The King's Speech (2010)
boring film
I didn't get what the point of this film was...It wasn't entertaining and it was too slow. The story was annoying. Who cares about a king with a stutter? Why should we care? The conflict wasn't very clear. Overall I didn't enjoy this film. The acting was OK, the direction was good but the screenplay is a drag along with the story. The music was boring too and there was nothing fun about the film. I watched this in the theater because I was curious but I guess I made a mistake... Why Hollywood make some boring films (besides transformers, action/comedy films, spider man and wolverine!)...And all the boring films win awards when quality, entertaining films should win. "No country for old men", "Schindlers list", "The hurt locker( a stupid documentary)...
Biutiful (2010)
Bad film...what was the point?
Bordem should retire after doing this depressing film. Why was this film made is what I wonder? The story, the writing, direction, and acting was all pathetic. There was no point. What was the story? The music was decent and the cinematography was also quite nice. The problem with this film is that it doesn't entertain... Films are meant to entertain (action, comedy, romance, scifi, etc). This is just a depressing film that is too confusing. It is meant to be sad but it is so poorly made that I don't care about the characters. Why is the man helping illegal immigrants come into the country? If it's against the law, how can we sympathize with him? The whole "dying" angle seemed forced so we have another "reason" to sympathize with the character...Finally, how is this film nominated in the Oscars? I have always felt that the Oscar is fake but this is ridiculous. Why quality films never win awards? We watch films to get entertained, not for a lecture.
Utt Pataang (2011)
Not for Indians
This film is unique, interesting, has a different story and the acting is decent...It's not for the Indian audience and I found it to be boring...We want masala, entertainment, action, comedy, good songs, dancing...Who wants to pay for crap like this? It's a boring film meant for the so called "Intellecual" but people in India just want to have fun. Films Like Dabanng, Houseful, tees maar khan and YAMLA PAGALA DEEWANA! Those are quality films that work in India... Why is bollywood trying to be like Hollywood? We don't want anything with "depth" whatever that means...We just want ENTERTAINMENT. That's what we pay for...All these films, udaan, dhobi ghat, lsd...They are not for us...Bring back the old love stories and msala flms!
Yeh Saali Zindagi (2011)
bad movie
I pay money to have fun, not to think...Why would any Indian want to watch a film like this when we love singing, dancing, commercial masala films. This film is too confusing and not very fun to watch. Too many twists and turns. Only acting by Irfaan Khan is good and the acress is sexy, but that's it. What are these new so called "realistic" films coming out of bollywood these days? Udaan, Peepli Live, Dhobi Ghat, Love Sex Dokha...All these are so boooring. Yeh Saali Zindagi is another one that tries to be all Hollywood in style and story. Watch this film only if you are the so called "intellectual type" but most of the audience won't accept this film. It's a flop show. I and most of us bollywood fans enjoy Dabanng, Yamla Pagala Deewana and WANTED type films. Not these boring types.
127 Hours (2010)
horrible film...
Not entertaining...No action, fun, comedy...No good music and no famous star...Very boring film and for people who want to think while watching movie...No entertainment though. Reasons why i don't like this movie: Boring Bad acting bad direction bad cinematography No fun/action no comedy too depressing and serious. Films are meant to entertain, not document a life. They aren't supposed to educate or force us to think. We pay for entertainment...I am sad to have paid for this movie because i got nothing from it. It's a badly made film with bad story and screenplay. I found the story to be pointless...Why cares about a man who climbs? Who cares about conflict? I just wanna have fun like most people!
Raaz: The Mystery Continues (2009)
Could have been better, but entertained!
The cinematography was the best part of this film...The lighting and photography was brilliant! Also, some of the angles had a very frightening and mysterious feel to it. The direction and story was also unique.Yes, this was overall a well made film but it could have been so much more! A few unnecessary scenes slowed the pace down a bit. The director attempted some cliché gags to frighten the audience. Sometimes it gave me the "been there done that" feel. The acting in the film was OK. Emraan in my opinion, was the best. Adhyayan Suman and Kangana Ranaut were OK. One thing I don't understand is, what was the need of the random English dialogues? That made things a bit less believable. The film was also a bit melodramatic...But it was a good movie overall.
Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
good movie but Real India?
this movie was good...Great direction, acting, music and cinematography...but let me ask something..
Did it show real India? What is real India? This film was about the harsh life in the slums and about one kid who goes from rags to riches. When people see a film about the Indian slums they label it "Real India"...So is growing India, "second fastest growing economy" India the "Fake India"? That is also real isn't it? It's really happening Isn't it? So why is it that the dirty, smelly corrupt India is labeled the "real India"...
Don't get me wrong... It was a well made film, but also a bit one-sided with the whole "Real India" aspect. Especially that one scene when the kid is beaten near the taj mahal by the cops and these Americans come up to the kid...The Kid says "This is real India"...Then the Great American says, "This is REAL America" so she gives his $100. So basically the director is saying that real America is positive, beautiful and cultured while real India is disgusting, violent and poor...Is that one-sided or not? What I am saying is that every country has it's positives and negatives. This film successfully showed the dark side of the country but there was no point in adding "Real India" because that indicated the fact that India is ONLY the way it is depicted in the film. India has Rich and Poor and BOTH are part of the "Real India".
Kisna: The Warrior Poet (2005)
This movie isn't THAT bad...
When we have an Industry in India (bollywood) that produces a handful of useless commercial masala films every year(with only a few being entertaining), here comes something different...There are no actors going around dancing without a shirt on. No wet saree dance and no cliché bollywood junk...Yes, there is song and dance but the story actually has some meaning to it and you need brains to understand something like that. Yes, there are loose ends and plot-holes and that is why I wouldn't call this an EXCELLENT and FANTASTIC film. I respect the director for at least attempting to do something different rather than booking a flight to New Zealand and having a bunch of ladies dancing around in bikinis....Just look at the overall grandeur of this film...The cinematography, the music, the dance sequences, the sets and the theme..All these things are quite impressive..If you know anything about film-making then you would understand.Yes it gets a bit too much at the later portions of the film, but still...I wouldn't call this movie bad when compared to the other films that bollywood produces...
Sarkar Raj (2008)
good movie...but is it as good as Sarkar?
This was a good movie, no doubt...But I don't know if I would call it as great as Sarkar (The first part). Sarkar, the first film of the series, was awesome! Sarkar Raj is also a well made movie with a good story and great acting, however Sarkar definitely has a few more memorable scenes and dialogs than this film. Sarkar was also less predictable than this film. The audience may not agree with a few things in this film since the story seems to take a drastic turn. Also the last few scenes aren't as exciting when compared to the first movie. However, overall Sarkar Raj is a good sequel and the ending is decent (not great)...Looking forward to the 3rd film!
Race (2008)
alright..
This movie had good songs, nice camera work, and some cool steps....The suspense was cool, yet too many twists kinda ruined the show. Yes, it is an entertaining film, but some of the twists towards the end of the film seemed a bit strange and unrealistic. Also, the acting of everyone, besides Saif Ali khan, seemed mediocre. I have seen better Abbas-Mustan films...Baazigar (1992), Aitraaz, Ajnabee and Humraaz were definitely better. The action was also a bit unrealistic and not of international standards. The ending of this film, however, was quite interesting...Overall watch this film for some fun and a few thrills...Other then that nothing really to look forward too...
Dhokha (2007)
Good
a good film but not amazing...yes, it is different and thought-provoking like all mahesh Bhatt films. This film, however, could have been MUCH better. Everyone acted well, direction was great. Cinematography was also good, so where did it lack? The movie was too fast paced. The film should have been at least 2 hours and 30 minutes. It seemed rushed.Too much takes place in the first 30 minutes of the film.Too many questions are asked. Mahesh Bhatts previous film, awarapan, which was directed by Mohit Suri, was brilliant! This film, however, had the potential to be even better than Awarapan since Terrorism is something everyone can relate to. Awarapan was only for people who understand the true Muslim religion. Basically Dhokha is a good film but could have been better. Also, why is there use of many English words in this film? This is a Hindi film and should be totally in Hindi. When they speak English it sounds fake. The film gets a 7 because it is good and the subject is quite meaningful.
Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag (2007)
good movie
ill give it an 8 out of 7 because of guts...RGV has the guts to make a remake of a 1975 classic bollywood film...Whatever you do, do NOT compare this film with the original..While the story is the same, the setting and everything is completely different.Either way RGV knows what he is doing...The first part of the film was great, but the second part could have used some improvement in the when it comes to execution...I have always said that RGV is one of the best film makers in India alongside Mahesh Bhatt, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and Vishal Bharadwaj....From Shiva(1989), satya and company, to kaun, bhoot and sarker, RGV definitely knows what he is doing...There are many scenes in this film that stand out...Amitabhs intro (Babbans) was brilliantly executed...The acting could have also used some improvement...Amitabh and mohanlal were amazing but the rest of the cast was just OK...Ajay devgan was a miscast in my opinion..Instead Aamir Khan or even bobby deol would have been better. So basically, a decent flick (violent though), but it gets a 7 because of RGV's habit of taking a risk
Marigold (2007)
stereotypical Hollywood movie trying to make bollywood look bad...whats new?
wow...I just watched this movie...American people have this stereotypical view towards Hindi films such as, ALL Indian films have dances, songs and a love story....Its pathetic how far away from the truth that is. This film simply exposes the stereotypical western view of Hindi films. Horrible acting, horrible direction, horrible cinematography. And all this by a Hollywood director. Most Indian films today are much more content driven, realistic, touching and meaningful than this piece of crap. Indian cinema (not just Hindi) also cover a variety of different subjects. Just like most other Hollywood films these days, this shows a very stereotypical view of of another country, where truth is thrown out the window. This is a highly NOT recommended movie. Instead watch good Hindi films like black Friday, eklavya, omkara, khakee, awarapan, gangster, don, zakhm, dor, sholay, mother India, lagaan...Those films are what real Indian cinema are all about.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)
umm....
whats so great about this film that it continues to run in the movie theaters of India? Who continues to see this movie in the theater. More importantly, who goes to pay to watch this movie? Whats so amazing about the storyline...OK so a boy meets a girl...Raj and Simran meet in London. Simran must go back to India since her father is planning to get her married. raj goes to India to do whatever it takes to get the love of his life. OK, perhaps this was a good movie when it came out, and yes perhaps it is considered a classic, however times have changed. This movie is not close to international standards. It was entertaining the first time i watched it...Today it is nothing compared to black Friday, omkara, eklavya, and the many films bollywood releases.
Big Brother (2007)
oh god...
OK, if you are going to make an action flick please try and concentrate on the script. The action sequences are also something that makes one laugh out loud...Fake! The script is bogus with many plot holes. This film could have been OK if they concentrated on the script and had more realistic action sequences. Sunny Deol needs to start acting in some better movies. This and Teesri Ankh absolutely suck. When I was watching this movie(Big Brother) i wasn't really expecting much since the reviews were disappointing. I was just expecting an action film. This movie got boring very quickly. Their in nothing really original. One guy after all the goons and villains. The hero whooping ass left and right. You also have the politicians and the love sequence. From the first 20 minutes into the film, you already know what is going to happen. The dialogues are also really disappointing due to the lack of originality. Everything is just so fake. Even the acting is below average. Their is either a happy or an angry sunny deol...Nothing else. Priyanka Chopra hams as well as Farida Jalal. Everyone is horrible in this film. The direction, screenplay and story are all below average. BIG disappointment!
Omkara (2006)
Well made...VERY good
This film is VERY good....It is of international standards...But then it makes you wonder why isn't it popular among the non-Indian people. The acting in the film is amazing. The cinematography and direction is brilliant. This film is of International standards among films like Black Friday and Eklavya. Shakespeare would be proud if he was to see this Hindi adaptation of Othello. But the question is why do the Western people still think of Indian films as cheesy love stories. Why do films like kkkg, Kal Ho Na Ho and Bride and Prejudice become known among the western audience while films like these are ignored? Bollywood, start marketing better! Saif Ali Khan is brilliant Langda Tyagi (Iago)...he is a natural in this films. Ajay Devgan is Amazing as Omkara (Othello). Quality Indian films are being ignored while commercial films starring Amitabh and Shahrukh become hits. People need to realize it's not about the star cast but about the story. This films, Omkara, Black Friday, Eklavya, and Rang de Basanthi (Kind of) are good films. Even Small budget films like Dor and Khosla ka Ghosla are good! This film along with those deserve much more recognition among the Indian and Western American and British audience. People think of bollywood films as cheesy musicals( Don't get me wrong, thy are fun to watch..) but the stereotype needs to end and people need to know about the quality films that bollywood produces. Omkara is one such films!
Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani (2002)
wow....
OK, I would give this a 1, but I'm gonna give it a two because I laughed while watching this film...First of all, I can make a much better movie than this one...in a week...The special effects made this film look like a joke. One shouldn't make such films with horrible special effects because then people won't take it seriously. The acting and direction was also horrible. The screenplay had many plot holes and the whole film wasn't believable at all. This has to be the worst Indian film ever. The songs were also bad. The acting was bad and artificial. Need I say more. Don't watch this movie unless you are curious to see how bad it is. That's why I watched it. I am going into film and I wanted to see how bad a bad film can get. Trust me, I watched one of the worst films in history if not THE worst film.
Black Friday (2004)
Anurag Kashyap, please make more films!
I would give this film a 10 out of 10, but I don't think any film can be perfect. Anurag, you are a genius! This film is great. Not only is it a true story, but it has been shot in a very unique fashion...The flashbacks, etc make this film so unique. Also the red shots and the blue shots also give a feel of reality. The acting, cinematography, editing, and action was all top notch and made the film very realistic. This is not your everyday masala, popcorn flick but a very well made, thought provoking film. It's really sad that the Indian government can't handle reality. This film shouldn't have been banned. The public should know what happened in 1993. This was a very good movie but only for those who enjoy realistic films. This along with a few other bollywood films (Omkara, dor, rang de basanthi), goes against the stereotype that all bollywood films have a set formula of a boy meeting a girl and dancing and singing. It's sad and pathetic how films like these don't get popular internationally. Many foreigners think of Bollywood as escapist cinema with cheesy dance numbers. More films like black Friday need to release (And become popular) in order to destroy this generalization among foreigners.
Nishabd (2007)
good, but not great
I give this an 8 because of the unique concept and some touching and nicely executed scenes. However, the film could have been much better. Ram Gopal Vermas sarkar was great and compared to that, this film isn't that impressive. There are a few things I would change about this movie...One thing is that Jiah says "Take Lite" a bit too often and it gets repetitive. Also, I believe that Hindi films should be totally in Hindi without any random lines in English. This makes the movie a bit cheesy and fake. The characterization could have also been a bit better, although this film didn't really need any characterization besides Jiah and and Amitabh. This film should have also been a bit longer since the love seems to appear too quickly. 2 hours seems like a good length for this film. Other then that, it's a good, powerful film and worth watching if you enjoy watching unique films.
Water (2005)
fine movie
This movie was fine but i don't understand why every Indian movie which become popular outside of India has something to do with the miseries of India.Water is a good yet depressing film about widows and how they were treated in 1930's.A good film but depressing. Why cant a positive film about Indian culture receive accolades in international awards. This, fire and earth. Deepa Mehta loves negativity. Why didn't rang de basanthi get nominated for the Oscars? Because it is to positive and shows the current youth and India of the future. Why was the 1990's film city of joy made? Because it shows the dirty life in calcutta. It is good to make a film of the miseries of the past, but some positive films can also be made about India. Peoples views of India is becoming negative because of this. However, one cant ignore the fact that water is a well made film with good acting and direction.
