World Trade Center (2006)
A travesty
There is no doubt some great technical work in the film, but that is where the genius stops, and the Hollywood begins. This film doesn't try and tell an original story, but rather tries to recreate the horrible insecure feeling of doubt and horror we all felt during 9/11 and then the unity we all felt thereafter...and fails horribly. Not only does it fail to focus on the main events during the characters real story, but it creates the most annoying and offensive character to ever grace a screen in the generic Christian Marine who comes and saves the day. Stone looses his ability to tell a controversial story effectively and thus creates a film that seems inspired by the writers at hallmark, and not the pride and courage created out of everyday men like the two in this film.
Carnosaur 3: Primal Species (1996)
...Wow...
This is one of the funniest movies i've ever seen. I rented it as a joke, expecting to get a giggle out of the first few scenes, and let me just say I've never laughed so hard in my life. The first scene where ninjas randomly pop out of the air and start a huge and ridiculous fire fight is one of the most incredibly funny stupid action movie moments of my life. This is not a dinosaur movie, but more a movie that makes fun (and doesn't mean to at all) of the action genre. I didn't see the first two, but judging by the complexity of the plot, I don't think there's to much I missed. If you wanna see a movie that goes great with a six pack or any herbal remedy, than I insist you rent this movie and sit back and watch a 100 years of advancement in cinema get thrown in the trash and get shat on by carnosours
The Crow (1994)
Powerful and Gripping
While this movie is definitely far from perfect, It is a perfect neo-Gothic dark superhero film, with absolutely incredible editing and some fantastic art design. While every sequel and Crow movie since this has destroyed the credibility of this film, it truly is possibly the greatest Gothic superhero movie of all time (with exception to Batman). Some of the scenes in this film are just so well done I still feel shivers when I watch them. For example The scene when Brandon Lee finally comes back to his now abandon apartment and relives his death is one of the most powerful and well edited scenes from 90's films. That is not even considering that it is also the scene in which Mr. Lee met his real life end as well.
Once Were Warriors (1994)
A Technically sound masterpiece
This film, despite how outdated the film will become and whatever arguments one can come up with against this film, no one can deny the fact that both the films editing and cinematography are considered some of the best done in the last 20 years. Michael Horton's editing is some of the most well known in the film industry and he shows possibly some of his best work in this film. The film, from the first shot to the last are all incredibly well done and i'm surprised it hasn't received more recognition that it has already. The urban style of this film reminds me quite a bit of Mathieu Kassovitz's french film La Haine (Hate). Despite the almost postmodern/neo feel to this film, both films have similar shots and editing feels, and try as hard as possible to accentuate the urban feel of the films, as real or fake as they may be. This film has a few problems with it, but anyone who wants to see easily the best film to come out of New Zealand/Australia region since Mad Max, you need to see this film. On a side note, both parents of the family, Rena Owen and Temuera Morrison worked together again in Star Wars: Attack of The Clones.
The Birth of a Nation (1915)
The first of many...
Despite what people think of this movie being racist, disgusting, perverted and all the other things that this movie might indeed be. It non the less will anchor itself in history as it almost single handedly change the way film are made and the way films are looked at. Before Birth of a Nation, there was no thing as a massive hit movie. Because of this massive success at the box office, movie studios in Hollywood for the first time realized that instead of spending a few thousand dollars on a bunch of films, they could spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on one film and promise a successful smash hit at the box office. This was one of the greatest demises of independent film. While the Trust of the early 1900's tried to destroy independent film making, this film was definitely one of the reasons independent films and low budget films are not even close to sharing the same limelight as the big super hits in Hollywood today.
Crash (2004)
Excellent Movie, one of the best of '05
Crash is a movie that almost anyone can enjoy because it delves into characters and brings the spectator an incredibly beautiful visual experience with incredible camera work by James Muro and superb story telling by Paul Haggis. While Haggis did once create Walker Texas Ranger, something that can never be forgiven, he did also create Million Dollar Baby, so that tells you something about his scale. The most amazing and interesting thing about this movie, is that it takes the actors and puts them in roles many people wouldn't expect them to have the ability to perform well in. Matt Dillon easily presents his greatest performance on film and Don Cheadle does a great job in not only acting but bringing the film to the screen the right way. The most surprising role in the film is the work of Michael Pena who delivers a very powerful and believable performance. The one thing that almost kills this movie however is the constant banter from Chris 'Ludicrous' Bridges mouth. The constant racist jokes from most actors and paranoid conspiracy theories spilled out of Ludicrous' mouth are enough to take the spectator out of the movie entirely. Many of the jokes are in fact hilarious, but they often go way to far as to have to tell them once every 3-5 scenes, turning the film into saturated crap in some parts. However take a great job from both crew and cast and a very well written screen play, and add Mark Isham's incredible score and you have a Class A film.
