Yes, this movie is really good and I was quite keen to see it. The production is excellent and the screenplay fairly decent, but what elevates it from a 6/10 to a 7/10 is Kate Winslet's performance. She's just a great actress, and a good job too, because the supporting cast are average at best. The story is dark enough, as is any movie that deals with the horrors of war. We do get the occasional glimpse of Kate's breasts, and while I'm not complaining (she's a beautiful lady) I didn't feel any kind of nudity was necessary to keep the viewer interested in what was going on. I wasn't crazy about the ending, but overall I would happy to recommend this movie.
Southern gothic is defined as an artistic tradition that draws on gothic tropes, the undead, and the grotesque, where these dark images are used as conduits to explore the tensions that haunt the American South. This movie is all that, but just happens to have Hellboy in it. It's pretty spooky and a perfect movie for the season. As a long time fan of Mike Mignola's work, I enjoyed this very much, but it's not a "superhero" movie and many will be disappointed. The cast are fine, I thought they good a great job. The effects are just fine too, just remember you are not watching a big budget Marvel movie (some of which are less spectacular than this). I will definitely watch this again and consider it a decent adaptation of the source material (some scenes are exactly as they would be in the comic books).
