With a frustratingly atrocious and nonsensical plot, dreadful production values, horribly dark cinematography, Cusack's annoyingly weird acting performance playing an annoyingly weird character, this is a truly horrifically terrible experience which you can only get through by separate viewings and/or incessant pressing of the fast forward button. Even the presence of Samuel L. Jackson, playing the only sensible character in the entire cast, does not salvage this film from being much more stupid than it is scary. The pacing is petrifyingly slow and indeed watching it through to the end was utterly regrettable.
Drags slowly through the muck of the character's flaws, taxing the viewers patience watching the main character drink alcohol and pop codeine pills in between giving himself mri scans, while the co-character struggles with an irritatingly annoying and intractable wife. Oh so gradually the premise develops as Mackey starts popping time-travel pills which affect his pineal gland as it has been somehow preserved from aging by a tumor. Well done enough to suspend disbelief but the strange somberness of the film's atmosphere created by the directors calls for fandom dedication to their work. If you're just looking for entertainment you may be more than a bit frustrated.
Westworld knockoff with a Sin City sleaze. Not enough budget or high enough rating to succeed at either genre. If not for all the gratuitously bawdry burlesquity presented throughout, the film would be insufferable in its entirety. The plot is melodramatically corny and takes itself too seriously. The acting is wooden. The characters are annoying. The gunplay is absurdly overwrought. The ridiculous story drags on and on with too many long takes of the lead airhead bimbo emoting like a deer in the headlights. The fast forward button is you friend if you commit all the way through to the horrible ending.
