This movie was original. I can't even classify it. It simply tells a unique story. A shocking, bizarre, story about a concept that has existed in unfortunate abundance, but it's uniquely different. Saying that last sentence in a clearer way would give too much away, so I said it in a cryptic, convoluted way in the hopes anyone reading this will go into the movie as blind as possible. As everything unfolded I felt like I was having the same experience as the characters. The acting was phenomenal. Nothing looked cheap or janky. The pace was perfect. The story and characters are intriguing and curious. The music existed harmoniously with the rest of the movie instead of taking it over. This movie was an exquisitely crafted dish. No notes. The underlying message is simple, so this isn't any kind of mind-bender, yet I'll be thinking about this probably forever.
I kept waiting for the spooky to happen. Malcolm McDowell being in it, even as just a voice actor, had me kind of excited and hopeful. Unfortunately, it was a mess of unnatural dialogue, slow pacing, and an inexplicable plot. It was well shot, and the acting was fine given the terrible script. But that's the only reason it got two stars. The movie kept building up to build up the buildup, and in the last like, 5 minutes, everything pops off kind of, but doesn't really make any sense. Next thing you know... SPLAT! POOF! It's over. No explanation. Nothing in the buildup to extrapolate an explanation. Just a nothing burger.
I wasn't prepared for that! I expected gritty, but this was beyond! It's a wonderful horror take on Cinderella. The practical effects were a little wonky. The writing was a little messy. The CGI was decent. The acting was really good. The cinematography was on point. The music was perfect. It was a top notch B movie horror. Almost an A. I loved it! It seemed like this movie ended up being better quality than it ought to have been. I loved the original take on a story that's been done to death. Very gratifying. Very fun. I recommend it. I hope to see more fairy tales gone insane like this one!!
