good.
Even though Stallone and I are similar ages, I do have to remark that he looks strange, like he's had too much plastic surgery and his hair is pasted down too intensely. It seems as if he can't move his neck very well and it appears to be always jutting forward. I would say he looks great for his age but having seen him in younger years, there's just something so plastic about his looks now. But I commend him for continuing his art and lending his name to lesser known films so other people can enjoy them. Once a star has aged, they probably aren't as hard on the budget. 😊
