Sodom (2017)
I thought I was going to be bored...
This movie was a pleasant surprise. It was a little weird at first but then things started falling into place. Places chosen for filming, acting, dialogue, chemistry. It was all there and just a cast of 2. If I would critique anything and it's not only in this movie but with a lot of foreign films, it's the constant smoking BUT that's just a personal preference I guess.
Metamorphosis (2007)
A big budget film it was not
I've seen films shot using phome cameras that are better than this. This was just a BAD movie. The acting was terrible. What was Christopher Lambert thinking. Not that he's a critically accalaimed actor or anything. The writing was terrible. Scenes were stitched together with some not making any sense in sequence of events. I love vampire movies and some of them are pretty cheesy but entertaining at least. Not this film.
Doom: Annihilation (2019)
As much of a fan I am...
This movie paled in comparison to the original and I'm aware that the original was also panned. This was a huge disappointment. I can't think of not one redeeming quality. The acting was bad (1 star) and the graphics were a bit better than the acting but not by much (1 star). The storyline tried to mimic the first but failed because of the previous reasons noted. So sad :0(...
Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
Finallly, monster action I can get behind but what was up with the storyline?!
I waited with bated breath for this release and I got what I was hoping for as far as monster action. Yeah, I could've used a little more but then again I'm never satisfied. The monster action was awesome! Now let's talk about the storyline. So many unnecessary characters and plot twists. Who the hell cares about the girl and what was she even doing in the movie?! Didn't they learn anything from Jurassic Park III and Jeff Goldblum's "daughter"?! Totally unnecessary and takes away from the monster action. I'd write more but then I'd be spoiling it for others. I'd give it 8 stars but I'm too much of a fan :0)
Diet of Sex (2014)
Porn on the Food Network
I have no idea why this movie was ever made but between the inconsequential characters, poor dialogue and main characters' chemistry I can't decide which is worse. It got 1 star for at least communicating that food, not just phallic shaped vegetables, can be conducive to good sex. Other than that it was awful! Yeah whoever gave this a 9 must've been watching something else. Oil and water have more chemistry. Actually I have seen lower budget pizza delivery man type porn movies with greater character development.
Those People (2015)
Love Adapts
Ahhhh the wonders of love, betrayal and everything in between. I believe this movie captures all that, maybe superficially at times, but it's there. Obviously the subject matter is similar to that of other movies as originality is hard to find. I mean lets face it, what hasn't been written and/or sung already?!
This movie touches on a subject that most of us experience and that's love. How love hurts, pining for someone that you've known for sometime but your love/admiration for that person isn't reciprocal, so you think. The characters in the movie to me were very believable. This movie was about those bonds that you form with your clique and how love adapts and how acceptance of its adaptation plays out. It didn't need to be this over the top gay extravaganza like other movies. The actors were very good and I'm glad that they didn't throw in all the unnecessary extras (i.e. the bigger than life drag queen, the club scene where most have their shirts off dancing to club music, etc). I believe the script was well written and stayed on focus. Definitely very touching, soft and dark at the same time. It's a movie that no matter what your sexual orientation is, you can relate to.
Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments (2016)
While I'm a fan of Sci-Fi....
I remember watching the original movie years ago which I did not review because my mom always told me that if I had nothing nice to say, then don't say it at all but....
I'm a huge fan of sci-fi (an avid follower of Godzilla) but sometimes you have to draw the line. I haven't had the pleasure of reading the books but from what I've heard of those that have, this series has surprisingly too few similarities. That written even if it had followed the book verbatim, this still would've been mediocre at best. The acting is fair to bad. The main characters Clary and Jace must've been related to the casting director, producer or something. Katherine McNamara is no more convincing as a bada*s than Kermit is at being an actual frog. So many series revolve around rebellious teenagers or young adults that it's just about overplayed. Taking into account the storyline, she still isn't convincing as a grieving daughter gone rogue to get her mother back and don't get me started on Dominic Sherwood. He must've taken lessons from the William Shatner Star Trek School of Overacting. His deliveries are almost monotone and as if being read off cue cards. He's always walking around as if trying to win a marathon with a stick up his bum and poor Clary, in heels (in the forest, on the streets and in the shower...jk), is always having to try to catch up to him. That might be on purpose though to show how the hairstylist made her so bouncy. Of course there is more over/under acting but I'm only allowed 1,000 words. The gay character is so cliché too. No imagination whatsoever.
Again, I'm a fan of sci-fi and I've seen this series thru ep.11 but not sure if I'll watch much of season 2 if this doesn't get cleaned up.
Burning Blue (2013)
Top Gun Adjacent :)
This movie reminds me somewhat of Top Gun. Wanting to the best at flight, relying on your mates and trying to hide faults / deficiencies.
This movie was beautifully shot considering locations / sets. With the blessing of the USN it tackled a subject which is til this day still a source of anguish for many current and former service persons in all branches of our military and life in general. The development of the character relationships was just OK in that you get the connection but it was lacking a certain dynamic. The struggles of the main characters against the discriminatory system in the US Armed Forces, their families, friends and themselves is evident and well acted but again, something in the writing / development was lacking. Thankfully there wasn't many of the typical gay clichés in this movie.
On a completely selfish note, while many the gay themed movie has gratuitous nudity and one sex scene after another. I'm kind of disappointed at the one "nude" scene there was. Not what I would've wanted or expected considering the main characters and theme. Again, completely selfish observation on my part though...I'm allowed :)
Between Something & Nothing (2008)
Lack of character development
I rarely write reviews but had to add my 2 cents. This movie lacks character development. There is so much going on but it's hard to sympathize or empathize because you don't get an idea of who the characters are. It's hard to relate. Just seem to be dropped in situations and it's like "How'd they get there? Who are they? What are they doing? What's the point?" Even the interaction between the characters is hard to follow. The acting was OK considering it wasn't a major production so I'm sure direction was lacking. Would I watch this again or recommend it...probably not. Although I have seen far worse in my day for sure. For the 1 hour 45 minutes it lasted I'm sure a lot more could've been done.
