The Substance (2024)
I feel so disturbed I'm not sure what to do
So I just finished watching this. I'm kinda numb. I mean I just don't know what to think anymore. I'm not sure what is real and what is delusional. Ok maybe not to that extreme but this movie went to a place that I only imagined to exist. I've been watching horror movies for over 50 years and in all that time I don't think I've ever witnessed anything so disturbing as The Substance. Let's start with a life lesson. You may not be happy with yourself, your life, etc. That is a far cry from where you could wind up though. There's nothing wrong with self improvement, but sometimes the price exceeds the reward. And that is where this movie has gone. I always thought that The Fly (the remake with Jeff Goldblum) went to lengths to gross out the viewer. That movie was a stroll in the park compared to this. Re-animator and From Beyond tried to do it as well, and they were good for their time. But this movie.... I don't have the words to describe the experience. I have a tendency to nod off while watching movies... but this one kept me awake and focused. Even The Human Centipede didn't reach the heights of gross out horror as this. I wish I could share the experience with someone but I don't know anyone who would want to watch it with me. Would you?
Body Swap (2019)
Modern Family?
I felt like I was watching that TV show. The weird thing is, I actually liked this movie. The two stars actually did a good job portraying the opposite sex.
Cell (2016)
It could've been a contender
If only they had the heart, the drive, and the will to make it..... I watch the movie every once in a while... not because I liked it, but because I have trouble remembering it. I remember the beginning.... up till they leave the subway station through the access manhole. From then on my memory gets a little fuzzy... and I wonder if it's the movie or me....
The Event (2010)
It's so damned annoying
Everytime I find a show that keeps me interested, it's cancelled. What gives? The Event has action, intrigue, conspiracies, and now it's gone. And we'll never learn what The Event actually was. Boo!
Supernatural: Lebanon (2019)
Super emotional episode
Excellent touching episode. And I loved how the final music track was the same as the final episode of season 5.
Dollhouse (2009)
Another Eliza show shot down before its time
This show had promise. Given the chance (and I mean more than two short seasons) it could have gone somewhere. But, alas, we the people, in our infinite wisdom, have once again made the determination that shows with plot, character and a little mystery, need to be pushed aside for the likes of... Well, talk to FOX executives... they KNOW which ones they kept around... based on numbers... numbers which WE cause. What is it with the American viewing public these days (more like this last 2 decades)? There should be a channel for shows which, though they didn't have the numbers, had a loyal fan base. Hell, public broadcast cable, like the old Channel J in NYC... I know it's unrealistic - it cost money to make these shows, and the money comes from the advertisers who PAY to have their products placed and SEEN by people, who, if the numbers aren't there, then obviously not enough people are watching! But, there's gotta be another answer. To leave us with reality shows, all over the place... it's like, I'll stick with watching TV on the internet where I can pick and find what I like, not what THEY think I like. Damn. OK, this is what you get when you stay up 24+ hours and are expected to be coherent. Well, a rant is a rant.
Eliza! I will stand behind your work! I love it and they way you do it! (ok, maybe a little too much emotion with the last statement. so shoot me).
Tru Calling (2003)
I've seen worse
The show's not rocket science. It's got a simple, one issue/plot per episode. The cast is decent - again - not the worst group of actors (m/f) I've ever watched. It was a good way to spend an hour (or more if it's DVR'ed). I feel bad for Eliza though - it seems that her luck with shows where she holds the lead credit is... well, it's like someone has it out for her. Maybe jealousy? Who knows. All I know is - and the comparison is apples to oranges, but shows like (DWTS - a non-SyFy channel) keep running season after season, whereas shows like this are relegated to live the life of reruns. I gotta blame the American viewers though (and yes, I am an American) - their overall taste in entertainment is really slipping. And it's shows like this that get the bullet. I know the bottom line is $$$, but seriously people - compare television of today with what it was back in the 60's, 70's, 80's. I hate to say it, but shows, and the talent behind them were at a higher caliber than what you've got today. How much effort does it take to stick some camera's in some trailer trashes double wide, and broadcast their antics to the country? Not much. Hell, most middle school kids could probably pull it off. The whole 'give the people what they want' mentality has got to change. People will watch almost anything... as evidenced by shows like ... ... well, I'm not going to throw stones at anymore than I already have... And yes, I know I've demonstrated the tangent ability by this minor diatribe. So what? You get the message, right? I know YOU do.
